It's not really a poker game. You don't have to commit to cancelling. You just flag that you don't feel you're getting value for money, and you're exploring your options.

Pay TV is one of those strange beasts where once you have a customer on board, it costs you virtually nothing in order to service them on an ongoing basis. Your monthly subscription fee is pretty much all gross margin.

In fact not only that, but even if they gave you the product for free you would still have value to them. The more customers they have, the more their advertising space is worth. And every customer they lose, they need to replace - not only through finding that customer through advertising, but shelling out a substantial amount from their own pocket for the free installation they offer. There is a big opportunity cost involved in losing a subscriber.

The massive incentive they have to keep subscribers therefore means (a) you have them over a barrel, and (b) Foxtel knows it - in fact it's part of their strategy. The whole reason they charge so much for a package uprfront, yet are so willing to give discounts, is because they want every customer to feel like they're getting a great deal. A customer who feels like they are getting a great deal isn't going to consider cancelling their service - because they're onto such a good thing, you see.

If they have to throw you a bone in terms of a hefty monthly discount or whatever to give you that impression, it's worth it. You're happy because you feel like you've screwed them on the subscription. They're happy because they've still got money flowing in for virtually no cost, and a very satisfied (and more loyal) customer. Everybody wins.

Yeah, this is the second time we've had it and when we got it disconnected the first time they tried to over us all kinds of sweet deals. Was hard to refuse, but wasn't in a good spot financially at the time.

I will be threatening to walk again soon tho to see if I can cut some of the cost down

Does anyone else find the MyStar (or IQ as it's called with Foxtel) a little bit buggy? There's been numerous occasions where I've paused then come back and hit play or fast fwd and it's jumped back to the start of the program or back to live or some other weird shit.

Why have the movie channels gotten so shit?

Everytime I look to see what movies are on I can never recognize any of them. Most of them I can't even remember seeing advertised for the cinemas. Movies like 'Exterminators', 'Assassination of a High School President' getting a run on MovieOne... what the **** are these B-grade peices of crap?

I've had the platinum package for years now, couldn't live without it. Being able to record anything, as well as pause and rewind live TV is awesome.

Thinking about getting it but the channels par the sport witch is a given in my house l want are on a differnet packages.l want the CI TLC history NAT geo fox8.so really the sport and the knowledge & adventure channel would be alright but its X amount which is more that l wanna spend.a guy at work works for foxtel and will give me credit for the first month etc he wont shut up about it l going to punch him soon.l think l can get it cheaper thou telstra with a T box dont sure what channels they have on the cheap package.grr.
