I'd laugh if Richmond spent up big on a 28yo Merrett and 30yo Jamar.
It'd be a hilarious return to the 'Tigers of old', after a few years of what's looked like pretty canny recruiting, particularly retreads/older/mature guys.

(I'm sure they're not going to, btw. The way forward is not to spend lots and lots of money on guys with 1-2 years left.)

I would hope we wouldn't blow the bank account on those two.

Jamar would buy time as that second ruck option until ours developed.

Merrett might be a risk but could be worth it as he addresses a current need I wouldn't pay to much though.

I'm sure the scouts are looking closely at sides that played finals over the last 3 or 4 years for players that aren't getting a game and can be developed (Maric/Houli/Grigg).

We are proving time and again in the last couple of years that we are far from the 'Tigers of old' when it comes to decision making off the field.

I'm confident that will continue but the next 2 draft/trade periods are massive for us. Get them right and we'll contend for a flag. Get them wrong and the ferrals will rise again (most likely including me).

Jamar's never done anything as a #2 ruck. Neither's Maric.
It'd be a waste to take Jamar and jam him into the 22 as a forward/ruckman, and Maric's form would undoubtedly take a hit if he got his minutes chopped.
You need a second banana - a legitimate part-timer!
Two first bananas rarely works. Basically you need Vickery to find form.

Have a quick look at Brisbane's list. Not a lot of spine options, are there?
To give up one of their few established bigmen would need an absolutely mammoth trade.
It'd make sense for the Pies or Hawks, who could give away picks & fringe players - would make no sense at all for a young side like Richmond.

Merrett is a free agent. Why would we trade for him?

I rate Merrett extremely highly but there is absolutely no chance the club will get or even go after him... As a 25yo then he would be the biggest free agent going around. as a 28yo he is not an option for any club not in immediate flag contention.

Love him but do not want.

Its possible he could very much put us in immediate contention.

I'd be really pissed if the RFC stopped taking the longer term view. In 2-3 years we will contend for 3-5 years. So we need guys that will be around for 5-8 years. A 25 year old, youngest we could possibly get, meets the minimum requirment, but only just. In 2 years we will be primed and a big catch would possibly push us right into the top line. Right now a good solid B grade 25 year old mid would be awesome. Getting someone that would be gone when we are contenders just seems silly to me. Basically, we shouldn't go big time for anyone older than Lids. Only my opinion, but it makes sense to me.

And me :thumbsu:

On Merrett, and any other big name player, people seem to be ignoring the fact that these types of players very rarely move clubs. Merrett is in the leadership group at Brisbane, is no doubt well paid, and is a local from SE QLD, so you can't even use the old "surely he'd want to come home" line... As much as the Lions are struggling on the field, if it were me, you'd have to double my salary to make me leave all that behind, not to mention the nice warm Brissie weather ;)

IMO, it will be the second tier players, those starved of opportunity, or money at their current clubs, who will be most likely to utilise free agency. Think Tuck, Foley etc, rather than Newman, Deledio types. That's why I'm a little nervous that Foley remains unsigned...
