I am thinking of shelling out some cash for a Foxtel subscription.

Im thinking of getting the basic package + sport.

Just wondering from people who have it, is it worth it?

I am on the same package.

Obviously opinions will vary but if you love watching repeats of American shows, then go for it! I really only watch the sport and the odd comedy here and there. The partner watches the girly shows but I don't think we are getting our money's worth. The novelty wore off pretty quickly :(

How much is the package? About $50 per month?

I have all the channels and I think its worth it. Will the starter package + sport be worth it. Yes just for the sport. But for me, most of the channels I watch arent in the starter package (i guess thats the point though), but if you like your american tv shows then TV1, Fox 8 and Arena should be enough to keep you interested.

Starter ($39.95) and sport ($12.95) is around $50 mark.

We also have the IQ box (not HD), which bumps the price up to about $65. IQ is great as you can program recordings very easily and it allows you to record a program and watch a separate fox channel at the same time, something you can't do with the standard box.

Another thing to note is that the resolution for some channels is pretty poor, particularly noticeable with bigger TVs. This is due to the lower bitrate. Component cables do help but don't expect DVD quality picture...unless you have IQ2 :)

Foxtel is great when you first get it. After a while, it wanes.

The sport is ok... you just have to be in the right place at the right time unless you can watch anything.

I started on Platinum. If you can afford it - keep it. You'll more often than not have plenty to choose from.

Now I've got the starter and sport. Wife doesn't let me watch much sport, and the rest of the channels are pretty average. Just torrent programs you like.

I think we're gonna ditch it soon.

i have foxtel.
only the basic package plus sport.
ive pretty much had it for a fair chunk of my life and its good because there is always something to watch. but it really depends on what you like.
its easy for me coz i like a lot of the shows like sex and the city, will and grace, one tree hill, family guy, etc. all the shows that arent on tv often.
but you need to decide if its worth it.
if you arent home often enough to watch it then there is really no point in having it

I made a post about this in an old Foxtel topic so I'm just pasting it again (with some alterations):

FOX Sports 1, FOX Sports 2, FOX Sports 3, ESPN Australia, Setanta Sports and BBC World would be the reasons I'd get it. BBC World News is neat for world news and current affairs programming and the sports channels have stuff I'm interested in that FTA doesn't have (American sports, various soccer, overseas cricket, various rugby). Sky News is also nifty for things like live Australian political press conferences but not much else.

The movie channels I never had when I had Foxtel previously but I imagine they'd be alright if you like their offerings. I'm not sure how wide their selection is. World Movies sounds interesting.

Aside from that the rest is stuff that has already aired on FTA or was so crap FTA never bothered to air it. The rare gems that get first run on Foxtel (Dexter, Deadwood) can just be downloaded easily for free before they air here. Some rave about the History channels war docos but they didn't really seem any better than the sort of docos you get on ABC and SBS already.

I gather there is a bit of a two fold problem with Foxtel atm.

Firstly the sheer choice of shows makes it worse for people to make a decision, because there should be something else on (this is something I have seen first hand)

and shows that are good, you don't know anything about until you watch it because Foxtel isn't really covered well in the Australia media. For instance I have a mate with foxtel and the first time he'd seen breaking bad was after he downloaded it after reading comments about it. I was like dude you have Foxtel !! but he had never heard of it until he visted foxtel

i'm going to get it, eventually, when i'm home enough to watch it or AFL goes there more than 1 game a week or the Crows are covered on FTA

Make sure you get the IQ. Worth it just for Fox Sports 1-3, Nat Geo Adventure, ESPN, Nat Geo and Discovery.

We have most of the channels...lifestyle, travel, docos etc including all movie channels (if u like movies!!..cant stand em) my husband does tho.....We got it initially for the racing and foxfooty channel .....

We would be lost without it.......so much choice, can always find something to watch..

We have it. Mum currently has it on Basic + Movies. Occasionally we swap to Basic + Sport. All I really watch is sport and Fox 8. I always seem to spend half my day watching Fox Sports News.

We got it about 6 weeks ago where it was free installation and platinum package for a month. We have decided to keep the platinum package and
I heard a rumour that you get two free box office movies a month with platinum, is this true?

Yep.

Foxtel customer service is disgusting. They really rushed the IQ2 as there is way too many bugs with it.

Hang on better get my definitions right. We dont have the Iq2 Hi Def package. I thought platinum was was all channels excluding the IQ2 Hi Def features.

Sorry mate should have been clearer.

Platinum package on any service has the 2 free movies a month, think that has been the case with Foxtel for quite a while.

However Box Office HD movies are only delivered through the On Demand feature.

After getting shithouse service for so long (My On Demand feature isn't working) CBF dealing with shitheads, so I ditched the platinum package.

IMO the movies package is way too expensive, honestly you'll have to 10+ movies per month to get value from it.

Got Foxtel with IQ about six months ago. Had the platinum package at half price for three months. Went nuts taping movies and I'm slowly going through them as I don't have a heap of time to watch movies atm, what I have will probably keep me going for another six months!
