I don't think anyone mentioned her race.That has nothing to do with it.
We didn't get all this crap media attention when Jane Flemming,Sarah Fitzgerald or Melinda Gainsford-Taylor retired.They were just as good,or even better than "Our" Cathy.

Jane Flemming better then Freeman? Flemming was a multiple gold medal winner at Commonwealth games but never was up to standard at the Olympics or World Championships. Freeman won two world 400m titles as well as the Sydney event

Wrong JUB JUB, wagstaff & frodo both mentioned her race, also I am betting, the reason most of the people who have posted here about her in a negative way, did so because she is an Aboriginal.

People have said that it is only because she is an Aboriginal she gets special treatment, probably true, but I would say that the reason she has a lot of detractors, is the very same reason.

I really hope that we never hear or see her again. Most overhyped athlete we have ever produced. She won a very weak 400m in 2000 and you would swear that it was the only medal we won.

I know my mate frodo very well, he wasn't speaking tongue in cheek, he was not happy with the Aboriginal flag being displayed, mind you, most people forget, she also carried the Aussie flag along with the Aboriginal flag.

Yesterday the Herald Sun Online had a 'Your Tribute to Cathy' section. The problem was only about 50% were what you would regard a tribute. The others contained a lot of what's been mentioned here - 'overhyped', 'won in a poor field', 'too much publicity', 'not our greatest ever', 'Cuthbert and others better'.

Today the link is missing - gone - even though other similar online feedback to issues earlier in the week are still there.

Apparently you're not allowed to give anything but praise. The Age have done similar.

Which leads me to my point. The hype the media have decided to attach to 'our Cathy's' retirement may wind up undermining her popularity.

She deserves to be remembered as one of the greats, as does anyone who wins Olympic Gold on the track.

You can't separate her from her race (Aboriginality that is, not the 400m!), unfortunately, since it was because of her Aboriginality that she received so much media attention. And because she received so much media attention, a lot of people don't like her. Just remember it's not her fault they wouldn't write about anyone else.

I can't see her getting far in sports commentary or politics, so let's hope she finds something else fulfilling to focus her life on.

It's already been said, but fair dinkum - she is the single most over-rated athlete in HISTORY.

She won one Olympic Gold Medal - at her home Olympics - with no competition whatsoever. Let's not forget her PB is a good 2 seconds behind that of World Record holder Mary-Jo Perec.

Imagine for a second, if the English in 20 years time have an Olympic Gold medallist in the 1500m freestyle who can't get within 10 seconds of Grant Hackett's World Record, yet crap on like he's some kind of god? We'd laugh our bloody heads off.

Thank god an embarassing period of bias and jingoism in Australian sport can be put to bed.
