"The AFL is understood to have been concerned that if it continued to allow players the ability to go 'third man up' the role of the ruckman would be under threat."

What?

It's about diversity :rainbow:

"Eliminating the 'third man up' at ruck contests will support the recruitment of tall players and ensure our game continues to be played at the elite level by players of various sizes and differing abilities," Evans said.

What a disgrace if goals like this are denied now. One of the great goals of all time.

Interesting that the photo used in one of todays papers used to illustrate what the AFl is on about is of Joel S with a Hawks arm over his shoulder. Joel is leaning down and across but if the tackle had been applied correctly eg around the middle Joel would have to have been on his knees for the arm to slide up.
This has been one of the great cons of all times in VFL/AFL history and has been a beat up by commentators who just mimic the last call and so it becomes fact. It isn't.

It's simply going to shift the balance
from
too many high contact frees incorrectly paid
to
too many high contact frees incorrectly not paid.

I can see this new interpretation lasting three or so rounds then it'll go back to the old one expect on a few random calls that have everyone pulling their hair out.

The TAC cup has gotten rid of the 2nd chance for top 4 teams in the finals. I'd love to see the same thing happen at AFL level.

The KISS theory has been well and truly obliterated by the rules of the game comittee. It's becoming embarrassing to follow our great game.

Traditional rules:
You can't throw the ball. The fist has to hit the ball
You can't push in the back
You can't hit above the shoulders or below the knees.
SIMPLE.

Now we have a team who has won the flag by shuffling the ball from a contest.
A weak tackle will be rewarded.
Umpires saying players deliberately kick it out when the intention is clearly to kick into space so a team mate can run on to it.
And only 2 players can go for the ball in a 360 degree game.
ABSOLUTE CRAP.

Mark Evans will soon have the players wearing positions pinned to their guernsey and divide the field into 3. Stop paying these people.

Wish they'd ensure umpires were able to interpret the current rules correctly before introducing new ones.
There's the problem they have to interpret every thing because the rules are so convoluted instead of just enforcing a set of basic rules, for starters just pay a free kick if the ball goes out of bounce without being touched and be done with it.
Rushed behind, pay the point and ball up on the goal line no kick in,solved.
