Is someone like tuck not entitled to free agency?

I am not totally sure of the rules. Hopefully someone can clarify this (Typical of the AFL things are always more unclear than it first appears). But if Tuck is not top 10 in our payments then he isn't available for free agency I think. I'm not sure if there is a difference between the total free agency and the limited version. Anyway, your Tuck like player becomes a trade pawn. I reckon you wouldn't have to offer much to get someone like him in general. I think he is worth more to us now than what would be offered in a trade. As a free agent we might get a 3/4 rounder I guess.
If you can freely go for that level of player then they would get more $ and the other club would get a fairly unimpressive pick. This would allow clubs like us (with cap room) to add a lot of depth quickly for little cost. The other clubs get hollowed out fast with little chance of getting quality in the draft. I dunno, I'd like to understand it all a bit better.

This is incorrect.

Free Agency was created to make it EASIER for fringe players to switch clubs. If you have been at your club for 8 years and AREN'T in your top 10 paid players, you become an UNRESTRICTED Free Agent (as opposed to Restricted if in the top 10). If you are in the top 10 paid players, you don't become an unrestricted Free Agent until 10 Years of service with the same club.

There are exceptions/conditions but I don't want to muddy the waters by trying to explain those but an example is Brendan Goddard who will be a restricted Free Agent at the end of the year even though he has been at the Saints for 10 years.

A de-listed player has even greater flexibility to get to the club of his choice (think Adam Maric)

This link explains it pretty well:

I can't remember if his name has been brought up, and i know he's a total dickbag, but could a guy like Colin Sylvia do with a change of clubs?
Good call CB. This bloke would be a great pickup but I think he's contracted for next year?? I'm not sure we'll target anyone big this year anyway. I think it will be better to hold our fire until the end of next year and maybe just add a couple more Grigg/Houli/Morris types.

A goalkicker who can play midfield? I would take Sylvia for sure and I think the worst of his off field problems are behind him.

Travis Boak? Like c'mon we could easily lure him back to victoria, to play alongside cotch dusty lids and foley would be appealing to any rival midfielder, he's 23 and port are going nowhere which would also work in our favor

Boak would be a good get.

One would think though, that if he were to leave Port that he would head to Geelong to move closer to home to be with his mother and sister (they live in Barwon Heads).

I'll never forget seeing him at Melbourne Airport the night after he was drafted by Port (in 2006) and seeing him cry as he said goodbye to his mother (his father died earlier that year IIRC) ... was emotional stuff.

Still has off-field baggage/issues from what I have heard.

I live in Barwon Heads. It's not some remote outpost you know? It's an hour and a quarter drive into the city.

I know where Barwon Heads is.

My point is he was close to his mother after the death of his father, and as such, might want to return to be closer to her on a more constant basis.

Then again, he's been living in Adelaide, so perhaps he won't.

We Must find a key forward when free agency comes in

After last nights game against the bombers , the 1 glaring deficiency we have is an effective CHF.

You can argue until the cows come home , but Vickery is not the answer , nor is Derrickx , Miller , or Post . Elton has all the talent in the world , but is a couple of years away as far as physical development goes, and i just dont think that Griffiths will make it due to the fact that he cant more than 2 games together without falling to pieces with his fragile body.

The club postures about being ready for free agency, and about having a war chest to go out and being aggressive , well i hope that Blair Hartley and his crew get it right , because i reckon we are only going to get 1 decent shot at topping up the list through the free agency window.

Watching last nights game , and taking into consideration that Essendon are a top 4 team , our forward line is almost dysfunctional, and if the club can address this , then maybe we can start thinking about september just like Essendon , Carlton, Sydney, Collingwood and West Coast. Our team can be every bit at good as these teams , if not better.

Not sure about only 1 chance, how come, is it only on for 12 months:rolleyes:...Id prefer to look at some value in HFF types in Pettard, knights and there would be others out there..the Bullies skinny fella Grant perhaps

we have 3 picks inside Top 30...we should nail a quality tall ...the pressure is on the Development coaches for one of elton, Griff , vickers or Post to really come on

It's what surprises me why we didn't have a crack at Cloke. Not saying he would come but we apparently have a bit of coin and having him at CHF would make us a top 8 certainty given the amount of time we get it into our forward line this year.

Merrett would be a good option. Great talent and the Lions aren't going anywhere fast. Good grab and can play both ends of the ground.

His game would go up a gear in a more competitive team

Thanks johnno, the explanation I saw must have only talked of the top 10 and so made it sound like the others weren't eligible. This looks good for us. We can add depth without having to trade. Look for the underloved players and get them for free(ish)

Yeah just wrote his car off in December. Can play footy though so would be open to bringing in Sylvia or Moloney....or both?

Cotchin, Deledio, Martin, Foley, Tuck, Grigg, Conca, Sylvia/Moloney has some serious depth.

Is he out of contract? Out of all the free agents merrett fills our needs the most and would b a realistic get.

Neither of these blokes would fit in at our club IMO - Massive tossers. Do not want at any cost despite there ability. I was open to it momentarily but common sense prevailed.

No probs. Had a bit of trouble getting my head around it initially too.

anyone still keen on goddard?

seems well down on form.
Posted this on another footy forum but it applies to this question.

In the off season, I was adamant that we chase a big name (Goddard being my number 1). As the season has progressed, my opinion has changed quite dramatically.

It has become apparent to me that our top end talent is (or will be) as good as pretty much anyone (possibly excluding GWS + GC). It has become equally apparent to me, that our bottom end talent drops away pretty quickly after about player 18 or so. If we start copping the same number of injuries as Collingwood or Essendon, we would be in a lot of strife.

I will take 3 good role players with further development in them & who suit our needs (ie Grigg/Houli/Morris) over 1 Travis Cloke/Goddard. The wages of those 3 combined would be close to what Cloke would command at the end of the year. Let Melbourne pay that. Their run of flag-free years will continue unabated if they do.

We are finally developing our own players as well developing players who join us from other clubs. Now isn't the time for impatience and open cheque books.
