Women's Footy AFLW Fremantle - 2020 #1 Team - Season Cancelled

Not sure if anyone has watched the interview with Nicole Livingstone on womens.afl but geez I was disappointed. Why is it so hard for people to come out and say "we stuffed up"? The conference system is a joke, everyone knows it. Most of us knew it before the season even started. Hiding behind "all the clubs knew the rules before the season started" is pathetic. Yes they knew the rules, it doesn't mean the rules aren't crap to begin with. Who decides the rules? You and the AFL HQ. The clubs presented their concerns a number of times prior to the season and you lot ignored them and pushed forward. Just please take some friggin responsibility for once! I was hoping we wouldn't just get a female version of Gil in Nicole. Very disappointed.

Brisbane and us can lose _up_ to 8 because there are a lot of players that only nominate within their home state.

All the expansion clubs can sign up to 12 players, so both WC and GC will have to go after some interstate talent in order to get their 12 players.

In contrast the new Vic clubs can meet their quota by recruiting from within Vic only.

It will be interesting to see if WC go hard over ex-WA players like Sabrina FT and Randall.

At the end of trade week we can only have 22 on our list.

Clubs can now offer 2 year contracts, but can only give 1 year contracts to new draftees. Overdue, but will complicate things. AFLW clubs have to turnover a fair portion of their list.

If they stick to many players on 2 year contracts, and then the new draftees and lesser lights shine, they may be forced to delist them at the end of the year, because to many other players have a year to go on the contract.

I don't think it makes much difference to expansion, players Eagles target with 2 year deals would likely get 2 years with Freo.

I don't think it's tied to tiers, or a certain number of players. Apart from new draftees, any number of players can get them, so long as the club can achieve the number of delistings required at the end of the year.

It’s just been announced that for the first time the girls can be offered 2-year contracts instead of the single year they’ve been given each of the first 3 years. Not sure what this means in term of WC knocking on the doors of our players’ managers. Hopefully if plays into the hands of our more highly ranked players, knowing that they’ve got 2 years security on a list that’s just played finals and are not gelling after a couple of years of not quite getting it together. Or they might like the opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a club they might have supported before. (Stay Kellie Gibson, please...).

And in other news - 6 Freo players have made the AA squad:
Bowers
Hooker
Houghton
Antonio
Gibson
Duffy

Not a bad effort!

Anyone want to invade a nearby pub afterwards? The Great Northern Hotel is about 1km away and has been a good venue for us Purple wearing fashionistas.

<edit>maybe I move this to WayToGo's game thread once it's up...

Cooper in the interview spoke about how he wasnt sure how they would have got a team on the field for the grand final if they had made it through. Donnellan wasn't a certainty to be back, Hooker had to have an injection in her sternum to get on the park. Bowers had a hip pointer injury that would have kept her out next week, and Miller did a hamstring.

Yes, it was great to listen to Coops, Dana and Kara before yesterday's game. We were certainly the walking wounded. Trent said that Hooker's pre-game jab was the stuff of 'pulp fiction'. So proud of our girls and am feeling their pain for the loss.

Kiara Bowers runner-up to Erin Phillips in the AFLPA MVP, and runner-up to Chelsea Randall in Most Courageous player. Sabreena Duffy third in best young player to Maddy Prespakis.

Congrats girls!

(Anyone know who our three nominees were for MVP and Best Young Player? Anyone and everyone is up for most courageous I believe.)

Plenty of money for women's sport in the budget, yet Freo Oval gets nothing. Are we even lobbying anyone?

At the very least, can they put up a shelter between the wing and the goals at the hospital end? There's only so much shade a few Moreton Bay figs can provide.

Dana Hooker (bench), Kiara Bowers (centre) and Gemma Houghton (FF) all made AA.

Dana Hooker r/u to Erin 🐐 Phillips for B&F (for the second time after 2018 r/u to Emma Kearney).

Kiara Bowers finished equal 5th.

Kara Donnellan top 10.

Ashley Sharpe GOTY.

Sabreena Duffy 4th in rising star.

All-in-all a successful night at the awards for our girls.

Yep great work all round. Duffy perhaps should've been higher but otherwise all seems fair.

And fits with the B+F this evening which was:

#1 Bowers
#2 Hooker
#3 Houghton

Congrats KB on a tremendous season!

Just to add to that:

Players Award: Kiara Bowers
Best Clubwoman: Evie Gooch
Best First Year Player: Philippa Seth
Young Leader Award: Hayley Miller

(A little surprising it wasn’t Sabreena Duffy, but they award it to the player who finishes highest in the B&F, and Seth finished 6th, after Steph Cain and Ebony Antonio who rounded out the top5.)

Well done to all of them, especially Turbo - shows how much we missed her in the first two seasons. And just FYI in case you missed it, she’s recommitted to the club, signing a two-year deal. :)
