Free Agents 2021

Josh Kelly will be the one everyone throws the kitchen sink at
He's got a deal for $1.5m a year if he stays - he's only a free agent if he opts out. That seems unimaginable.

We've had plenty of examples of player who hung around that long, while playing minimal numbers of games - CEY springs quickly to mind. Mitch Grigg wouldn't have been too far off earning FA by the time they finally sent him back to the SANFL where he belongs.
Mitch Grigg was 23 when he was delisted.

He was another one I was thinking of. We've had a few over the years.

Sam Shaw is another - drafted in 2009, played 34 games in 7 years, before retiring in 2016. I won't count 2017, when he was an inactive member of our rookie list, in order to make him party to the retired player sections of the latest AFLPA agreement.

James Sellar was on the list for 5 years, for 31 games.

Shaun McKernan - 6 years, 34 games.

Brodie Martin is a true standout though - drafted in 2007, he was still polluting our list in 2015. That's 8 years of persistent mediocrity, for a total of 38 games.

I'd keep Matt and Laird. Currently we have too many unproven players to build around one player (Matt or Laird).
Prefer to have Smith, Laird and Matt Crouch as the senior guys we have for 3 to 4 years whilst be progress towards being a top 4 side again.

Didn't realise Kelly (ours) was up to FA now. O well, mightnt be the worst, if he goes to Collingwood and gets a CEY like contract (might even get better) hopefully we get a mid 30's pick for that, especially considering all collingwood have is pick 30 and 38 and there's prolly no way they give up 30.

Collingwood are unlikely to be offering him that kind of contract, given their well documented salary cap problems. Remember the fire sale they held during trade week? I don't believe that was the end of the matter for them.

Collingwood has Maynard, so its hard to see any reasons for them to get Kelly unless he's getting moved on due to salary cap issues (and Kelly represents a cheaper option).
