A local boy! Welcome mate.

Pick 61 - Shane Yarran

Club: Subiaco
Position: General forward
Date of birth: 2 June 1989
Height: 186cm
Weight: 79kg

From the Freo recruiters
This was Shane’s second year at Subiaco, which culminated in him playing in his second WAFL premiership. He also won the Bernie Naylor Medal for most goals in the WAFL with 54. Shane played one season in the Peel Football League in 2013 before joining Subiaco for the past two seasons. He is currently working as a trade assistant for his assistant coaches plumbing business. When Shane was younger he was a part of a group who committed a number of different crimes but has shown a great deal of remorse for his actions. He has a supportive partner and a newborn child and is doing his best to move on with his life. Shane’s size, speed, agility and ability overhead make him an incredibly hard match up for opposition defenders. His marking improved significantly this year and he became a really serious threat in the air. Shane kicked 4.2 in a single quarter against Peel in the WAFL. He reads the game well and with his speed and smarts is a dangerous lead up target but can also attack out the back.

Subiaco’s Shane Yarran is a notable inclusion among 23 WAFL players invited to this year’s State draft combine.

The 26-year-old was on the list released yesterday for the October 17 combine at HBF Arena.

Yarran has emerged as the WAFL’s most consistent forward in just his second season at Subiaco, booting 42 majors this year to comfortably lead the race for the Bernie Naylor Medal.

The invitation came just days after he was dropped from Subiaco’s league team for missing training. Yarran hopes to follow the precedent set by Sandover medallist Andrew Krakouer, who was drafted from the WAFL by Collingwood in 2010 at 27.

Subiaco football manager Luke Sanders said Yarran had excelled for a sustained period.

“The biggest question mark for Shane was his consistency in performances both in games and week to week,” Sanders said.

“He’s worked really hard to make sure he’s consistent and playing our structures. He’s been able to do that and I think he’s leading the goal kicking because of it.”

Yarran tested well in his first appearance at a State combine last year, recording a 2.82sec. time in the 20m sprint — the equal-fifth quickest in draft testing history.

Hopefully we can get him and teach him not to get the ball and just worry about defending up forward.

Jokes aside if it could be dangerous having the ballas walters yarran triple threat, although no doubt the coaching panel will recognise that walters kicks too many goals and will try to move him away from goals to defend further up the ground.

Not sure he will get many games - he will be behind Ballas and Walters, and then fighting with Crozier for a spot. Definitely good backup for when Balla's gets suspended though :)

Mayne will have some completion for his spot now.

Remember during the WAFL GF they were cutting to Yarran's Mrs and young baby. Hopefully this will help him stay on the right track off the field, often does the trick.

So who do we think Yarran will be competing with for a spot? Mayne and Ballas?
He'll replace Mayne up forward. Might see Mayne down back permanently now.

If your gonna draft a 26 yo he is gonna play straight up. I for one would be more than happy to see Yarren take Mayne's or Ballantines' spot. Those two have been average the last two seasons.

Get this s**t out of this thread. I want to see talks of him as a player and what he brings to the table for us not everyone speculating whether he's a criminal and the risk of drafting him.
The talent is there, no doubt. He could kick 40 goals for us if he plays every game. But discussing his off field behaviour is no different to discussions about Bennell, or Curnow for Carlton. In modern day football off field behaviour is just as important as playing ability.

30 goal (50+ in WAFL this year?) return and a permanent B22 which is possible would make him a steal also, I like the idea of him replacing Mayne but don't like the idea of Mayne replacing someone / blocking off a youngster down back.

Mayne in particular, but could also be compete with Taberner if he drops off as IMO he is both a very good leading forward with IMO better hands and a lot better kick than Tabs.

Ballantyne the 2014 all australian was average that year? and worth being replaced by a wafl player in 2014... ok..

Yarran plays more a marking role than the genuine small forward.

While his past is "not ideal" he has served his time and his from behaviour since his release it would suggest ge has been rehabilitated. Which is one of the functions of our prison system.
