I'd really like to see Tommy Sheridan slip into Duff's role over the next year or so - he has the speed to give us the run from defence/match small forwards and I believe the kicking skills to clear the ball from defence.
Me too. He's definitely being groomed for it. Long term Grey and Sherro will likely fill the two pockets. Although I think Sherro may end up on a wing at his peak, perhaps if a Hughes or someone of that ilk can step up over time to release him. For Tommy it might be a bit of a defensive apprenticeship ala Mundy.

I agree with you. 16 disposals at 93% efficiency. Useful game.

And this is were statistics don't tell the whole picture.

In the first half he got turned around by his man too easily, got out bodied by a smaller opponent costing several scoring opportunities and looked totally devoid of confidence - all these things don't appear in stats.

To his credit he did turn it around in the second half but he has been far from stellar this year - I hope Sutty fights back but Sherdan will be eyeing off his position.

Spurr was made to look a bit ordinary by Garlett on a couple of occasions. Lyon seemed to indicate they were trying new things structurally which may have contributed, but we haven't really solved the small forward issue we've had ever since Roger ascended. I wonder if Grey might have a future in that role.

No small forward would enjoy the attention of Grey, he is a tough little bugger and when he punches the ball they usually need to get a new one (reminds me of the Dawson spoil). I have not seen him enough to comment on his speed but he seems to cover the ground quickly, should get a go this year.

For mine he just needs to keeping working on his disposal.

Also Greys disposal is miles away from Duffs.

Correct, but the same could be said for 9 players in the AFL team.

Duffields kicking is elite which makes it difficult to be comfortable having him out of the team.

I have noticed, however, that they are starting to not use Duffield kicking out all the time which must be part of the more versatile approach and perhaps makes him more vunerable to being dropped.

That would be my thoughts re: Sheridan. He doesn't currently have any 'point of difference' over a current midfield incumbent. Good at everything brilliant at nothing. My only concern down back would be his pace. Long term I think it would be Langdon who could look to slot into the Duff role down back. He was quite good off the HBF in my only viewing of him so far.

After watching the replay, I've gotta disagree with this. Sutcliffe was outbodied once, costing one scoring opportunity. Other than that he was excellent. Much better defensively than Spurr yesterday.

Funny after all the pre season talk Clancee hasn't really tagged anyone since round 1. 32 disposals and 10 marks yesterday, really is giving us great rebound from the back half

If you read todays West they noted Suban actually played on Nathan Jones as the nearest we had to a tag and yes Clancee was off half back. Jones was still ok with 18 disposals but Suban was better with 22 and 2 goals. That one passage late in the game where Subs busted through cogestion to intercept, had a look then bounced and ran was very good. He has the toughness to be on the ball Suban but always lacked getting enough of it. Having him follow the opposition best mid who will take him to the ball could be the solution to that and then he is damaging the other way.

Also starting to see Suban kick on his right foot at time this season as well when situation dictates.

Sutcliffe has been quiet-ish all year IMO, perhaps due to essentially being the 3rd tallest defender, if not actually playing that role per se.

Thought the 2nd half this week was probably his best half of football so far in 2015

MJ taking the second tall has reduced the frequency of his attacking forays up the ground. However the extra smaller defender this allows us may compensate. Although Duffield is indeed an elite kick I think he is usually over cautious when putting the ball back into play, thus limiting the opportunities to launch attacks from the defensive goal square. This may be why he has been largely relieved of this responsibility.

Just thought I would say that I think Lyon out-coached Roos, and that was a major factor in this game.

Sure we outgun the D's by a significant margin. But to re-load after losing a couple of forwards of the calibre of Pavlich and Walters so early in the piece, and the critical structural roles they play, must be absolutely gut-wrenching. To end up relying on an out of form medium forward and a young KPP would be a death knell for most sides. Modern AFL is dictated by fitness and rotations, but Roos could not open up the underbelly. In fact the opposite resulted with the Dockers putting on a withering display of hard, aggressive football.

Roos didn't seem like he enjoyed yesterday very much

To be fair on Roos he didn't really have the guns to damage us, even if he did manage to frustrate us. There was not much he could have done.

Melbourne remind me of an early version of Lyon's Fremantle, minus our star power. They really struggle to score and they don't have the hard, experienced bodies to maintain pressure or intimidate the opposition.

Unsure if mentioned, was watching On The Couch tonight and they ran an absolutely ridiculous stat on Fyfe, in terms of 1-on-1 contests won.

Josh Kennedy (WC) sits at 48% of 1-on-1 contests won, which is the 2nd best in the league.

Nat Fyfe is at 68%. 20% above the 2nd best in the comp.

What a ****ing gun.

Jason also highlighted Fyfe so called diving on the ball and not being called for holding the ball.He made a comment about being looked after by the umps .He made the same comments during the game.
Jason forgot to mention the high tackle during that play.

Missed that to be honest.

Yeah he was barracking for Melbourne pretty hard and kept saying " OHH Well that's a free kick to x Melbourne player". Walters has his head taken off and nothing. He is normally not that bad but geez he gave me the shits.

I think the commentary is just getting steadily worse for us. It's fairly subtle, but it starts with the affective tone whenever we score a goal/make a strong play vs the opposition doing the same. I understand it's Melbourne, and we're all looking for signs of improvement but the elongated conversations about free kicks/how the crowd feels about it/how we should all feel about it and the inability to pick up on key elements of the game, i.e. Walters concussion sub is something we're all beginning to get used to.

It's just a continuing poor standard that slightly undermines every win/success we have.. although how we as supporters can have a role in shaping the integrity of the sport we love is beyond me.

Don't know if it's just that we are winning at the moment, but I'm not finding myself getting upset at the umps much this year. I've even thought a few times, yeah we got a lucky one there. I can't remember EVER thinking that before this year! Maybe I'm mellowing in my judgement or opening the other eye while we're winning. I also think our players are playing the 'smartest' they ever have done. We don't give away (compared to previous seasons) stupid free kicks due to bad tackling technique/overzealous tackles.

I think dunstall recognises us for what we are... the biggest hurdle (with sydney) to the hawks premiership this year. As such he will say those things to bring about any small influence in umpiring or perception that could possibly hurt us this year.

It just means we are being taken seriously.

I agree although DeBoer had at least four very stupid over zealous ones on the weekend. Apart from that we are playing smarter than we have before by a long shot.

Hehe you should watch the footy with me then ;) I go off when a free is awarded that just wasn't there or when it's so soft like a finger grazes the back of a defender. When we get a soft free I'll take it but I wish sometimes the umps would just put their whistles away for both teams and only call the really obvious free kicks.
