The 'cost of living' issue has exploded in the media despite the AFL season being over. & I'm glad it has. It's exposed a disgusting flaw - the competition is no longer a level playing field.. it's not and the AFL needs make it or else I'm out.

Franklin can go wherever he wants - the issue here for me is that all clubs are equal. That's it.

Hope you did the same for when was poached from the mighty Catters. :)

This was before anybody had any inkling that Sydney was in the picture though and everybody was convinced he was headed for GWS.

Non-Hawthorn supporters have shown significantly more empathy towards the HFC than they ever did to Geelong and this is not a biased skewed perception, it is overwhelmingly so. Just take a look at the comment quoted above. Not a single neutral footy fan came on our board and share sentiments remotely similar to that. Quite the opposite in fact; we just got trolls mocking us

I hope that this isn't misinterpreted as a troll but I have a slight more respect for Franklin because his move was not solely for financial gain; he had other motivations to make the move whether you agree with it or not.

Whereas with GAJ Pickering told the Suns in no uncertain terms that it will take an unprecedented financial offer for him to sign. Pickers then successfully negotiated roughly 10 million smackaroonies for 5 years work, that's what Franklin is purported to be earning in 9. It was about the money with GAJ, no doubt about it and I really can't respect that on any level.

I put it down to the fact that Ablett elicits a more favourable opinion from neutrals, for whatever reason, than the average player.
I would have almost understood if it was 10m for 5 years though.. very hard to turn that down.. It's just a sum to you and me but it's a real proposition to them.

You have slight more respect for Franklin because he wanted to join the club who beat us in a GF just weeks afterwards, and 'to go up there and be with his mates.' He wants to join the Swans for about 200-300k extra a season.. meanwhile Sydney have a larger salary cap than the Hawks. They have the COLA. They already poached Tippett last year after winning the flag, HTF do they afford this?

Little Gary wants to 'challenge himself' by leaving Geelong and has been given a massive offer not many AFL players would ever refuse.

I think you'd get a different reaction now, especially from Hawthorn fans. Firstly we now have a much better understanding of your pain. Secondly we probably feel a bit more sympathetic to Geelong in general. I know I have a lot more empathy for their 2008 loss, after having suffered the loss in 2012, when we were also raging favourites. I've got a sense that at least on big footy, outright hatred for Geelong has shifted to something having a bit more of an even mix of hatred and respect. Perhaps this is due to basking in the recent glow of a prelim win over cats, and a few day old flag, and things will revert to the usual abuse and trolling next year. I hope not.

I also think we are going to be a bit more rodgered on picks than you guys were with Ablett, unless Buddy has insisted on some kind of compensation (and this still seems possible, as the 9 year deal might just be to avoid us keeping him there, it doesn't preclude a trade coming our way , although that looks a bit like wishful thinking right now). The pick rodgering might be accounting for some of the extra sympathy we are seeing. Or perhaps the neutrals see Ablett, Tippet, Franklin as things going too far, and are perhaps worried what all this means for their own clubs stars down the track. Before Tippet, it was "Oh it just Ablett, couldn't happen at our club".

There is provision under the rules, if when applying the formula ( based on age and length and size of contract) the result is materially anomalous then alternative compensation can be recommended.
- if when losing a player to the second longest contract in history, and the highest$$$ in history, at age 26 the formula is applied and gives a result of compensation of draft pick 19 or so, this must surely be seen to be materially anomalous and alternative ie higher compensation offered.
Exactly! Using that logic we should be getting the first 5 picks in the draft.

9years! Give me f'ing break. That contract is structured entirely around preventing Hawthorn from matching the contract.

Excuse the ignorance but what is this Vegas incident a few people have mentioned?

Franklin was enjoying himself in Vegas, perhaps a little too much, club was informed of this, Clarkson being in the States at the time was sent to Vegas to tell him to pull his head in, had a meeting they got very heated apparently.

Franklin wasn't happy about being confronted on his down time.

I cannot confirm whether or not he approached Sydney pre or post this but I suspect it was after.

Geez people are throwing some tantrums in here and the main board.

Yes COLA sucks and probably needs to be changed but I reckon Buddy would go anyway without the slight extra coin. Seems like he wants a change and something different.

Good luck to him! It's his life and he needs to live it. I have no doubt that he loves Hawthorn. And by god, did we all love watching him play. He can still love HAWTHORN and want to live/do something different.

Has anybody wanted to change jobs, move cities etc because they wanted a change? It's his job - everyone is holding him to a higher standard to which they would hold themselves. People are being so selfish!

I'm kinda proud of him actually. He made a decision that will be a big change for him with risks. He knew he would cop flack for it. And there is no doubt he gave his all for Hawthorn. That takes a bit of balls and guts. Good luck to him!

they shouldn't have extra salary for the cost of living it's pathetic.

You are absolutely right.
Should Adelaide have less because salary cap because the cost of living is lower?
It's absurd.

Buddy actually lives (lived?) around the corner from me and used to drive past his house regularly, seeing him and his dad from time to time. In the past 2 months or so, there has been no life whatsoever in his house. Probably should've realised earlier that this was probably an indication of the worst.

what we have is a situation where the best interests of the club aren't being considered by Buddy and his management in any way.
Agreed. Franklin says he loves the club but it is an orange juice kind of love. People say they love oranges, but what they really mean is they love what oranges do for them. They take the orange, squeeze the juice out of it, then throw it in the bin. This is how I feel Franklin has treated the club.

You hear stories of Brian Lake accepting a $200,000 pay cut just to give himself a chance of playing in a premiership. People who have a genuine love for the club are prepared to make sacrifices. Supporters make sacrifices, many giving up our hard earned to keep the club afloat back in 1996. What sacrifices does Franklin ever make? NONE!!! It's all about him.

He wants it all, and is prepared to take it all without giving a thought about what it may do to the club. I still blame that idiot Pickering for all of this. He's the one brokering the deals, all Franklin is doing is signing next to the $$$$ signs. That's all Franklin seems to understand .. what's in it for him.

Franklin, the club was around long before you came along, and will survive long after all you are is distant memory with more tattoos than brains.

If 'no binding player contract offer can be made until ... Friday 4 October 2013' and the AFL is 'the cost of living allowance is currently being reviewed by the AFL', is there a possibility that the COLA is eliminated before Buddy can sign for the swans, essentially pushing a move to GWS as Vlad would prefer?
Yes , not a bad point, the afl could intervene and potentially say , redo ya sums on basis cola ceases end of next year

Sorry for the intrusion but just wanted to post that you guys have been reamed by Buddy and the Swans, but I do truly think it will make your club stronger and even more successful moving forward. Frees up a hell of a lot of cap room too.

I also think it will cause long term and short term problems at the Swans. This will be the last big wage recruiting they will be able to do for a long time, so while it may appear to strengthen them now, down the track it will only make them weaker.

Oh and how do you think Buddy will go on the cramped SCG? Going to be alot of choking done.

Just need Luke Hodge to come out and say he will never lose to Sydney ever again.

He has been living elsewhere. This is apparently due to his address becoming public record after the speeding fine.

Really highlights his character.

Paul Chapman - Looses to Hawthorn in 2008 premierships. Vows to never loose to Hawthorn again. They atone by not loosing to Hawks for 11 straight matches.

Lance Franklin - Losses to Sydney in 2012 premiership. Approaches them, and asks if he can join.

I bet you the players are feeling just as betrayed as we are. I would be filthy, whilsts all the other players are hurting, fighting for redemption. Their so called team mate and 'best friend' is already making plans to join the team that just broke their hearts.

Buddy will now be remembered as a great player that played for Hawthorn. He will never be a Hawthorn Champion though. Thats reserved for players that actually care about the club, Hodgey, Mitchell, etc.
Well said that man!
