Agassi was such a humble champion. Used to be my favourite player to follow

That’s freak athletic ability by both players.
Has a grand slam ever had 2 epic finals like this before?
The 2012 US Open gets forgotten but both Finals were epic

Williams breaking Azarenka serving for the title in the 3rd Set then winning the match
Murray overcoming a charging Djokovic in just under 5 hours to end the Fred Perry curse

Much like this FO it was both World No.1s losing the finals

Imagine playing your best tennis at the end of the 5th set after 5 hours of fantastic tennis.

Stupidly absurd, what a final.

I said before this was one the top 5 matches I'd seen, and this was midway through the fifth set, but even if you include the...

2008 Wimbeldon Final, Nadal vs. Federer (considered by many the greatest ever match)

2012 Australian Open Final
Djokovic vs. Nadal, I think the longest Grand Slam final in history (extremely gruelling, 5 hours 53 minutes),

2009 Wimbledon Final
Federer vs. Roddick

5–7, 7–6(6), 7–6(5), 3–6, 16–14

2019 Wimbledon Final
Djokovic d. Federer (longest Wimbledon final, final set tiebreak at 13–12).

I'd say this is the greatest match ever

Historic Comeback: Alcaraz overcame a two-set deficit and saved three championship points, a rare feat in Grand Slam finals. Beatin Sinner who'd won 20 sets in a row (first time s player has done that in GS and lost).

Record Duration: At 5 hours and 29 minutes, it became the longest final in Roland Garros history and the second-longest Grand Slam final ever.

Firsts: It was the first French Open final decided by a 10-point fifth-set tiebreak and the first Grand Slam final between two players born in the 2000s .

For me this was the most intense, fun, gruelling, and crazy shot making final ever, where the shot making on the fifth was just as good if not better then the rest of the match, or any set I've seen in a while, or maybe ever.

If peak Djokovic had played peak Federer, I'd reckon we may have seen a similar match, but I think the way these guys play, their level is even higher.

It felt like watching an actual wizard 🪄 play an actual cyborg 🤖

Edit. Borg v McEnroe 1980 is considered the greatest by some, but I was a little young to witness it.

Amazing comeback from Alcaraz to win that final after saving 3 championship points for Sinner, Rafa would be proud of him.

Unfortunately I didn't go the whole distance like Carlos did, I fell asleep on the couch after the 4th set and missed the 5th set.

It was the longest final in French Open history as well as being one of the greatest finals in history, at least I watched most of it.

Nobody cares you went to sleep, unlucky.

BTW what didn't you agree with about my post before that you gave it a dislike?

Sorry, I meant to give your post a like not a dislike, I just changed it.

That Murray Djoker 2012 Final was awesome.

I watched the entire match on replay and avoided the result like a plague that Monday morning.

I can count on one hand the number of Tennis matches of watched in its entirety on replay. Usually if I don't watch it live I don't bother, but happy to make an exception for a Grand Slam final.

One of the best finals I've seen. Tennis is in good hands with these two.

Both finals were epic, it's why I can't stand a million upsets in draws. Give me 80% of the top 8 seeds in the quarters thanks.

For me this is the best tennis ever.

Just rewatched the 2012 Aussie Open final an all-timer for sure. But after seeing the 2025 French Open final, I’m even more convinced we’re witnessing a whole new level of tennis.

The 2012 AO final was physically brutal, but honestly...
  • The rallies were safe compared to today, with plenty of mid-court balls.
  • Shots weren’t painting the lines like Alcaraz and Sinner are now.
  • Djokovic and Nadal were basically playing high-percentage tennis, not the relentless risk-taking we saw in 2025.
  • Even on clay, the 2025 RG final was faster by at least 10-20% in pace and the angles way more acute.

The 2012 AO final also had a rain delay in the fourth set and both guys took an eternity on serves which drags out the clock and you get 5h53m. Remove those delays, and the 2025 RG final is probably the longest match, played at high intensity and high level for each set from both players simultaneously.

McEnroe said the tennis level is higher than he’d ever seen, and that’s coming from a guy who’s seen every era.

Courier basically said this is the new standard, that these two guys are redefining what’s possible.

Roddick called it top 5 all time, and Wilander flat-out said it’s some of the best tennis he’s ever seen as well.

IMO, Alcaraz and Sinner are both a level above the Big 3 now. It's undeniable. I know that’s a big call, but watch both matches again.

In this final, they’re hitting lines, absorbing pace, scrambling like no one else. There’s no safe ball from either of them. Every shot is played with full commitment and skill.

Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, absolute legends but there's been a shift and experts have noticed.

Courier said, "I mean, that level from Carlos [Alcaraz] in that tiebreaker was as close to heavenly tennis as I could possibly imagine." McEnroe said "You would make a serious argument with both guys that they would be favoured to beat Nadal, at his best [at Roland Garros]". The 2012 AO final was objectively slower, safer, and less precise than what Alcaraz and Sinner are producing.

This is the highest standard of tennis ever played. Wimbledon will be fascinating. They're also only a year apart in age and hitting peaks at the exact same time, which potentially makes this a greater rivarvly then Federer-Nadal or any of the big 3 in configuration.

Thoughts? Anyone else think we just saw the bar get raised? Or is it too soon to say these two are redefining the sport?

Upsets have their place. The Loïs Boisson story was absolutely fantastic for tennis.

But I agree, only 1 or 2 upset runs ideally.
