Great effort last night. The important thing to remember is essendon came to play. They had great pressure/intensity early and our ability to absorb and counter punch was sensational. Our backs structure was awesome all night but especially early with essendons inside 50s.
A pearce I thought was fantastic. Head over the ball, a few grabs and great body work with good skills under the pump. Reads the ball well-we have found a good one here.
Ballas and mayne were important without starring. The chasing out of our fifty was phenomenal.
Pav, as ross said is an amazing captain.

Walters is being too flashy and must go back to basics before his head explodes. He was ok last night and I love the guy but does some silly things.
D pearce is playing well when hill is tagged but he makes some horrible decisions that border on embarrassing. We need to be able to trust and rely on him but that is at least a few weeks away.
Taberner could have exploded last night. Great leading patterns but dropped a few he should of taken against a sound one on one defender. Put it down to the dew.
C pearce best 22 by a country mile. Missed him and ibbo in September 13.
Finally, sorry nick suban your time is up. Too many fumbles and shanks and too many good players lining up at peel. I strongly believe blakely, muz, grey and sherro could play his role better. Love his endeavour so much and we need him in our squad but def not nest 22 atm.

I found their work on Fyfe appalling. The goal/shot Pav got from the Fyfe clearance was a case in point.
Zaharakis was on Fyfe's side of the circle. He's not a contested beast at the best of times. He started 1-2 meters away from Fyfe. The ball gets bounced and Zaharakis moves FURTHER away giving Fyfe a clear paddock ti run into. Sandi then knocks it down his throat.
Bemusing to say the least.
Thought the made a mistake running Heppell with him too

Impressed with Alex Pearce. The pleasing part for me was the use of his body in marking contests often the last think inexperienced key positions develop. Mind you easier moving Joe Daniher under the ball than Hawkins etc but still.

Going sideways is what happens when: 1) you don't trust the forwards. 2) the opposition defenders clog the corridor and force you wide.

Both were on show. They don't trust Daniher or Carlisle enough and we engineer an extra man where the ball SHOULD go.
They're in a bad when when they automatically do it without even considering the three open players they have in the middle though. Lol.

Well, having watched the replay now I have to say I think we played pretty bad actually. Quite fumbly and lots of turnovers. Actually impressive how we managed to still be so dominant for 3 quarters (well obviously Essendon were still worse). But most players had disappointing games for me. Pav was good, Clarke showed a few great things and Clancee had one of his best games. Most others can to alot better. Well, and I loved A.Pearce's debut. Looked at home, contested well, made good decisions under pressure and got a resonable amount of ball for a fullback. Fitting final comment: Good teams still win when playing badly.

PS And I really dislike those bleached looking away jumpers worn by some teams...

If the Bummers played like they did in the last, in the third, we'd be 5-1.

Happy we won, but disappointed with the second half.

How do you figure?

An untested hypothetical is not fact.

Too many variables to determine what would happen.

Although I do agree with your sentiment - you have to be very careful when attempting to "control a game through possession" and "wind down the clock".

It is pure soccer/basketball tactics.

Twas quite wet

He is now. He wasn't previously. He's surpassed Mzungu because he can tackle. Plays a similar style of game in terms of kicking ability. He's a better mark and contested player, probably doesn't have the run all day capability. But he's very handy at the moment.

I think the only real blemish was the decision making at times in a dominant display.

I really think Sandilands up forward is a really good target, provided the kick coming in hasnt been held up for 20 seconds so the defence can regroup. A few passes instead of shots (fyfe) and a few shots instead of passes (Pearce) but its just a small thing to work on.

Also the playing on after marking the ball, its good to want to keep the ball moving, but sometimes we're our worst enemy, Spurr got caught out once giving off a hospital handpass, a split second of awareness is all it needs.

Otherwise was a great display. Loved Fyfe running through Watson as if he was nothing.

Who is that journalist from w.a that looks homeless? Long hair and rags for clothes. Keep seeing him at training amd in pressers.
He always looks like he's just crawled out of a Denmark commune and driven up the highway in his Kombi to file a report for the match. Probably goes for a surf on his way back. Ross seems to like him but then he seems to ask intelligent questions that aren't the leading ones that footy journos typically ask.

The big things for me watching last night's game were Pearce, A's debut. He looked right at home at AFL level, which is pretty amazing for a 19 year old KPP. Clearly has a long way to go but he really is looking the goods and for me, thats great.

Ballas was fantastic last night. If Lyon really does rate players on 'giving great effort' then Ballas must get 11 out of 10 each week. He chased, tackled, harrassed and gave Essendon no quarter last night. He was responsible for a number of turners all over the ground and last night deserved at least some Brownlow recognition. Its not just what he does with the ball but what he adds off the ball which is quite often far more valuable. Wish we had two of him.

Also the negative flooding tactics employed by Essendon made precise kicking far more valuable last night. Players like Hill and Duffield (and Pav) were hitting targets in the forward line that a number of others just weren't. Wish more of our players had that precise passing skill but I'm grateful for the guys we do have.

That and don't ask ross about Freo being the bookies favourites for the premiership.

Lyon's response to that Journo was unprofessional and petty, IMO. The Bookies are consistently the best predictor of premiership winners, us being the bookie's favourite to win it is a significant occurrence.

Are you just looking for an excuse to have a go? Seriously.
And now you are defending Bookies? Leeches have a bad rap too.

It doesn't really have anything to do with what you think about bookies. The fact that we are now the bookies favourite to win the premiership is a significant event and worth talking about. It's never been the case in our 20 year history and now it is.

For Lyon to bite the journo's head off for asking him about it is unprofessional and petty. He has a bad habit of doing that in press conferences. The journalists are trying to do their job and he is contractually obligated to answer questions of this nature. It gets boring seeing him act like a diva in every press conference.

Means nothing, and Lyon dealt with it the way a professional coach should. As fans we can bask in the fact that we are in a good position, but Lyon has said rapidly that he does not speculate, and only deals in things he can control.
I am sick of journos ask these kind of questions, when they know that all a good coach ever thinks about is the process and next week. As any professional sports person will tell you as soon as you indulge in getting ahead of yourself, you lose focus.

And if Lyon had have said what you just said, then we wouldn't be talking about this.

Instead he chose to belittle the journalist and act like a diva. Totally unnecessary.

If its the only way these scribes are going to learn then i'm all for it. We might actually get some decent analysis for a change. Lyon seems to call it as he sees it, and doesn't super coat things.
Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer.

No, you'll just get more journalists offside. In one thread we've got people complaining that Freo doesn't get enough favourable media coverage or enough coverage at all, then in this thread we have people applauding when our club goes out of their way to offend journalists. It's a 2-way street. You can't go around belittling people who are trying to do their job and then expect them to turn around and write about us favourably in the media.

These journos probably get to ask 1 question a week at their post-match press conference. Every time Ross Lyon chooses to ignore or lampoon their question, that's a week when they go back to their boss empty-handed. I can imagine how they feel, I wouldn't want to be on the end of that kind of treatment.

Well I'm happy.
Essendon came to play. Bit of an arm wrestle in the beginning, then we got on top and never looked back.
Alex Pearce was great. Well looked after by the rest definitely, but held his own after he "got his eye in". I'm looking forward to seeing more of him, hopefully in the next match.
I honestly thought Pav should have rested before this game. Well, proved me my worries unfounded.
Mayne is back to his best. Again excellent defensive pressure but very handy when we have the ball too.
I thought Suban played even better than he did last week (which was pretty good). Hoped he can continue to improve.

Not too worried about taking off the intensity after 1/2 time. Yes it's a risk, but play at that level all game greatly increases chance of injury and suspension as well. At this stage of the season, i'm just happy to bank the 4 points and escape without injury and suspension. Its a nice change that we don't get a MRP citing every week for some minor offences because we are trying too hard. That being said, its quite a change in philosophy from RTB from what we had the last 2 seasons, which was 4 quarter efforts all the way.

Hi Memories.

Hey all, just wanted to congratulate you on the win - a lot of Bombers are pretty bitter considering the umpiring and how we played but it shouldn't take away from how fierce your first few quarters were. Fyfe is life, easily my favorite non bomber to watch and he absolutely pumped both Heppell in the midfield and bodied Hibberd a couple times in defense - haven't seen anyone do that to both players so emphatically before. Serious man crush. Good luck for the rest of the year. Hope you get over the swans and Hawks to win the goods this year.

It was good to see players on the chase and being accountable when it's their turn to go. Pav attempting to chase down a bombers player streaming through the middle was great to watch. Didn't get near him, but he went on a good 50+m run at full tilt going after him.
