I could point out the obvious positives in Jackson, Serong, Brayshaw, Clark Treacy and Ryan.

But I must say Wagner has surprised me and is becoming one of my favourites down back whilst Chapman is quietly developing into a reliable playmaker.

I still think I’d rather have Aish or Walker in the side over Worner but we have a real solid mix down back at the moment.
Worner was excellent tonight bar one scrubber kick. His body work, fearless attack on the ball and run place him well ahead of Aish. It’s probably a toss up with Walker but I would rather run out alongside Worner, he is harder than a cats head.

I find it funny that although MJ has played 50 games and his decision making, awareness and disposal are horrific he gets a pass meanwhile Ras who has played 10 full games in that same period is written off completely. I'm not taking sides because ultimately I want them BOTH to improve and be good players for us. Just pointing out the double standards when judging them.

Weird game and there’s plenty I could pick apart but I’m going to look at the positives.

5 wins in a row, season back on track, winning the games we need to be winning and even though we were far from our best tonight we still won by 41. As the year goes on we’ll get important players back in and who knows what can happen from there.

Serong is a beast and Jackson gets better by the week.

10 day break to recoup for the Saints, hopefully the boys have had this one marked down on the calendar as redemption day.

Worner has been a revelation. Tough as nails and his confidence is growing every week.

Solid win without being great. JLo is still the coaching equivalent of a Banfield for me, in that he doesn't have the credits on the board to weather another bad patch, but I'm happy to give him the benefit of the doubt while we're winning.

Random thoughts:

- Speaking of Banfield. So many catastrophic errors tonight. I thought JLo had finally seen that when he dropped him but we're back to the same old shit now. I have no sympathy for JLo if he loses his job if he keeps selecting the same players who keep making match losing mistakes. We won't always be playing such a bad team that lets us off those mistakes

- And the flip side of that coin - I will die on the hill that not selecting Wombat is a coach killing mistake. Who f**king cares that he doesn't play the exact role of Switta? Good coaches maximise their resources and you will never convince me that the Wombat isn't in our best 22.

- Fyfe is sadly past it, he needs to be told he's a super sub or nothing. I fear the club thinks he will 'regain form' but he looks every bit like father time has caught up. I still rate him as a super sub once the game slows down though

- I still have a lot of time for MJ. I still think he displays a lot of AFL qualities (witness his roving off the rucks tonight) and I think his (tbf glaring) weaknesses of taking too long to dispose of the ball are the sort of weaknesses that will improve with more experience at AFL level

- Drapes looks completely devoid of confidence atm. I love him and think he'll be a player eventually, but he's one of the rare occasions when I agree that sending him back a level is probably beneficial. When he gets the ball atm he looks like he just want to give it off to the easiest, most risk free option

- In contrast, I'll never agree that Amiss needs to be sent back to WAFL. Yes he struggles to get many touches, but when he does get the ball he shows the sort of quality and creativity that belongs at AFL level. The struggles he's going through need to be worked out at this level, and the team need to get better at recognising and rewarding his leads.

- Reid is probably our classiest player already, and we're going to be even better once he graduates to the midfield. I think he'll be hard to tag too because he doesn't rely on teammates being open, he has this knack of instantly releasing it into space to their advantage

- Meanwhile Sharp is the anti Reid. Absolutely zero class or quality. Just a blunt athletic weapon to run up and down the wing. We looked so much better with Drizzy back on a wing tonight. He's not perfect with his kicking but he's a massive improvement on Sharp.

- Jackson is such a goalkicking weapon that it's hard to see how a MJ/Darcy combo wouldn't be a unique point of difference for us going forward if Darcy can regain the form we think he's capable of
Agree with everything you have said. With Fyfe I’d give him one more game to see if he improves. Below his knees is where he struggles. Given his hamstring issues I’m in agreeance with you it will likely be more often as sub. I actually said that should be his role pre-season.

Erasmus after a very scratchy first quarter played ok. Getting better at flicking out the quick handpass. Needs to work on holding his tackles.

Banfield was full of errors tonight. Dropping a handball from Ras. Switch kicks where he hung the ball out. Having Walker back would be an upgrade. I’d move him to the sub and then out for Walker when we play Sydney.

Have to agree, Brodie would offer more than this version of Fyfe.
The idea of Fyfe being some secret weapon in a deep finals push was a bit of romanticism that many of us indulged in but the sad reality is he's hit the wall. Hard to accept but understandable when you've used your body as a battering ram for 15 years and suffered as many injuries as he has. I think he just has to embrace a mentorship and "break glass in case of emergency" role for the rest of his time at Freo. sad way for a legend to go out.

I didn't go into this 'fight' with a favourite but on available evidence I really don't understand how anyone could have Erasmus ahead of MJ atm. MJ consistently gets more of the ball and he seems better at roving the ball off the ruckman when he's put in at stoppages (which is supposed to be Erasmus' specialty?).

Yes he has pretty a pretty glaring weakness atm in that he's too slow to dispose of the ball, but that seems like the sort of weakness that can improve with good coaching and more exposure at the higher level.

Fyfe has had over 30 surgeries in his career. His legs are clearly gone. It's sad to see a former champion reduced to a shell of his former self. Sub only, and then pass the baton onto Erasmus by the end of the year, mate.

Happy with the win but we will need to find another gear against the better teams. If we play that chip the football around style against Hawthorn we will get crucified.

Huge expectations for a short break?

As for Fyfe, he’s still finding his feet again - we underestimate his leadership

Our cheer squad has to be the most underwhelming in the competition

Some people will never be happy…

I would get behind sub Fyfe. How many
teams subs have an actual impact? Not many. But look at how Fyfe came in late in the last couple of games, draws contact immediately and releases teammates into space. There’s a unique value in that we can use.

Best 22 though? Not so sure
We can’t just have kids out there and it was his first full game - so lucky to still have him 😊

Im keen to see what the rating points for Jackson was that game. Absolutely going to be the highest for a Freo player this year and I wonder if it beats Holmes effort last week
36 Rating Points according to AFL stats centre. Second highest recorded rating overall from any player for the year, only behind Holmes’ 36.5 last week.
