Riley Onley (195cm mid)

While his form wasn’t great in the early part of this year, Onley certainly built into the season and stepped up during the under-18 national championships. When he applies himself, the big-bodied midfielder can have a big impact on matches. Onley’s inside game has long been a strength with his contested ball and clearance-winning ability, but he has also improved his outside game and defensive pressure. He provided some run and bounce through the midfield for Vic Country, along with some neat ball use going forward to get involved in scoring chains. The AFL Academy member’s best game came against the Allies when he gathered 28 disposals, seven clearances and 13 score involvements. Onley finished top-six in voting for the Larke Medal as the player of the championships, while he was also named on the bench in the under-18 All-Australian side. However, a hamstring tendon injury sustained in the final term of the last game against Vic Metro sidelined him for the rest of the year.
