With him in the team the umpires would have been coached to watch for Crowley infringing, which keeps their mind on watching Freo players infringe in general. There are so many incidents in games which could potentially be frees but aren't called as such, it depends on umpire's perception for them to be called as such.
Also the more defensive a team is, the more likely you will give away free kicks, Freo last year had many games where we had less control of the ball but relied on our backline to win it back and counter attack. But this means more chances for Freo players to infringe. This year we have been more attacking and asserting dominance on games which we weren't doing even in 2013. Umpiring hasn't really changed, we've just been putting ourselves in less positions for umpiring to go against us.
