The BIGGEST rivalry in the 50s/60s was Collingwood ( Mannix / Labor ) and Melbourne ( Old School Tie / WASP / Liberal ). It certainly reflected the times. Clubs like Carlton, Richmond, Hawthorn etc weren't in the picture because they were krap at that stage.

The whole scene changed when Barassi jumped ship and Norm Smith got sacked.

Traditional rivals such as Fitzroy and Collingwood were about inner city tribalism. On match day in Clifton Hill, the Pies would be on one side of the street and the Roys on the other walking down to the ground. Word was passed around as to the result early so that residents could batten down pending the return of the fans.

Essendon was way too middle class / Methodist for that sort of behavior.
