What reasons would there be for it not being Fyfe?
- Arguably best player in the comp
- The more inspirational player
- Even if he misses half a dozen games due to the back, no big deal having Mundy cover
- He's not too young
- Doesn't seem to struggle with attention

Seems a little odd.

Yes. It was an unexpected result but hopefully it's only a temporary distraction. As the process is so open with players casting and reading their votes in front of the group, it's natural that the media will question Fyfe's popularity. This is already happening - Hagdorn's speculating that Fyfe will leave in 2017.

Shoot me down for being old school but......I would find this open voting process unusual and perhaps awkward as I'd want to know why Joe Blow didn't have me in his top 5 and I wouldn't buy the 'you're too young and don't have the experience' bit.

It's definitely a massive blow to Fyfe's ego. Every media interview late last year he said (between the lines) how much he wanted it. His brownlow speech was a massive call for it IMO. That said he only made leadership a priority last year and I doubt he overtook Mundy's great leadership and respect he’s gained over numerous years. He's unlucky that we have great respected older leaders at our club and I'm sure he understands that.

Regarding Fyfe's next contract... Fyfe not getting the captaincy is a blow to us resigning him! Not because he's pissed he didn't get it but more because it's harder to leave the club if you're the captain, I'm sure the club is a little anxious about it.

If Nat's ego thought he had dibs on the captaincy, then it was probably good for his ego. I think the only people anxious about it are the fans.

What we know about the process is speculation though. For instance, Pav is in the leadership group, but he couldn't be captain, so how was he voted for, or was he outside the process. We don't know at what stage the players read out their nominations - if there's a further vote for captain afterwards, or if some players have already, like Pav, declined some sort of leadership role and couldn't be nominated etc.

I heard one of the younger journos on PR say that each player read out their 5 nominees, but I wouldn't think he'd be in the room witnessing the process - maybe he just got a vague idea from asking someone.

I actually don't mind the idea of players reading aloud their nominees in front of others because it gives everyones voice equal respect. If you did a secret ballot on paper you might get some Freddo Frog or Humphrey B. Bear type candidates, plus there's no chance of the players thinking that the coaches just pick who they want anyway - regardless of the vote.

How do you know it is a definite blow to his ego ?

How do you know it will hamper negotiations for his signature at his next contract ?

How do you know the club is anxious ?

Pure speculation and bluster

Hi all, I'm back from leave after almost 4 weeks of cabin fever in the wilds of suburban Melbourne. Happy 2016 and all that. So...

Someone who would leave their club for not being made captain is someone who probably wouldn't make a very good captain anyway.

Leigh Colbert (Sorry, that's an opposite example). Likewise, just because you make someone captain it doesn't mean that they'll stay. Chris Judd, exhibit ii.

Let's stop speculating. Safe bet is next time Fyfe is in front of a camera he laughs off suggestions he was disappointed at not being made captain, and talks up how much he is looking forward to working with his fellow beast in the middle to bring home a premiership for Freo.

Hackdorn spruiking on P-Aaargh this morning, saying Fyfe will now leave in 2017 after being "snubbed" for the captaincy.

Expect an announcement for a long contract and Fyfe to stay until
2022 soon.

Hey Grapey, do yourself a favour and stop tormenting yourself !!!. Lean over and turn the radio off?.

PArrrrrrrrrgh + Hackers = brain numbing.

Creating stories where there are none is how Hackdick pays his bills.
No one is paying Fremantle supporters for doing it,so why bother?
Mundy and Fyfe are pros playing for the same ambitious large AFL club.
The entire enterprise is focused on onfield/off-field success and constantly analyses the behaviours required to optimise that prospect.
I see more reasons for cooperation and support than friction.
The rest is gossip, masquerading as news/reality.

PS:wasn't at all surprised the players selected Mundy and reckon Fyfe will be right behind him all the way, along with everyone else.

I know, I'm a glutton for punishment as I listen to 6pr driving to work. I do find it cathartic to scream at the radio telling them how stupid they are - a response that Baz and Mills provoke on a regular basis. Makes me more mellow towards people at work when I get there.

Only ever listen to 6PR via audioboom to catch up on Fremantle personnel giving interviews.
Karl Langdon has been clinically proven to cause brain haemoraging and Brad does a good imitation of a haemorrhoid but Ross or any of the Freo crew enhance the listening experience.;)

I have it on very good authority that many at the club were upset that Fyfe didn't get the captaincy and he will definitely leave at the end of 2017.
