Fanie De Villiers..ok he never played AFL but gotta be the dumbest way to ruin your career just as u hit the big time.

Starts to take serious wickets at test level and makes headlines as a terrific swing bowler and perfect foil for the pace of Allan Donald.

Then runs his lawnmower over his foot...how the hell do u even do that ?

Never really did much after that.

Nick Malceski, while not a freak injury, his surgery was. Back playing weeks after having that artificial tendon put in his knee. Should've been gone for the year.

A bloke at my school when I was a kid suffered a serious knee injury playing competitive table tennis and required a full knee reconstruction. Never played again.

I thought the only injury you could get from table tennis was squinty eye. :D

This isnt a football or even a sport injury but it is a 'freak injury' and a bit embarrassing. When I was much younger I wanted to pop a balloon by jumping on it. Jumped on it, it slipped from underneath me and I went flying backwards breaking my collar bone. Never tried to jump on a balloon since ;)

I know a bloke who somehow broke his leg kicking the footy by himself. To this day he won't give us any specific details of what he was doing.

Michael Voss broken leg in Perth.

James Hird facial reonstruction.

Nathan Brown broken leg.

Jason Snell broken ankle.

Richard Osborne being knocked out in Sydney then fitting on the field and the ambulance driving onto the ground to get him was not nice to see.

Jeff White getting kiccked in the face by Stephen King and having his jaw wired and he was getting married not long after to.

Nathan Brown's broken leg would definitely be up there.

Beginning of the year, this bloke (we'll call him C) at my school got in a fight with another guy (P). P tried to run out of school property, but C thought he could stop him by fly kicking him. P was able to block this kick, leaving C to land awkwardly, snapping his ankle. You could the bone coming out of the skin and once C saw it he went into some sort of fit. 'Twas not a good site. :(

bollox, brad young cut off part of his spinning finger in a lawn-mowing accident.
Yanno..i can almost guess how u might be able to run over your foot with a lawnmower...almost...but your fingers ? wtf !!

There was a guy who fell off a ladder cleaning his gutters about 15+years ago from memory..Just after the AFL started i think. Busted a bone or two pretty bad but i cant even remmber the club but was a melb club i think. Someone else might remember who it was...fringe player from memory not a big name.

Pretty sure Michael Voss missed games on multiple occassions due to accidents while renovating his house.

Sliced his quad open at one stage I think, and nearly lost a finger in another.
Wanganeen almost chopped one of his toes off doing home renos... barefoot.

Didn't Mike Whitney do some sort of nerve damage while yawning and miss a couple of tests?

Wouldn't surprise me. I did nerve damage in my back sitting on my bed and bending over to tie a shoe lace. Took a good 2-3 months to get over it.

If I recall correctly, didn't Dunstall seriously injure himself sliding into a sponsor board on the side fence requiring him to later wear head protection?

It was a fractured skull, by an accicental knee to the head, just above the right eye.

But here's more from the Dunstall himself - page 111 of The Goal King - Capter 26 - Lucky to be alive.

Round 9, May 26, 1990 V Melbourne. "I cannoned into Earl Spalding's knee...... I held my head and there was a big dent there." An opposing player taunted hin and said get up you weak dog.

A Hawthorn doctor estimated the dent to be several centimetres deep with bleeding into the sinus cavity because of acute haemorrhaging. Morphine dimmed the pain but resulted in vomiting.

Dunstall's face was pulled down, the repair work completed - including a plate and removal of bone fragments- before he was stitched back up. Actually 59 staples across his skull.

Regards

Dicko
