Hello everyone,

We feel it is necessary to explain the decision process behind the decision to discontinue sport. Please understand that this was a very difficult decision to make and a very hard pill to swallow for us. Due to Foxtel raising the monthly fees from $1650 per month to $2750 per month and only giving the hotel 20 hours notice of the price increase, combined the added strain on business due to the 3am lockout and the governments decision to monopolize Adelaide to drive business toward the casino, the decision was taken out of our hands. We have prided ourselves for years on providing a great atmosphere for English football and sports across the board and we will miss it just as much as all of you. Please direct any complaints to Foxtel and we will be doing the same, work with us to get the word out and show our anger for our favourite sports bar being ruined by Foxtel!!!

Pretty disgusting. For those who aren't aware the Rosemont ('Rosie') is the only true soccer pub in Adelaide and for foxtel to raise their prices that much is poor form on their part. A great place to watch soccer with a great atmosphere. Really disappointing.

Hopefully this gets rectified because the Skycity Casino is a pretty shit place to watch soccer.

It's a poor excuse.

There's been rumours of the owners taking the pub in a new direction for a while. This (foxtel price rise) seems to be a handy out.

Shame. Many a good time was had there.

hopefully opens up the market for someone else to do the same.
surely somewhere with minimal saturday and sunday night traffic could use this as an opporunity to take control of the market.
good news for the casino I suppose.

That's what I've heard too. Apparently Rod Rose (one of the owners) wants to turn it into a nightclub instead and pursue a younger crowd, but at the same time doesn't want to put his regulars offside so he's shifting the blame onto Foxtel.

Good. Lost respect for this place when a bunch of us Greeks showed up and treated us like 2nd class citizens when watching a Greece WC Qualifier. Sky City's Granstand bar is the place to be! They shouldn't be blaming FOXTEL just because they're too cheap to pay the extra thousand $$$.

Nothing. I know you'll probably roll you eyes when you read this, but a lot of people despise Greeks. I really wouldn't be surprised if that's the reason.
 
What's a beer go for in the joint? $9 and they'd only need to sell around 120 to pay the bill. Think the general football fan would drink more than 120 in a month on their own!

Thread bump. SBS is broadcasting every World Cup match aren't they? Last time I checked that was a free to air channel.

So my question is will the Rosemont still operating as a sportsbar without a Foxtel subscription? Is it doing so during the World Cup?

I haven't been past since hearing the news in the op, and don't know if they have taken the tele's down or anything, could someone perhaps fill me in?

No other place in Adelaide has the same kind of atmosphere as a packed Rosemont on the night/morning of a big football match. Would hate to watch the World Cup anywhere else

The Rosemont have got rid of foxtel at the worst possible time. Especially now with footy in the city, a lot of people would be looking to kick on at a sports bar after the game. I made the mistake of going to the Rosemont for a beer with a couple mates after the Port/Geelong game and it was as a dead as a door nail. Sitting at the bar while 3 tv screens are showing the telecast of the logies, give me a break. That was the same night Liverpool were playing Chelsea and plenty would have kicked on for that game.

Speaking to an ex manager at the Rosemont I hope this does not come across as a racist which is not my intention but he advised me they used to have a lot of issues with Asian students. A lot would come in to watch games, and really not buy anything in the way of alcohol or meals and really would just watch the games and take off. They did for some time have a cover charge to get into the bigger games which would get you a drink at the bar which they thought might help the problem a bit to maximise the drinkers in the venue. But the problem is the Rosemont has chopped and changed who they want their core patrons to be, they were a sports bar and that is what they should have continued to do. Bringing in Dj's and having a coffee bar setup there was never going to work.
