31 players all up. Both clubs use the same ground. Some oddities (Graham's horrific knee injury had nothing to do with Freo oval), but a lot of injuries all the same.

Coincidence or something more?

Damn I didn't know that running on such a hard ground could do that to your elbow or arm!

Yeah, it is too much of a coincidence and I have heard that Freo are unhappy with the ground and want it repaired.

For sure Brades, although the number of knee injuries there are shocking. I know most probably happened in games, but the debate has been about overtraining and fatigue being a root cause. Quite a few long term foot injuries as well, a pattern we've had for a while.

It was a pretty dry summer in Perth, so may be the track was extra hard. Who knows? Is the oval up to scratch?

Harves was asked this question on monday on 6pr. Apparently they had already thought of that and have every ground that they train on regularly tested. They seem to be up to scratch.
I believe our injury management is the real issue.

I was down at FREO oval in late July and had a close inspection.Didn't look up to scratch to me.Uneven & looked very slippery underfoot.Compare that to subi, chalk & cheese.Freo oval :thumbsd:

Freo oval has a **** surface. I'm sure some of the knee/leg injuries would have had a hard time recovering properly down at Freo oval

Not saying the surface caused the injuries, just using the ground as rehab would suck (try running with a strapped ankle on a footpath/soft grass/hard turf/cricket wicket)

I've tried all of the above and there is a difference in how you pull up afterwards

Still need better management - but when there is no mid-season draft/trade period and you have 1/3 of your list out injured, another 1/3 underdone and the other 1/3 low on confidence there is not much that can be done

A few of the injuries have happened there too. Mzungu's knee. Morabito's knee. All the preseason injuries (aside from Ibbotson) happened at that ground.

If it was Etihad there's be calls for an inquiry. I think it needs looking at.

Actually, a hard ground's greatest danger is in the way it causes extra bone breaks, especially head/shoulder/upper body bones, due to the extra damage on impact with the turf. NSW suburban rugby clubs had huge issues during the recent (2009-10) drought, and a number of the schools and town councils have faced damages payouts from rugby union injuries caused on cricket pitch areas of dual use grounds that weren't watered properly. An overly hard, over-used or poorly maintained ground will cause a wide range of injuries, not just lower leg and foot inuries. Seriously.

Fremantle Oval is on a sacred Indian burial site.

Oh, so that's where the Oswals went?

:p

Yep.

Up here when you start playing in the late dry and build up, you'll see a couple of shoulders and arms done each week. Just from the hardness of the surface - I've never played on harder surfaces.

And there is an unwritten rule about being very strict with tackling interpretations until the rains come and the ovals soften up, because of it.

I'd imagine Freo oval with a dry period has a similar profile - limestone base just like the gravel bases here, which drain quickly, and in the dry just don't seem to react to any amount of water at all.

sure its a long way off ,but with the new stadium in the pipeline is there any chance we will be able to establish a second training base there?
it would be interesting to know wether the club is talking to the wafc about the possibillity

Surely the ground gets the same level of water each week through summer regardless of rainfall?

The firmness of the ground would be determined by penetrometer and watered accordingly.
