Imagine the shit storm if Sydney were to get him!

- Very rarely missing the 8 since their previous premiership (just the once I believe)
- Winning the 2012 flag and still being able to spend a ridiculous amount on getting a key forward in Kurt Tippet
- Likely finish top 4 again this season
- Possibly go back-to-back but will likely at least make a preliminary final

After all that to then be able to come out and throw a truck load of cash at Buddy would surely have to be the end of the CoLA for them.

The only positive of him going to Sydney is that we'd likely be able to match that offer so it will force a trade if he really wants to move. We can get JPK back and maybe take that Tom Mitchell fella too (Sydney have made it clear that father-son players are fair game after all)...
Is ok for syddy to fleece other clubs in recruiting but het ready for a media shitstorm if it seems we might get better value back

Remember the whining over ROK ?

The 3 things not considered here though are:

- Buddy is a marketing and promotional phenomena from which we benefit immeasurably. This is something that simply cannot to be underestimated and is arguably more important than even winning grand finals in the short term (as crazy as that sounds). Our growth because of Buddy is immense and the support he drums up for the club literally on his ow has the capacity to take us into the echelon of Collingwood Essendon in the foreseeable future. What we would we give to enter the MCG to a Collingwood-esque crowd +80,000 of Hawthorn supporters week in week out?
- We are in the premiership window with him. Why mess with the equation?
- Having Buddy Franklin as a one club Hawthorn man (even after retirement) is important and will mean a lot to him and to us when it comes to pass. If he is moved on this will be diluted and this once in a generation player will be, like Darren Jarman, only partly outs.

I wouldn't give Buddy up for anything.
I concur but a normal career would have us losing buddy and the tassie gig at roughly the same time. In some ways it will be better for them to happen a few years apart

No way.Not acting like a very good leader is he?9 year vet loves the club and everyone there but can't bring himself to commit.

Salary cap space is looking good and probably why everyone else is getting their contracts sewn up cos Buddy is gone(probably)

*sigh* Another reason to bash Buddy.

Has he asked to be captain?
No, but it gives the "supporters" another justification to bitch.

Complete horseshit.
Why are you so emphatic about that eldo - nothing would surprise me tbh, especially if they get the increase in Cola they are looking for and some more retirements and no doubt we will hear once again how wonderful they are at list management and how there are heaps of them on back ended contracts - I can hear the justification already

No way in the world could they conjure another $1.5 million per year after forking out top dollar for Tippett...and still hope to retain all their own players, who will also be looking for a slice of the pie...even with the CoLa, it's almost inconcievable.

What is horseshit, though, is the matter-of-fact way people come on here and talk about these scenarios as if they are fact. "Has been talking to Sydney for months" etc etc. It's all piss in the wind...

The one thing we have going for us is that if Buddy goes north he will be required to be front and centre at media/corporate events. Something he clearly hates.
Less money at Hawthorn, but with less responsibility and exposure is a huge factor I think he is weighing up.
They couldn't even get him into 360 last night for a 5 minute spot.

The media's recent interpretation of comments made by Buddy and Pickering is overly optimistic as far as Hawthorn's concerned. Buddy saying that "I love Hawthorn and I want to stay" means nothing until he puts pen to paper, and Pickering continuing to say that Hawthorn are "in the box seat" would be the smart thing to say if you wanted to drive his price up elsewhere. Listening to Buddy's interview on AFL 360 did not fill me with confidence. "I want to stay, but..."

No way would sydney be talking to buddy now. I believe they would have spike to him last year about his free agency, guessing by the aggressiveness we chased tippett I doubt very highly he would have indicated the swans as a possibility. I would scratch the swans as a possible suitor. No way will it happen

I have a suspicion we could get two players who are 60% as good as bud for 90% of the cost, meaning a 150 % better outcome with a 50% chance both players are out injured

Wou cant put so much resource into one player unless you have a safety net like gws or gcs
You are probably right. Perhaps the Afl will allow us to put 19 players on the ground?

I think the opposite. If it's on Bigfooty, you can bookmark it.;)
What numbers have you got spare at the moment? How about 1?
And have you got a guernsey in something other than red? It's not his "favourite" colour.

Yeah no. Why would we trade JPK and Mitchell when Buddy is FA? The salary cap goes up again next year and the following year, and we're in an era where we're close to losing Bolton, Goodes, ROK and possibly LRT to retirement over the next 2 years.

The best Hawthorn could hope for is Mumford if we wanted to clear up some more space, but we'd be the losers in that trade because you need a ruckmen but we don't need another forward.

No thanks.

haha, We don't need the best forward in the game, we have Tippet!

That's like Carlton saying they don't need Mitchell because they have McLean.

* Buddy wont go to Sydney.

You'd need to trade because even with all that extra money from the CoLA and the money freed up with vet's list (which isn't as much as it used to be under the new system) you wouldn't be able to offer more than what we would be able to match. Hence you'd have to trade for him.

Why all this talk about salary cap space? Lets say we want to get Thomas from Collingwood, it'll cost us 700k+ a year to prise him away. OK now we've lost Buddy and gained Thomas, thats not a good deal for us. But we still have 300k left you say. 300k gets us a B grade player at best. I think some fans magically think we're going to land the likes of Dangerfield and Fyfe if Buddy doesn't sign.

That's poor logic. The fact is we already have Tippett and Reid to come back, so as good as Franklin is we'd be worse off with him if it meant we only have a 29 yr old Pyke as our leading ruckman.

That's why I mentioned Mumford as a hypothetical. We wouldn't have to release Kennedy and Mitchell on top of upcoming retirements to afford Franklin.

Having said that I think getting him would be a very big mistake as I have stated on the Sydney board.

If Sydney takes out the premiership, Goodes may retire....he's turning 34, throw in Bolton, that's a fair chunk of the salary cap freed up.

Its not beyond them.

Actually two players taking up 2 to 2.5 million dollars of the salary cap is unrealistic.

Will not happen, the in would have explored the option before signing Tippett

Mumford is not happy at the swans, apparently they will not pay what Mumford wants. I know that the Hawks are very interested in him!Geelong lost him, when you offered a ridiculous amount to get him,the rats were very "mad" when they lost him to you.Now you won't offer him what he wants, but I have no idea what the Hawks will offer him, via his agent, of course. Interesting days ahead!
