I always remember John Barnes breaking his arm in a marking contest. Elbows should not go in that direction.
Robbie Flower I think it was or Gary Lyon broke their finger trying to tackle Andrew Bews when he was at Geelong. The player got their finger caught in the laces on Bews' lace up jumper. They were banned after that.
I thought the break was actually higher up than his elbow, he broke his humorous from memory. I remember it looking very ordinary.

Probably not a freak injury, as I can't remember the circumstances in how it happened, but Paul Kelly knocking his dislocated knee cap back in to place has stuck with me for years.
Michael Long's would have to be one of the freakiest injuries i've seen. Set shot for goal, no more than 35m-40m out, straight in front. As he is just about to kick the ball he slipped and fell over. The ball sailed through for a goal but he stayed on the ground in agony. Did his knee and had to have a full reconstruction. I was at that game and it was very surreal.

That was Darren Cresswell I think
Yup, knew I got it wrong as soon as I saw the replies to the thread. Cheers....except that it was Darren Cresswell..
Actually, if you can track Darren down these days, for a few bucks he'll probably do it again for you to refresh your memory.![]()
Patella tendon injury i beleive, he did it in the marking contest before the goal and when he kicked on the leg after it just completley lost it's structure and buckled on him. Remember this because apparantly Gary Buckenara did the same thing for the Hawks and when they asked him when he saw it on TV he knew Long had done the same injury.
Matthew Egan - a seemingly inoccuous landing results in a navicular fracture that ends his career at age 24
Sure it wasn't while playing Wii Sports?Jesse Smith tearing his hammy playing xbox...

Some of them are brutal
If I recall correctly, didn't Dunstall seriously injure himself sliding into a sponsor board on the side fence requiring him to later wear head protection?
I think you might be refering to the game where Dunstall took a mark and whilst on the ground, was accidently kneed in the head by Earl (the duke) Spalding out at Waverly when Earl was playing for Melbourne.
Sickening when you see bungholes forehead afterwards.
