The specific need for KPP's hasn't just suddenly appeared. They got Bradley because they have problems. They moved Tarrant and Grover because they had problems. They gave Murphy a new 2 year deal (for Gawds sake) because they had problems. KPP's is a much bigger problem than small forward, and we got a couple of them in the last draft.

I don't disagree that we have needed KPPs for a while, but our need for decent midfielders was much greater. A few reasons; firstly, the game is more and more a midfielders game and you need lots of them with the speed of the game and the number of roatations. We had a couple of slow insiders and that was about all. Secondly, when we drafted last year we had Pav, Tarrant, McPharlin, Grover, Johnson, Bradley, Drum and Murphy so there were a couple of elite, a couple of decent and couple of back up/ potential players. Remembering that last year McPharlin was rated much higher than he is after this year, Murphy hadn't proven he was a complete spud, Bradley had a good 2008, Grover was still a very servicable tall defender, Drum was expected to come on further this year, Johnson was going to play a lot more games etc. The club addressed the most pressing need first getting some fast and running players, plus plugging an immediate hole (small forward). As a roughie we did draft Sibo and Shephard onto the rookies.

Well... regardless of order and need... I'd be happy if we picked up :
- Tapscott (Reliable; Consistent; Versatile; Good decision making and skills... reminds me a bit of Jonathon Brown);
- Morabito (Versatile, quick, solid mark)
- Colyer (Fast with good, quick skills);
- Winmar (Good skills, versatile);
- Hutchings (Reminds me of DeBoer... Hard at it).

Our draft strategy, IMHO, should be to pick up best available.

He would be a great replacement for dodd.

I think if anything Sheppard would replace Duffield in the back half, and let him move into the midfield. I can't see Sheppard being able to play on tall forwards, like Dodd can sort of do.

I also don't think that finding a replacement for Dodd would be particularly high up on our list. But if we were to look at a versatile second or third tall defender, than I would go Mitch Taylor from the NT. Has been invited to the draft camp, but I think is still likely to go in the Rookie Draft rather than the National Draft. He is quite raw and would take some development, but has been likened to Darryl White :thumbsu:

As for the people mentioning Colyer, personally I feel there should be better options available at our third round pick and I definitely wouldn't consider him any earlier. And if we were to pick up a Jetta or Christensen with our second rounder, than I wouldn't imagine Colyer would offer anything different.

can anyone tell me where to get the best information on the youngsters coming through in this years draft? everyone seems to know everything about them but id like to read up on them myself

Well, that's why I didn't name a particular order. I just named players who I thought were good value.

Jetta (i'm guessing) will most likely go to the Eagles. But if he wanted to play for Freo, then I'd be happy to pick him before Colyer. But I don't rate Christensen much.

I think Colyer's clearance work is quite good and he's pretty damn quick, plus, he does all the small team things like shepherding, tackling etc. So he seems more like a 'team' player to me. But that's just my opinion.

I do rate Tapscott and Morabito quite highly though... and wouldn't mind using our first pick to get either of them. (I doubt we'd get both players.)

Kids dont have preferences unless they are Trent Cotchin.

They want to get into the AFL system anyway possible.... Jetta, although is a big eagles supporter will be happy enough staying in WA if we draft him.

Morabito
Jetta
Black
Fyfe
Priest

PSD - Go best available tall.

Really wouldn't mind two more draft picks in the 2nd - 5th round range.

Here might be another good place to start to go with that link above, there are little bios on all the draft camp attendees:

Colyer vs Jetta is an interesting one ... don't know why but I thought Jetta was taller (he's listed at 178cm). I might be misinformed because I've only seen one game that Colyer played for WA ... but damn it was a pretty good one.

The main query on Colyer would be his height, but if we are thinking about a lightning fast midget with Jetta ... I wonder if Colyer in the third round wouldn't be a better outcome than Jetta in the 2nd round???

ANT555 on the Dons board is doing up a reasonable list. He has the NSW/NT/QLD guys so far. There is a draft section on the AFL site.

There was another web site that was listed in one of the earlier posts in the drafting section that directed you to it. Sorry KPR, I know that is unhelpful but I had a quick and there at the time and there was bugger all on it.

I don't think Jetta will last to the second round.

I'll be shocked if he goes in the first dozen.

Daniel Rich was 18 but build like a 25 year old and slid to pick 7 because clubs thought he lacked upside. Jetta is in his 20's but built like a 16 year old so I wouldn't be picking him in the first round.

I think it is abit early to really know who we should go for and it is hard considering we probably havnt seen much of the non WA guys. If I had to make a list now though it would go like this (Probably will change my mind though:
Our first Rd pick: praying for Trengrove but if gone then Butcher and if gone then Morabito.
Our second Rd Pick: Jetta as he brings pace and skill but if gone a KPP in Panos/Carlisle/Talia.
Our 3rd Rd Pick: Probably Black or Shepheard if he slips.
Our 4th Rd Pick: Either WInmar or Hutchison

Not too sure after that but hopefully we could pick up another 2nd/3rd pick and nab another tall if we dont get Butch/Panos or another mid type such as Duncan or Cunnington (highly unlikely he will slip this far though).

Fremantle need to get into his ear about acting like a complete moron in his interviews ;)

It worked for Rioli...

For what it's worth, I think it will be his interviews that will make him slip though. Not because he is stupid or anything, but just because he is apparently so shy and not overly keen on an interstate move.

In my opinion, Jetta will either go to Melbourne at 18, Fremantle at 20 or West Coast at 22.

So pick 4 it is. It was hoping for too much for Richmond to get up at Subi.

I noticed that consensus on the Richmond board is split between Morabito/Butcher at pick 3 (assuming Trengrove/Scully are gone).

If Morabito is taken by Richmond. It leaves us with a choice between Lucas, Cunningham and Martin IMO. Don't want Butcher, we need a good mid to add to Palmer, Hill, Suban etc in the middle so Pav can go forward.

Not very forward thinking, personally I think we should take the best available with out first, then recruit according to need.

Spot on.

well according to a Mark Duffield article a couple of weeks ago there is a "clear" top 4 in this draft - Scully, Trengove, Morabito and Butcher - so if the three midfielders are taken then I think we have to go with Butcher

Absolutely - we just sit back and call out the name left, I am more than happy with that. I know the Tigers board is ummming and aaaaahing but I'd be shocked if Butcher slides to us, I'd be less surprised to see Trengrove drp.

If it goes this way and the Roos take Lucas ...the Eagles pick is where it becomes wide open.

Below is what I think we should do with the players on our list. Some of the players that I have put down for trade are speculative – Schammer, Hinkley, Tarrant, Drum, Dodd. We should check out what we could get for these guys before they (maybe) drop off - otherwise keep them.

I have us cutting or trading at least 8 players, as well as, pratt and Connelly from the rookie list. Upgrading Broughton, Pearce and De Boer and moving Grover to the Veterans list. That will get us 6 picks in the national draft – 4, 22, 40, 58 and whatever others leave behind. And 4 picks in the rookie draft.

3) Schammer – Trade for late 2nd early 3rd round or player/ or keep
4) Haselby – 2 year contract
5) Ibbotson – Keep
6) Solomon – 1 year or retire
7) Peake – Trade – 3rd round or a fringe player from another team – Jetta?
8) Suban – Keep
9) Drum – Trade – 2nd round or player/ or keep
10) Palmer – Keep
11) Headland – Keep
12) O’Brien – Cut
13) Pratt – Cut
14) Grover – Veterans
15) Crowley – Trade – early 2nd round / or keep
16) Mundy – Trade – Early 2nd round / or keep
17) Ballantyne – Keep
18) McPharlin – Keep
19) Hinkley – Trade 3rd round? Late 2nd/ or keep for 1 more year
20) Tarrant – Trade late 1st round or keep
21) Foster – Cut
22) Thorton – Trade 4th round/ or cut
23) Mayne – Keep
24) Campbell – Cut
25) Dodd – Trade late 2nd round/ or keep
26) Bradley – 1 yr contract
27) Daniel Gilmore – Cut
28) Murphy – Trade 5th round / cut
29) Pavlich – 5 year contract
30) Clarke – Keep
31) Sandilands – keep
32) Hill – Keep
33) Bucovas – keep
34) Hall – Keep
35) Ruffles – Keep
36) Browne – cut
37) Johnson – keep
38) Walters – keep
39) Sibosado – keep on rookie list
40) De Boer – Upgrade
41) Duffield – keep
42) Head – cut
43) Hayden – keep
44) Connelly – cut
45) Shepheard – keep on rookie list
46) Pearce – Upgrade
47) Van Berlo – keep on rookie list

Too harsh??

How much of a influence will the new kicking screening have on the recruiters selctions?

Jetta is not we need the most. We already have Ballatyne, Ruffles and Walters as small forwards. Our needs are key position players and midfielders.
