I have no special spot for the Hawks.. but lets be clear. If the AFL has ANY thing to do with him leaving then this whole thing is farce for the game.

We got fisted on the GAJ deal and I truly hope that Vlad does not fist you guys the same way. Its bad enough that we had to go through what we did to help Vlad's wet dream but to have another have to endure it is just stupid. I stand up as a Cats fan and applaud any Hawks fan / member that opposes this BS.

Best of luck for the year and I really hope this rubbish just dies....

Go Catters

If GWS were going to give Buddy 1.2 mil a season, I'd want to try to match that so we could force a trade. Be better trading Buddy for Whitfield and GWS first pick/other GWS player than losing buddy for pick 20

Thats almost a cunning plan

Buddy Hodge and Mitchs contracts up for renewal top three players at the club would be approaching 2 mill combined

If the HQ has said bud has to go, if Hodge and Mitch are onside we can match any offer and force a trade

Buddy goes for a young talent and a low pick then we get another experienced player through free agency

Then sign up Hodge and Mitch

Might be a bit of a balancing act though

Im really warming to the idea now, just need to maintain the team harmony
Could be a very different Hawks team lining up in 2014

If the AFL dare pays Franklin or anybody else for that matter to move to GWS that'll be it for me and the game. I'd prefer to support the local leagues (VFL, underage and district leagues) than support the AFL any further.

I hope you guys sign him or if not he goes anywhere other than GWS.

This may make everyone feel slightly better

Him going to the GWS and us being well compensated is better than keeping him under a judd type scenario

Ie paid too much which limits the potential strength of the rest of the list

Whatever people say, the gws are a long way off being a premiership force

Robbo's article was probably a little mischievous in that he has taken a comment and made it add up to a whole lot more than was probably reality.

What I would have liked to have seen/heard today is our President making a stand that comments like these from the AFL are inappropriate.
Good on Ed this morning for going crook but I would rather see our club making a stand than having the Collingwood Prez fight our battles.

If the prez had made a stand it would have given the story oxygen.

In fact in hindsight you wonder if this was a reason the falafel shop sketch came to be. Hmmmmm......

Andy Doublespeak is getting worse:

While a fired-up Demetriou confirmed the AFL could make Franklin an ambassador, he said the League would play no part in supplying any incentive for the Hawks star to leave the club.

So... you won't provide any incentive for him to leave Hawthorn. Except for money. Just saying that this is even a possibility is actually an inducement in itself. So he has literally denied that the AFL would be involved in providing any incentive for him to leave Hawthorn, and then immediately given him an incentive to leave Hawthorn!

As much as I don't want him leaving, the scenario of Hodge & Mitchell holding off their contract negotiations to give us the funds to match a $1.2million offer from GWS doesn't sound that bad. It would then turn into a trade scenario in which we can demand a fair bit. Whitfield and a first round draft pick? After this we can sign Hodge & Mitchell and then with the money we saved from Franklin we can buy someone from free agency.

It'd suck for him to be leave, but it wouldn't hurt us too much. We would lose an A+ KPF for something like 2 A mids + something else.
We're well covered in the KPP area.
Roughead (FWD/DEF)
Schoenmakers (FWD/DEF)
Gunston (FWD)
---
Shem (Training with level 2 AIS boys, big guns tipped to go top 10 in this years draft)
Heatherly (Tipped to go top 20 in this years draft)
Boseley (Tipped to go top 30, fell to rookie due to injury)
Brand & Grimley (Other project players)

Hawthorn FC will come out on top whether he signs or not. Ride the bumps with a grin.

P.S He'll sign with us, I can see it.

Bud is a restricted free agent which means we have the right to match any offer from another club. What Vlad has done is completely prejudicial to this process by inferring that the offer on the table from GWS will in fact be increased by *some amount* once he signs.

This can only be seen as contradictory to the AFL's own free agency model?

Luckily I don't believe the legal fraternity will be scared off by the supreme leader and his belief that his rule is above the laws of the land.

Good point!!!

The AFL have introduce specific rules on restricted free Agency???
So how are the hawks supposed to match Franklin's offer if the AFL are willing to change their rules and are willing to pay him outside the salary cap should he chooses to leave Hawthorn for GWS????

It want happen....If the AFL and Dimetriou are gonna make sure Buddy goes to GWS and the AFL becomes a party to any deal in order to make this happen it will become obvious that the AFL are manipulating the salary cap to make sure he gets there.... GWS already have been given enough concessions...If this really happens it will expose and show how out of control and corrupt the AFL really are, and opens a huge legal door for the HFC to sue the AFL....

Scenarios in order of like:

Buddy re signs for fair $$$$

Buddy goes to GWS for a good trade

Buddy re signs but squeezes our cap for a few years to come

Buddy goes to the green bay packers

Buddy goes to GWS for not much

Buddy goes to a rival club for a good trade

Buddy goes to a rival club for not much

If you listen to Vlads response, he is pretty strong in what the real position is.

I chalk this one up to Robbo.
His real position is that he's annoyed by the article.

He said that he wouldn't offer inducement for Buddy or anyone else to change clubs BUT
If the commercial team suggested an ambassador deal for Buddy (conditional on GWS getting him) then he'd consider it.

Either AD doesn't realise that money is an inducement or he's disappearing up his own backside with double speak and vagueness.

While I agree getting a trade would be the best outcome if he does decide to leave the only problem with the above is that if GWS aren't prepared to do a trade once we match the offer. We'll be forced to find another trade with a club who can pay said $1.2M/year (or end up paying part of it ourselves) or keep him on at a wage we really can't afford to pay him. Hodge and Mitchell will then either have to accept well under their value to stay or move on themselves. Either way it wouldn't be a nice environment to work in if that happened.

Bloody AFL have history here. Welcome to being a pawn in the developing markets North of the boarder. We have been victims of it repeatedly. Hope the AFL come off this one, but with their love affair of big news stories in the offseason, you could be in trouble.

Ah, for the VFL pre AFL days...

There was talk of the with Goddard. I am certain that the contract needs to be ready to sign and evidence submitted to show it is affordable ad within the salary cap. They have you either way, and even if PI play within their system they may fine you $500k for the hell of it.

Its a bloody disgrace the AFL interfering, not more than draft tampering!!

Vlad wont be happy till GWS and GC win the next decade of premierships and he'll do whatever he needs to, to make it happen.
