Just wondering if the AFL have put in rules that stop teams from abusing the compensation from losing a player like we saw with Jared Brennan going to the Gold Coast.

For example could St Kilda make a deal with Freo whereby St Kilda say they will not match the offer that Freo give to Goddard if Freo trade their first pick for a fourth round pick (just a random example). Therefore St Kilda receive Freo's first rounder plus the likely first rounder they will receive as compensation from the AFL.

This way Freo get Goddard cheaply trade wise, St Kilda get fairer compensation and no one really loses.

It seems the way Goddard and St Kilda are openly dealing with each other, that both would be willing to sort out something like this.

Don't all trades have to be relatively equal to be approved by the AFL? I can't see them letting a 1st round pick being traded for a 4th round pick.

Don't really see this a loophole. If both sides agree to this as a side trade then whats the problem? However, if Freo had more cap space than the Saints, then it would probably just be in their interested to offer slightly more and keep their 1st rounder. I think I've read that right?

In the 2010 trade week, Gold Coast traded Pick 5, 25, 27 and Rohan Bewick to Brisbane in exchange for Pick 10, 48 and a end of first round compensation Pick. This lopsided trade was accepted by Gold Coast so that Brisbane would be fine with letting Brennan go as the second un-contracted player to the Gold Coast. Then Brisbane also received a compensation pick for Brennan from the AFL.

It's a loophole in the sense that the team losing the player gets compensation from the team that gains the player and then also from the AFL, which most people deem unfair. I understand that Freo could offer 1m or so and eliminate having to give any compensation, but from what I'm hearing no team is really willing to give that much for Goddard and St Kilda seem willing to lose Goddard if they got something decent in return. So, say Freo offer Goddard 600,000, St Kilda could probably match that, and would, unless Freo offer St Kilda something on top so that St Kilda feel they are receiving good compensation for Goddard and therefore willing to let him go and start the rebuild.

Both sides win, I still don't see the problem. It may be a loophole, but if anything, you would think the AFL would be encouraging this kind of dealling. Keeps things even(ish).
I guess it might not be, but I'm pretty sure people were complaining about it when it happened with Brennan in 2010 and calling it unfair or whatever.

At least one player needs to be involved in the actual trade deal itself. AFL trading rules strictly forbid clubs trading just draft picks between themselves

No that's not correct - it used to be but they changed it a couple of years ago.

You can see a few examples in the trade table here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_AFL_Draft

#26 Geelong and GC; #27 Adelaide and GC for example

Not anymore - the Bulldogs traded picks with WCE a couple of years ago that was a win/win for both clubs. Some clubs have a history of trading fairly with each other.
