I’m a self confessed “fraghead” (I believe is the term) so I decided to start a thread as I can’t seem to find one around here and there seems to be quite a lot of people out there who are really into their fragrances.

So there’s a quick set of questions if you want to answer but also set this up just for general discussion too.

I know travel is off the agenda at the moment, but when sanity returns you should treat yourself to a visit to Grasse in France. It is an amazing place with lots of bespoke parfumeries, museums and tours.

I did a half day course at Galimard Parfumerie, where you get to make your own fragrance and take home a 100ml bottle at the end. They keep your formula on file and you can get them to make it up for you at any time. Mine ended up not being great sadly, but it was interesting to learn some of the dcience around what goes into making a frsgrance.

Would highly recommend it.

Flowerbomb is quite nice. One of my exes used to wear it as her daily driver.

Acqua di Gio is a nice scent but every second bloke wears it. I used to have a rather un-PC boss who called it Acqua di Guido.

My favourite at the moment is Penhaligon’s Endymion.
 
Have got a bunch of Creed and Amouage samples on the way. Really interested in the Amouage one's in particular as all the reviews say their stuff is very different to the type of stuff we commonly smell in the West.

I've got samples of Royal Oud and Green Irish Tweed from Creed and both are excellent, I'd probably buy GIT first of the two.

Found most of the 'mainstream' scents that are popular on r/fragrance don't do it for me, there's something that gets in my nose with them that I really don't like. Sauvage and Terre D'Hermes were mentioned as some of the all-timers people loved, and I just didn't like them.

My two favourites recently have been Tom Ford - Ombre Leather and MFK - L'Homme A La Rose. Both very different but consistently love wearing them.

Viktor & Rolf - Spicebomb is a low-key one I keep coming back to that is my daily driver for work as it's relatively inexpensive (by fragrance standards) and pretty subtle.

I’m fairly sure somewhere along the way it got reformulated, I recall the older version being more pronounced and remember googling about it and a lot of people were saying similar.

If you’ve got the OG version it’s (I think) more similar to Spicebomb Extreme now

I'm allergic to any colognes with chemicals in. I use essential oils and make up my own cologne.
 
I'm not a massive afficionado like you guys, but I'll add my two cents.

First, I don't wear my fragrances around the house; it's a waste of money if you're not rolling in gold. Additionally, who are you going to impress? The point of fragrances is to appear classy and refined (at a job interview), and sensual, refined and seductive (when dating).

The ones I've worn down the years:
2010-2012:
Chanel Allure Homme Sport
Ideal most of the time for Brisbane, so-so during winter because of its tangy, citrus-dominated flavour. I borrowed this from my father (who in turn obtained it from his boss) when going out to job interviews and for university graduation. I didn't know how to wear it properly back then, because I didn't use colognes except on very rare occasions. Sporty fragrances tend to be better for younger people, which is likely why my father didn't bother buying it again.

2013-2019:
Yves St Laurent L'Homme Libre
The perfect fragrance for subtropical climates like Brisbane's. It even works well during Brisbane winters, since our blustery cold (rather than the seeping cold you boys get down south that you feel on your skin) just sends the fragrance further. My brother and I bought this; he still uses it. Again, worn only for birthday parties, dates, and job interviews.

Excudes a masculine yet spicey, youthful scent that my dates liked. Doesn't work so well in Italian near-winters though. I could get away with applying very little in Brisbane; in Europe I had to apply double the amount. IMO OK during night, at least in subtropical climates, but I wouldn't bother wearing it during a colder night in a colder location.

2020 - present:
Terre d'Hermes
My current fragrance. Pretty good all-year round in subtropical climates, but maybe not quite as good during Brisbane's summer. The citrus and fresh spicy flavours still allow it to smell reasonably nice during summer (my father liked it), but the woody flavour IMO gives the scent a bit more of a musty tinge. Have worn this one more liberally - going to churches, birthday parties, meetups with friends, doctor's appointments, weddings, dates etc. Brisbane's hot winds help it to project further.

The scent is masculine and is broadly suitable for all ages due to combining citrus/fresh spicy scents (youthful) with woody scents (more for old age IMO), but would lean towards a younger profile. Would be a bit old for early-20 somethings, but anywhere from 25-35 would make you look mature for your age, I think. Projects a bit more than the L'Homme Libre during night.

It's quite telling that I'd pick the critic's/people's favourite, given my lack of confidence in my ability to pick out a good fragrance given what little I know about them. I don't regret receiving it, not least because it was a Christmas present! While Terre d'Hermes is no doubt the better all-round fragrance, I do subjectively prefer the L'Homme Libre's spicy scent. Still, it is what it is.

Shows that scent is a subjective thing, and whether you like one depends largely on both the scents you prefer, how you'll use the fragrance, and the location you're in.

I can't imagine Terre d'Hermes going too well during Melbourne winters, and it would surely wear off during the daily 'rainy season'? Plus, while Melbourne's winter wasn't as blustery as Brisbane's, the cold there seeped right into my skin and screwed with my immune system. Lots of phlegm was phlicked when I was down there! :sick:

So I imagine the fragrance wouldn't project that far in Melbourne compared to Brisbane, and it would be even worse at night.

OTOH, Terre d'Hermes should do a decent job in Melbourne outside of May-September, when the temperatures rise enough to make the fragrance worthwhile. And your summers should do more for Terre D'Hermes than ours did, even without hot winds propelling them so consistently (from memory, Melbourne was less windy than Brisbane, on the whole - that's what being near the Pacific gets you).

If I was to travel to Melbourne during winter, which I've done before FWIW, I'd apply up to 2 times more than I would in Brisbane.

Chanel Allure Homme. Though it's not what it once was. Was amazing back in the late 90s when it came out but the newer recipe isn't as good.

JPG Le Male still works well for the middle aged man.

Someone gave me a bottle of Fahrenheit and I tried it once and insisted they take it back.

Rouge Trafalgar - Dior, Miss Dior, Lipstick Fever - Juliette has a gun, Poison girl - Dior, Her - Burberry

Either miss Dior or poison girl, because I’ve gone through multiple bottles of each

3. What was the last fragrance(s) you purchased or were gifted?
So my mum is a fragrance specialist and I get them for free lol.

But my mum brought me Burberry Her recently.

4. How many fragrances do you own?
Too many to count

5. What was the first fragrance you ever owned?
The one direction one I think it’s called moments 🤣

I really like sweet smelling scents, I cannot stand floral.

Right now in my rotation is poison girl, Her and I want choo by jimmy choo
