Freak injuries

Robbie Flower I think it was or Gary Lyon broke their finger trying to tackle Andrew Bews when he was at Geelong. The player got their finger caught in the laces on Bews' lace up jumper. They were banned after that.

Matty lloyd missed a lot of footy doing the same thing. Obviously without the lace in the jumper part.

I thought the break was actually higher up than his elbow, he broke his humorous from memory. I remember it looking very ordinary.

Yeah I thought it was too. Pretty much right in the middle.

I remember him being pretty funny describing it a day or two later, saying he thought "Shit John, this could be mark of the year", or something close to that.

Yeah, pretty sickening one to look at. Almost up there with Brown and Snell IMO.

If anyone has footage, please upload to youtube. :)

I almost passed out when i saw Ted Richards coughing up blood this year when he got crunched by Fevalenko.
I remember when Jamie Lawson had his leg smashed against Richmond (i think) at the MCG in about 1993-94? and never played footy again, i reckon he would have been a very good player too!

Probably not a freak injury, as I can't remember the circumstances in how it happened, but Paul Kelly knocking his dislocated knee cap back in to place has stuck with me for years.

That was Darren Cresswell I think

Michael Long's would have to be one of the freakiest injuries i've seen. Set shot for goal, no more than 35m-40m out, straight in front. As he is just about to kick the ball he slipped and fell over. The ball sailed through for a goal but he stayed on the ground in agony. Did his knee and had to have a full reconstruction. I was at that game and it was very surreal.

Patella tendon injury i beleive, he did it in the marking contest before the goal and when he kicked on the leg after it just completley lost it's structure and buckled on him. Remember this because apparantly Gary Buckenara did the same thing for the Hawks and when they asked him when he saw it on TV he knew Long had done the same injury.

...except that it was Darren Cresswell..

Actually, if you can track Darren down these days, for a few bucks he'll probably do it again for you to refresh your memory. :thumbsu:

Difference is that Buckenara had already injured his knee and he knew it. He still chose to take his kick with the busted knee, he kicked it and went down flat on his arse and that was the end of the day and season for him.

Jesse Smith tearing his hammy playing xbox...
Sure it wasn't while playing Wii Sports?:D

On the OP, it is not an injury, more like loss of life. However, Troy Broadbridge losing his life in the Tsunami tragedy was a freak accident that not only ended his career, but life too.

all that and none of the below:

that is a freak injury as much as hird's was in the afl.

for those who don't know it's a picture of dizzy gillespie and steve waugh colliding in sri lanka in 1999. Steve waugh broke his nose, gillespie his leg.

the video is as sickening as hird or snell.

btw read this a while ago: http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2003/06/26/1056449365796.html

it's about snell and his injury.

It doesn't look like much, but getting hit in the right spot can end a career like that.

Compare that too..

Yeah that Caracella one was bloody bad.

Made me think of the injury to Richard Osbourne where he went into convulsions on the field.

I thought he was going to die when i saw it.

If I recall correctly, didn't Dunstall seriously injure himself sliding into a sponsor board on the side fence requiring him to later wear head protection?

I think you might be refering to the game where Dunstall took a mark and whilst on the ground, was accidently kneed in the head by Earl (the duke) Spalding out at Waverly when Earl was playing for Melbourne.
Sickening when you see bungholes forehead afterwards.

Yep spot on. It was Richo that seriously injured himself on the fence. And Bazza Hall in recent times. ;)
