For those of you with iphones, download the TuneIn Radio app. You can listen to basically every radio station from anywhere in the world. I'm listening to one in New York called WNYC-FM 93.9. They - like most news stations - are giving all of their coverage to the storm. Great way to get a feel for what's going on.

This is the Con Ed plant in Manhattan before Sandy.

Over exaggerated bullshit from the US media. It'll be no more than a little bit of wind and rain.

You don't know how wrong you are.

The storm itself started as a hurricane in the Caribbean. Normally it would head north and drift out to sea off the coast off the NE US, but there was a big blocking pattern in that area off Greenland and the eastern coast of Canada which stopped its usual progress, in conjunction with the jet stream, which usually hangs out around Canada and north (though it varies a lot). The jet stream dipped well south with a cold front along the leading edge, which basically grabbed the system and pulled it to the west.

It's extremely unusual, and some of the flooding along the coast is amazing. Streets in Manhattan are awash because it's so low-lying and bounded by two rivers and the harbour to the south. coastal New Jersey is going to be a major disaster zone come daylight.

Making things worse, the system is basically going to stall out along the line of the jet stream and wander around the NE, dumping rain for the next two days.

It's actually been very windy here in Atlanta too, which is a by-product of the system. We aren't seeing any rain, but it has been much colder yesterday and today than usual, because the jet stream brought cold air down here too.

For those who think it hasn't amounted to anything - so far, more than 3 million households are without power, at least nine people are dead in NY and NJ, and there will be thousands of people homeless along the coast. But nah, just another overhyped storm.

Just saw this photo of the Manhattan skyline:

It's hard to fathom New York in near-darkness.

Know someone who lives in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, where there's toxic flooding. This might be macabre, but if there's one place that was to be flooded, New York isn't too bad. I mean, surely half the population live in apartments?

In Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx yes. Everywhere else no, its pretty much urban sprawl. At least that's what I remember from when I went there.

HappyChappy35 that pic looks really eerie.

In Brooklyn at the moment. Doesn't seem as bad as they have made it out to be. A few trees and signs down and had few hours without any rain.

Has started coming down again. Plenty of people out walking the streets stills.

And, it's totally bugging me that they've nicknamed this hurricane Frankenstorm. It should be Frankenstein's storm.

/literarynerd.

I can see the Frankenstorm being another Cyclone Yasi, that was supposed to be a monster cyclone and turned out to be a fizzer.
Just because no one died in the cyclone doesn't mean it was a fizzer. It was forecast perfectly.
