After having our arses handed to us last week by the form team of the competition, we face another form team, probably third behind the Cats, in Essendon. The Bombers are playing with rare verve and panache similar to their coach's last team, the aforementioned pussies.
The bombers are without Chappy and Fletcher, but can Freo capitalise on this with our deficiencies in the midfield? Sorely missing our star in-and-under players Fyfe and Barlow, who as well as being brilliant outside players, also provide the defensive assistance up the ground for the back six to be as dominant as they have been until last week. The returns of Dawson and Clancee will help shore up the defence, and with 39 touches for the latter with Peel last week, hopefully some much needed possession.
Without Fletcher out and on a warm day, including Taberner in the forward line as a CHF may prove handy, with his ariel ability and enormous tank. Simpson looks like he will play after missing the game for Peel yesterday. Most Freo fans will be wondering how he'll handle the pressure but there's also excited anticipation for what he can bring. Zaarke's return provides more than useful help in the ruck. He also is an electric athletic type who can cause trouble in the air and on the ground.
The biggest question for Freo fans before the game will be how our patchwork midfield hold up against the Dons's first rate one.
Should team selections stay as they are, a combination of our tall ins, defensive reinforcements and the weather, and as I'm pathologically disinclined to tip agains the Dockers, I'm predicting a draw. Our second and RTB's fifth as coach, I think.
