I've had some crying friends in Sydney bleating that if Murdoch and Foxtel could destroy the great international game of Rugby League at grassroots level what will happen to our poor local game called AFL. I tried to point out that Philip Island could qualify for the next RL world cup using the criteria they do and AFL will continue to thrive on any medium in Australia because of its great mass appeal in this country but they wouldnt have a bar of it. What do others think?

Nick, personally I can't agree with them. Mind you I am taking my opinion from the QLD perspective. The game has been steadily growing up here at all levels.
Foxtel is going to bring the game into more homes up here than currently have access to footy other than what has been shown on ch7.
When asked what I did on the weekend the answer for most of my life has been the same, but the responses to that answers have changed dramatically.
When I answered "watched the Aussie Rules" or something to that affect:
15 - 20 years ago I was met with a blank stare.
10 years ago (when I said 'watched the bears'), they said 'whose that?'
5 years ago they laughed cause by then they knew about the Bears.
Now they say 'hey the lions have done alright haven't they', 'so what is the Gabba like now they have finished all the work?', and then of course the 'I went to my first Aussie Rules game this year, it was great!'.
I personally can see no detrement in bringing the game into as many households as possible in a typically non-Aussie Rules state.

whoever get's the pay TV rights it doesn't effect me. Where I live it costs an arm and a leg to recieve it. I just have to watch the normal tele. If 9/10 get the rights I am lucky as Albany recieves WIN television but much of WA doesn't and so they would miss out on the footy. I think WIN will have to look into that.
Maybe a better test of the Murdoch influence would be how the English Premier League has been affected.
Perhaps some of our London correspondents such as Dipper or Dutchman or our local Premier League fans (Alf, Joffa) could comment.
