*I hope our recruiting staff draw a line in the sand and go after every decent young player that GWS have if we lose him to the Giants. Certainly, not done and dusted now but given the sizeable offer we can only hope he has it in his heart to remain a Hawk for life.

Gazza could have had another premiership and possibly another Brownlow if he'd stayed at the Cats. Money can't but those things. Being loved by the Suns bandwagoners wouldn't compare to the passion of Victorian fans. I don't understand chasing a slightly bigger pot of money for little chance of success. I might be odd - but it just doesn't seem worth it.
Completely agree. Had GAblett stayed at the Cats, he had the chance to end up with 4 or 5 Brownlows and Premiership medals and gone down as the best player of all time.

Cannot understand guys giving that up for a bit more cash.

Adam Treloar & Dylan Shiel would do me just fine, thank you very much!

Have been thinking for a while that the money the GWS and GCS get is a bit like monopoly money. They get a sh*t load of money to play with and there is no way established clubs no matter how financially strong they are can complete with them due to the salary cap. It won't be like this forever but the timing isn't good for clubs like ours. Can't blame Buddy fielding such offers when a Scully can make $1M per year. Even if the story isn't accurate my concern since Bud postponed talks has been that we just can't afford him given where our list is at.

If that $ value is correct then he is gone - throw in o'connor and Beale heading to Sydney and you would have to say its a done deal. If he stayed after receiving that sort of offer they should start building the statue now
Think that could be his grand plan? Hold off long enough until the really big GWS offer comes in and becomes common knowledge and then bam! Knock it back and sign with the Hawks for their original offer and elevate himself to Hawthorn legend status regardless of how he plays from then on ;):p

No Victorian club can compete no matter where there "list is at" when GWS are given $ 1mill plus $900k extra salary cap to the Victorian clubs.....THERE IS A CATCH TO ALL THIS THOUGH. The rules constantly get changed by the AFL. Veterans salaries used to be up to 2 per each club, and when they are 30 and over 10 years at the one club only half the salary is counted in the cap. Had the AFL not changed this rule we could have easily said 1 mill first 3 years 2 mill last 2 years (only half gets counted as a veteran then) with an option of a 6th year at $ 2mill....in essence we could have matched GWS and they would not have a hope in hell. We as a body of supporters should demand our clubs take action and even legal action against the AFL to scrap there communist salary cap system, for with it they keep changing the rules (eg veteran salaries and free agency) which changes the whole ball park as it suits there agenda's

Remember it is the Victorian boards that voted for these concessions, and then they allowed the AFL to change the rules re veterans salaries and free agency simultaneously...if this is the case then change the rules v 3rd party and sponsorship payments, the AFL changes to suit there franchise clubs than so should we and take them to court if they challenge or try and sanction us.

The AFL can get f***ed with there communism, dictatorship and fraudulant conflict of interests to integrity and fairness in competition. The Hawthorn board and other Vic boards should remember there first duty is to there football club and there brand....who compensates us for brand damage if he leaves? Its time the tell the AFL to get f***ed enough is enough

Well if he goes , Mark Evans has done us a service and left the compensation untouched ... Being as it may 2 first rounders are on the way if he is to go.

Still a kick in the teeth but we get some future prospects.

Mate the most compensation we can receive is 1 1strounder that will be directly after our 1st pick...unless u are referring to our 1st pick as being 1 of the 2

This is what makes me laugh when people say Ablett achieved all he could at the cats. What a load of crap, he missed out on being part of premiership winning teams after he left. You can throw in words like 'workplace' and 'business' all you like, but footballers play for the ultimate prize. Just ask any Hawk from the early eighties if they thought one flag was enough...
He possibly gave up one flag by going to Gold Coast. He may yet win another one if he hangs around for the next 3-5 years. Whats worth more?? Staying at an already successful club or helping build a club from scratch and captaining it to its first flag??

Captaining a new club to its first flag is a unique achievement, hard to say what is worth more. Irrespective of this my point was that there is still plenty to achieve by staying a one club player.

So unless someone is leaking details to the media, where exactly do they get this info?
I maybe very naïve, but I can't believe ANY club is going to leak figures or info about what they can or can't offer. What Barrett detailed was very specific wasn't it? I just loved Roughy's reaction, he just shook his head as if to say, that is bullsh1t..
Thing is that it's not just coming from Barrett.. It's coining from everywhere in the media so there must be a deal on the table and they are just waiting for buddy to sign on the dotted line.
BS that the AFL game has come to this and I'm getting sick of our game with the direction it's heading.

I hope we don;t use the money to fund a couple of aging has beens from other clubs.

Would rather grab 2 - 3 young players not wanting to renew their contracts at GWS/GCS/Melbourne and also immediately front load a few other contracts.

I'd grab James Frawley too.

For anyone that missed it.

To me the one positive that came from it, is that it seems we still have a bit of wiggle room in our offer. As it currently stand the offer to him is 4 years at $1 mil a year. If we up to 5 years at $1.1 - 1.2 mil, that might be enough to get it done.

Really it is only $300 - 400 k more then what we can probably offer. Bud also has a fair bit of income from outside sources. $500 k from Adidas, i think its like $200 k from foxtel, and I read yesterday that Nena and Pasadena current revenue is $10 mil, so you would expect it is turning a decent profit also.
