Buddy will now be remembered as a great player that played for Hawthorn. He will never be a Hawthorn Champion though. Thats reserved for players that actually care about the club, Hodgey, Mitchell, etc.

Agreed. A great player, but not a club great.

I as an opposition supporter would not begrudge a certain brown and gold team receiving a compensation pick that has 1 in it and nothing else.

I'll pen a letter to AFL HQ tomorrow.
Hope you did the same for when was poached from the mighty Catters. :)

I think it's because we (cats and now hawks) presumed that they were going to franchise clubs that weren't a threat during their premiership window and thats why very few begrudged gaz, buddy on the other hand is going to a club that can effectively win anytime over the next few years and that's a knife from a guy who ad nauseam spoke about his love for the club
This was before anybody had any inkling that Sydney was in the picture though and everybody was convinced he was headed for GWS.

Non-Hawthorn supporters have shown significantly more empathy towards the HFC than they ever did to Geelong and this is not a biased skewed perception, it is overwhelmingly so. Just take a look at the comment quoted above. Not a single neutral footy fan came on our board and share sentiments remotely similar to that. Quite the opposite in fact; we just got trolls mocking us

I hope that this isn't misinterpreted as a troll but I have a slight more respect for Franklin because his move was not solely for financial gain; he had other motivations to make the move whether you agree with it or not.

Whereas with GAJ Pickering told the Suns in no uncertain terms that it will take an unprecedented financial offer for him to sign. Pickers then successfully negotiated roughly 10 million smackaroonies for 5 years work, that's what Franklin is purported to be earning in 9. It was about the money with GAJ, no doubt about it and I really can't respect that on any level.

I put it down to the fact that Ablett elicits a more favourable opinion from neutrals, for whatever reason, than the average player.

As bitter of a pill this is to swallow, knowing that he went behind the clubs back a year ago, it helps remembering that he played his best footy for us. Was anyone else at the dome when he kicked his 100th and ran out onto the field? Honestly remembering that makes me feel a lot better about it all.

I don't care that he is gone (I think our list will be benifit over the next 5 years), I don't care that he has gone to Sydney but the fact that he approached them 12 months ago leaves a bitter taste in the mouth.

What I want to know is if he approached Sydney post the meeting with Clarkson in Vegas or prior to that?
He went to the States straight after the B&F last year and so if Pickering approached the Swans 2 weeks or so post- GF then Buddy would have been in the States. So I'm guessing it occurred post-Clarko meeting in Las Vegas ( but who knows for sure).

The good news for hawk supporters is that we have the best spoiler in gibbo, the best intercept marker in lake and a speedster in a bulked up shoey doing an apprenticeship under lake for when we meet Sydney next

That is of course only applies if it's after rd 4

We should get an idea of how the afl feel when we see there draw for next year

Why does everyone assume compensation under free agency will be pick 19 - 20 ie tier 1 first round ?All compensation is reviewed by the 'expert committee'
There is provision under the rules, if when applying the formula ( based on age and length and size of contract) the result is materially anomalous then alternative compensation can be recommended.
- if when losing a player to the second longest contract in history, and the highest$$$ in history, at age 26 the formula is applied and gives a result of compensation of draft pick 19 or so, this must surely be seen to be materially anomalous and alternative ie higher compensation offered. The formula system was never designed for a situation such as this.
The afl will not want loss of confidence in the system and the whole Sydney saga will only strengthen this case.

Or maybe the afl is just trying to weaken us, as if the boot was on the other foot there is no way they would allow Sydney such poor compensation.

I suspected that his decision was made after the Vegas incident, if the things I have heard are true there is no doubt we are better off without Franklin, if he wanted to turn his back on the club because of that then so be it.

Wouldn't surprise me if Clarkson knew about Buddy wanting to move to Sydney. Same Managers. Couldn't derail the season as he knew that the premiership would be for the taking again.
Followed him to Vegas for a chat about it and the desire to play for Sydney, got heated. End of Story. Buddy now a Swans player.

Clarkson has been planning for this moment. He's probably upset about it a little that he's going to the opposition for another tilt at a flag. We have our 11th premiership. Wait for the fireworks at our first meeting with Buddy in the Swans jumper. Clarkson will have instructions. Nothing he can do now. We MUST return to celebrating our premiership win and hope we get some goodies from the draft.

I told my four half year old Buddy isn't playing for us. He asked why.. I said he wants to play for Sydney. He said lets smash Sydney. Rioli is my favourite. Kids have a way of working through it quickly.

Can see it going to the expert committee and us getting a 2nd round pick (end of)

Excuse the ignorance but what is this Vegas incident a few people have mentioned?

God I hate Sydney absolutely robbing key players such as Franklin and Tippett , they shouldn't have extra salary for the cost of living it's pathetic. How could they have the salary cap to afford him anyway , Tippett and Franklin alone is 2 million + a year.
