The ultimate battle

The greatest Forward in todays game

vs

The greatest Fullback of all time

If there was some way we could match these two against one another who do you think would come out on top

I think Franklin would find Silvagni a very frustrating opponent.

That said its impossible to tell who would beat who. Silvagni was Full Back of the Century for a reason, but Franklin is an absolute freak. It's entirely possible that he could be held for 95% of a game and still manage three or four goals within five minutes.

I have a feeling that Franklin would take a poo on Silvagni. That said I voted for Silvagni to make the poll look better for SOS.

buddy vs sos

how about we reverse the rolls and put SOS up forward, how well would franklin do as a defender??

sos = incredible defence and goal kicking ability
buddy = incredible goal kicking ability

Don't buy into that mate. He wasn't the best FB of all-time, he's not even Carlton's best ever FB.

well if franklin was on a lead he would, oh richo from the side what a mark from the tiger.
a sad day when he retires

lol...WTF?:)

Silvagni would be incapable of stopping a forward in today's game, the only move he had was to scrag an opponent, a free would be paid against him every time now.

If Silvagni was playing now not only would Franklin dominate him, but even someone like Brad Miller would clean him up.

Silvagni would have franklin's measure. He's too strong. Is agile enough and a great spoil. Whether its 2008 or 1998, SOS would dominate.

Not under today's rules that forbid jumper pulling and arm chopping. Franklin is far too tall tall and agile and could handle Silvagni with one arm tied behind his back.

So you don't think a champion player from another era could adapt to current rule interpretations? It continues to amaze me how some people seem to think today's players have it over players from previous eras. You take a champion from any period in the game's history, bring them to 2008 with the access to elite training facilities, full time coaching staff, physical & medical experts, DVD & computer analysis of players & so on & they would be as good as today's leading players.

When the stricter interpretation of the hands in the back rule & arm chopping rule were introduced, the experts cried 'foul', saying it would spell the end for certain players, yet here we are a short time afterwards & the majority of players have adapted to the stricter interpretations.

If we were to accept what you say as being right, that would mean you are saying that Franklin is better than Carey, Gary Ablett snr, Dunstall, Lockett etc. Players that Silvagni regularly played on & mastered (although Lockett probably gave Silvagni his biggest challenge).

jumper pulling was never allowed...
Silvagni easily has the height and agility to go with Franklin, and he'd be stronger too. Either 1998 or 2008 Silvagni would have Franklin's measure.

How's SOS's motor? Franklin would just run to the wing and back until SOS fell over and then play the next three quarters without an opponent.

He was incredibly fit, I don't think SOS will have a problem.

TBH, this is a hard choice. Either can win, given they're on song. But to suggest SOS was "just" a scragger is the height of ignorance. His core body strength was tough enough to stand up against the likes of Lockett, he had a great closing speed and had the agility to land some great spoils. His marking ability was also very good.

According to your very self?

Then why was Silvagni picked the FB position in Carlton's TotC ahead of Southby?

Who is the "best" FB is entirely subjective, several players can make claim to that... SOS included. If it wasn't SOS picked in the TOTC, it would've been Regan. Or Dench. Or Moore. Etc. Then we'd all be bitching how any of those players weren't the best FB, and we'd be making cases for players like SOS and Langford.

SOS would be Franklins bitch with todays rules.

Silvagni forged his reputation on literally hanging off his opponents and using dirty scragging tactics.

Therefore SOS is a complete dud and should never be recognised as a decent footballer. I cant understand why SOS would be the only player in the history of the game to use those tactics... hmmm
