So Pickers approached Sydney at the end of last year. Staggered. This move is nearly as good as the Ross Lyon one. The ability to keep this under wraps till now is an amazing effort from those involved. How happy do you reckon Clarko will be with Pickers about this.

Sen has reported today that Buddy's management spoke to Sydney about playing for them 2 weeks after playing in the 2012 GF.
But Liam Pickering has only been dealing with Hawthorn. And he's very confident Bud is staying.....
Clarko, find a new manager mate.

In my opinion, I'm sad because he is such a superstar.

However, given that we are moving towards the Free agent system we have to deal with it.

We do get a draft pick in compensation (but that is out of whack as we are penalised for where we finish on the table). It should be like the NFL (US) where it is based on the players salary, position they were drafted and ability. That is really where we are getting penalised.

As for buddy, I don't mind him leaving, but again it is Vlad and the Sydney higher salary cap that is more of a concern. Not buddy's decision itself.

Dissapointing decision but life will move on. I have faith in the Hawthorn Administration.

I'm with threefingers on this one.

Let's remember that there was another man who left hawthorn and donned the number 23 and is one of our best ever players.

His name is Dermott Brereton.

Sure Dermott's best years may have been behind him, but we were all raw when that happened. The club also seemed to be imploding at the time. Mass exodus/retirements, terrible debt.

Think where we are now. The club has never been more powerful. We have a successful side with good administration. We just won the premiership for gods sake. With Buddy gone, we can go after some quality others in the market.

I will always remember buddy for his service to us. In time, I'm sure we will forgive him and remember what he gave to us.

For me, I will always remember witnessing him kick 100 goals against Carltank and kicking those two amazing goals against The Scum.

Those goals against The Scum were the highlight of my day, as I had just gone through the stress of an exam and it really let me end the day/week on a high.

We are Hawthorn.

PS. Dear mods, I wanna change my username to "RoyalRoughead" or something similar. PM on the procedure.

PPS: I see the irony in that the exam was on "Equity and Trusts".

Interesting point. Clarko is just about to start negotiations for a new contract. Dump Pickers now and Pickers will lose his massive contract. Clarko would be one of his top 5 clients I'd imagine.

Been trying to keep my Buddy love in check. Knew he was leaving long before the GF and love the memories but it's hearing this shit about wanting to move to Sydney a year ago.............

It's hard.

Sydney can GAGF. COLA can GAGF. As for Buddy, time may heal but right now I feel like he can GAGF too.

For all those who harbor the opinion that Buddy has given us great service....
We went to him over 60% of our forward 50 entries, as one of the highest 50 entry sides in the comp since 2007, he converted at under 50%.

Our coaches & players made Buddy who he is today. We have proven that we can manipulate and direct forward supply to anyone we choose.

Sure buddy sometimes kicked goals that others may not have been capable, but the fact is his conversion probably cost us more than we realize as he was our chosen one.

As of today as far as I am concerned, Buddy was blessed to have been "the" beneficiary of our game plan and our midfields hard work.

He is now someone I do not support, he is opposition and someone I hope we hit harder than we've ever hit anyone before.

Absolutely guttered and very angry.

Seems it was "taken into account".
He got 3 weeks doubled to 6. They sent it straight to tribunal because they didn't think it was a fair penalty for what he did. They decided a week would suffice. Why have double penalties if their going to be selective? Brian should've got 1 then based on their logic. If they have rules keep them.

Now, from a different supporter's perspective, this Buddy move to Sydney is total bull. I was OK with Tippett's move thinking it was smart of them to maximise the resources at their disposal. But to get Franklin as well? Surely there's only so much they can do without being penalised. The money on offer is unbelievable too. I still think that what you guys offered him, and what Sydney did, was way over. The man is a gun. No doubt. He had an off year and still kicked 60-odd goals. But he hasn't really been the same since he tore the competition apart in 2008. Now that could change. But I don't see his value being much more than $800k-$900k. Not really $1 million.

I do feel sorry for you guys and even worse, the compensation will be lousy. Pick 20 or something, wasn't it? But if you take a step back, Hawks are probably better without the distraction. Only question is whether Gunston can perform as well as he has, with a top quality defender on him (as opposed to getting the 3rd or 4th defender).

Some positives out of this development would be that Alistair Clarkson is a frikken genius. Changed our game plan drastically to not be so Buddy centric and the games he was out we won quite comfortably. Make no mistake, I love watching Buddy, got his jersey and heaps of fond memories however IMO we will only get better and B2B 2014 is looking all the more likely!! GO HAWKS!!!

To be honest Buddy didn't do much in the GF. Just ran around the ground throwing his weight around and shanked a set shot almost as bad as Nat Fyfe. We should contact Jonathan Brown and get him to play decoy while crushing skulls around the ground.

I just had a thought, a bit similar to last week.

HFC are very quiet at the moment. I know it's only been a few hours since the announcement, but the HFC website seems very focused on the premiership glories. I know there's a statement, but it's very minimal.

HFC were underestimated last week. It's happening again.

Stay tuned for our return fire!

Well
Thank you Lance for making going to the footy so much fun
I told my six year old daughter that buddy doesn't play for the hawks anymore tonight
She cried
She has been wearing her buddy badge since Saturday but now it's in the bin
Yep, people are going to react in different ways, sadness, betrayal, anger and reflection
For myself, I will reflect and continue to remind myself what a wonderful club I support
The premiership is fresh in my mind and being there was surreal

Good luck Bud
Going to the footy will be less fun without you

What crawf had to say

Late this afternoon I sat down with my eldest boy Charlie Crawford and told him that Buddy was leaving the Hawks and heading to the Sydney Swans his reaction as a 7 year-old boy slightly surprised me…he started to cry.

Did the news shock me? No it didn’t. I spent some one on one time with Buddy in the Hawks locker rooms after the win on Saturday and Buddy was highly emotional. After seeing him in this state it didn’t take much to know there was something else playing on his mind.

Knowing Buddy as a team-mate and a friend I know this would have been the toughest decision of his life. In my opinion, this season would have been a long, drawn out one for Buddy as even he wouldn’t have known how things were going to unfold until the final weeks of the season. One thing is for sure – his heart is at Hawthorn.
I think there is a lot more to this story than financial gain.

This decision allows his an element of freedom that he wouldn’t have experienced since his early twenties. Perhaps this is even a reason why the deal with GWS didn’t proceed – they were positioning him to be “the face of their club” after all.

The start of the 2014 season is going to be hard to watch with the Big Bud dressed as a Swan but how lucky were we to have Buddy on our side for nine years and contributing to two Premierships for the Hawks?

So one last word to you Buddy…

I have a clear memory of our first training camp together at Kokoda when you were given your 24 hour ration pack and ate it in the first five minutes. We were told very clearly how important it was for you to learn to manage your rations and instructed not to give you any of our food supply. We failed dismally because we loved you then and we still love you to bits now…ALWAYS.

Sadly it sounds like Crawf was deceived like everyone else.
Unfortunate.

If we aren't going to match the deal I hope at the very least hawthorn go over every aspect of the deal and make sure it is all above board. If Sydney want to offer Franklin that deal good luck to them but we should ensure that the deal structure means every cent of it should be within the cap. No get-out clauses that enable them to pay him out after five years outside the cap. And we should have an undertaking from the AFL that this will remain the case.
I strongly suspect a lot of the logic behind the 9year aspect of the deal is:

- Inflation and salary cap increase. if it's backloaded the $1.1m a year will be a considerably smaller % of the salary cap when it's paid out.
- Potential of COLA being terminated and ability to lock in 10yrs of future external payments
- The knowledge that 9yrs is a long time. Sydney's administration will have changed by then. The AFL administration will have changed by then. The issue will be completely dormant and not worthy of any scrutiny by that stage and the posts can be moved around so that the remainder of the contract can be assigned to football department payments or similar. 9yrs buys you a lot of wiggle room for pushing the money around into different cracks in the system.
- Terms could be renegotiated and blame reallocated under different administrations.
