We are screwed.
An unexperienced and underdeveloped Flaps in the ruck with probably CC. This is not good. Typical, too. Fraser was BOG against Swans and looked prime for his best year to date.

Typical luck.

"Collingwood has suffered a huge setback with the start of the AFL home and away season less than a fortnight away with star ruckman Josh Fraser ruled out for up to two months with a knee injury.

Fraser had surgery on Tuesday to repair cartilage damage in his right knee with the Pies expecting him to miss between six to eight weeks.

It is the first major setback in the career of the 23-year-old, who has already played 108 matches in just five seasons since being chosen at pick one in the 1999 national draft.

But it could not have come at a worse time for the Magpies, who will also be without back-up ruckman Guy Richards due to a posterior cruciate knee strain, for at least the opening round clash against the Western Bulldogs on Easter Monday at the MCG.

With both Fraser and Richards sidelined, the Magpies are likely to be forced to use 204cm rookie David Fanning - who has only just being promoted onto the senior list - in the first ruck for the start of the season even though he is yet to even make his AFL debut.

Collingwood football operations manager Neil Balme told Sportal on Tuesday that Fraser had complained of knee soreness after Saturday's practice match win against Sydney in Newcastle.

"It turned out that he had cartilage damage," Balme said.

However Balme said the injury was not the same kind of injury to the posterior cruciate ligament caused when opposing ruckmen clash knees at centre bounces and which led to the introduction of the new ruck rules for 2005.

"There was no actual incident t"hat has caused it," Balme said of Fraser's injury.

"It's just due to wear and tear."

Fraser has missed just eight matches in his five years with the Magpies and Balme said the club was hoping Fraser's renowned durability will enable him to make a speedy recovery.

"We are saying six to eight weeks but we are hopeful he may be back sooner," Balme said.

The loss of Fraser continues the Pies' wretched pre-season with skipper Nathan Buckley yet to play at all after tearing his hamstring during the Pies' community camp in early February.

And goalsneak Alan Didak (knee) also remains sidelined while promising forward Tom Davidson is still on the comeback trail from a knee re-construction.

However the Pies are hopeful that Buckley will be available to lead the side against the Bulldogs in round one even though he will go into the season without any match practice under his belt."

I give up...........

any minute now im gonna wake up

********.

Ok, Ok, take a big deep breath. OK.

Thank god we got all 3 Clokes. Fanning and C.Cloke take the ruck. C.Cloke swaps with Rocca who rucks for 5-10 minutes a quarter. We bring in either T.Cloke or Billy Morrison to play the tall down forward.

How about Walker in the ruck?

Or, we just go small down forward, and depend on Didak (if fit), Davis, Williams (scary eh?) and Burns in the forward line.

By all reports Rocca is super fit, so he could probably work mainly as the ruckman. Buckley the new CHF?

Let's stay optimistic... This will be a great test for Fanning

Yes the loss for rogan is a big one, but our onball brigade is one of the best at getting the hard ball. Look at the yrs we made the grand final. Burns, bucks, lica. Now bucks probs wont be spending much time in the middle, but there is still Dutchy, BJ, coley all who have the potential to be hard at it midfielders. I havent seen flaps play at all, but the word is that against sydney he held his own. In light of this unfortunate news here is how i believe we should line up against the doggies, remembering its still a game we can win.

B: Clement/Wakelin/Cole
HB:Morrison/Walker/BJ
C: Lonie/Lica/Woey
HF: Taz/Rocca/Bucks
F: Davis/C2/Cara
Foll: Flaps/Dutchy/ Burns
Int: Rhyce/Maxwell/Tarks/Rowe

oh sh*t here we go again. flaps will do fine, this could be the break he needs and at the same time will put to rest any detractors he has.

pies have enough talls, although young and inexperienced but without opportunity how do they get experience?

we will be ok. bucks to ff and taz to chf when rock goes on the ball for 10mins or so.

smile guys its not even easter

Although bad news I actually think we can fill the gap.

But im not sure how long for. A rookie is ok for the first month or so before they tend to fade a bit, which is understandable.

Fanning, C Cloke, Walker, Rocca and even T. Cloke to provide a decent contest.

Straight after the Sydney match I said to all my Collingwood mates that this will be Josh's biggest year yet. This news is much harder to take than Bucks' hamstring. I guess what we have to do is do what we did best in 2002 and that is shark the opposition ruckman's taps. Although, the centre bounce tap is probably the best part of Fanning's game. This will definitely mean C2 will play. Had we been at full strength he may well have played the first game in the magoos. I just hope 6-8 weeks in conservative. He's a pretty robust player, and they're saying he just might be able to come back a bit quicker than that. Even with this set back though, we're still in a better position than we were at this stage last year. Last year we had a heap of blokes injured in the pre-season who then came back for the first round completely unfit. Then Tarrant and Rocca went down, as did Fraser. I still think the team is better equiped to handle this.

Is it just me or does happen year in year out at Collingwood? I'm a Richmond supporter so the past few years we've played you round 1 and you've had a depleted or underdone side. What is it?

Fanning should be good in the ruck, the new ruck rules are absolutely tailor made for a bloke like him.

Coming from a basketball background, the absolute essential in terms of athleticism is vertical leap, and specifically, a standing vertical leap, or one of only a step or two. He is able to get a lot higher in that short space than many other ruckmen that are used to long run-ups, like Jeff White.

And, from having seen him play a couple of times this pre-season, he seems to do pretty well in the center bounces, and he's average if not good around the ground for a man of his size.
