Week 4 of the first round of the inaugural Foxtel Cup competition gets under way this weekend, with 3 winners already through in Northern Territory Thunder, East Perth, and Williamstown. The winner of this
match will meet Williamstown in the next round. This match is one of several to feature the lower ranked SANFL teams than were originally invited, in this case West Adelaide.

This match represents the first time these two sides have met in competition. The NEAFL and SANFL seasons are both underway as we write. Ainslie coming off a loss to fellow NEAFL and Foxtel Cup compatriot,
Greater Western Sydney in their only match of the season, and West Adelaide on their second straight win of the season over Central Districts.

Given the form West Adelaide is in, as well as the match being in Adelaide, and the way Ainslie were walloped by Greater Western Sydney, I believe Wests are a shoe-in for this match.

2010 Form

Ainslie: Premiers, AFL Canberra
West Adelaide: 6th, 10-9

Introduction to the Teams

West Adelaide

West Adelaide was founded in 1891, and joined the SAFA (later the SANFL) in 1897. They currently play out of City Mazda Stadium (Richmond Oval). West Adelaide havent been the most successful club over the years. They were Australian champions in 1908 and 1911. West Adelaide are generally known as the Bloods or Westies.

Several famous AFL players have played for West Adelaide including Tony Modra, Shaun Rehn, Mark Ricciuto, Ken Eustace, Bernie Smith, Robert Day, Jack Broadstock, and Grantley Fielke.

Due to the sharing arrangement with Port Adelaide and Adelaide in the AFL, the club may have several AFL listed players on the field this weekend. West Adelaide has also recruited former Carlton forward Brad Fisher to line up for them.

Several famous AFL players have spent time at Ainslie including James Hird, Sean Smith and Nathan Buckley. Tigers and Collingwood great, David Clke, spent some time coaching Ainslie. There are currently no AFL players on the Ainslie list.

This is one of the games where an ugly one sided result could occur especially as West Adelaide are in form and Ainslie are not. Lets hope it is an entertaining affair.

Really, West Adelaide should win by 15 goals. What's going to make it worse is that the NEAFL sides don't have access to AFL listed players.

I really can't imagine Andy Collins will select the AFL listed players for this match.

Westies have the bye this week (Round 3)

From the SANFL website - Westies team list who demolished last year's SANFL Premiers by 11 goals in Round 2.

West Adelaide:
Aaron Fielke, Christopher Schmidt, Steven Morris, Ryan Ferguson (c) , Brad Fisher, Logan Hill, Adam Hartlett, Daniel Caire, Jarrod Silvester, Shane Birss, Kurt Thompson, Ryan Willits, Jonathon Beech, Michael Pettigrew, Daniel Webb. Natale Caruso, Ben Macreadie, David Piasente (vc), Benjamin Fisher, Fortunato Caruso, James Ezard

Nice preview mate and while I don't want to appear pedantic I think I should point out that Ken Eustice played in the SANFL, not the AFL. Ken played for Westies, was playing coach at Centrals and finished his career with Glenelg under Neil Kerley. Bernie Smith, Jack Broadstock and Robert Day all played in what was then, the VFL. I think Broadstock played for Richmond, Robert Day (younger brother of Ian Day) played for Hawthorn(from memory) and I think Bernie Smith was at Geelong (I think he may also have won a Brownlow).

well pettigrew is already out for us, and i see us resting a few key players like ezard, one of silvester/fergie and a few others. we still have some decent players that haven't played a league game in bricknell (who was talked up as almost bein drafted last year) and others who are capable of stepping up.

small question, but if we win, when was the last time the same team beat 2 premiers in 2 successive weeks?

oh and adam hartlett is out with a broken ankle/torn ankle ligaments or something of that.

For those of us old enought to remember, there used to be a Champions of Australia series played between the premiers of the SANFL,VFL and WAFL. North Adelaide won it in 1972, beating both East Perth(?) and Carlton. That may well be the last time it happened.

As expected. Ainslie are almost the weakest team in the comp, probably just in front of East Coast Eagles (who at least will have the luxury of playing at home).

Ainslie are better then ECE, only Tuggers in the ACT comp would possibly be below anyone in SFL.

As for the weakest, well they have already got more goals than Swan Districts last week

So wait, the #6 SA team has the highest score and highest winning margin so far in the comp?
Poor Victorian and WA teams. Can't get the same domination with their #1-#3 teams :p;)
