Freo Forward Line 2019

McCarthy - Taberner - Walters

Matera - Hogan - Lobb

McCarthy as a lead up on the wings as a second target to Tabs when we're trying to get the ball out of D50 which remains a problem. In our forward areas he should aim to become one of the elite defensive forwards in the game. Sonny as the link between midfield and the forward line.

That's real slow

Why do people love Taberner so much? Honestly, it’s an amazing feat... the guy has never ever dominated a full match, has never ever even had a good month, and five or six years deep into a career with intense patronisation he still can’t lodge himself into the 22.

Come on, these arrivals and Cox’s decent showings at age 19 have stamped his papers.

Unreal. Unreal. What’s the appeal? People just like him for the sake of it.

Sunk Cost fallacy?

In any rate I'd personally prefer Cox to swing into defence and play a McPharlin style KPD (who has McGovern style intercept marking roaming off his direct opponent). His set shot routine and goal kicking action are beyond abysmal and he doesn't have a natural leading arc. He can however clunk a mean contested mark. Also gives us some powerful depth in defence and up forward. (And he could just as easily be a swingman going forward ala Justin Leppitsch)

I'd rather play Lobb deep, Hogan as second tall/CHF and get him leading up and into space and using strengths. McCarthy taking the third tall and leading into the holes with Matera/Walters roaming at their ankles. If McCarthy is being beaten give him license to roam up high half forward and get a few touches and use his surprising ability for a third tall to be able to hit a target Inside 50. This would be the ideal time to rest Fyfe forward for 5/10 minutes as McCarthy goes upfield. The trouble is locking it inside as we are a tad tall. McCarthy would need to improve his defensive efforts considerably.

If McCarthy gets his shit together that is. Then again I wouldn't be writing off young Dixon yet either. Still young, does everything well below the knees as well as overhead. Give him a little taste of it this year protected by Lobb and Hogan and who knows? I have more hope he'll turn into a good KPF/third tall option than I have of Taberner being a consistent target. Taberners weapons of contested marking and endurance are let down by his poor field kicking which limits his usefulness as a Riewoldt style CHF considerably.

I like the options today has given us.

West Coast are very good at moving the ball slowly.
Really good. Also really good at rotating their forwards to create easy 'get out' options coming out of their D50 and having multiple marking forwards is a big part of that. They're not afraid to go really direct when they get the ball in the hands of right user or they have targets in place though.

I don't think West Coast are the most skilled team in the comp. I think they have a very structured, positional approach to moving the ball from the back with lots of options for the ball user. I think teams that play a more contested style and counterattacking teams end up looking less skilled because of their style.

Having forwards that defenders have to respect gives you a lot of options as a coach. A lot easier to create space by pulling defenders out of position.

Fair enough view. Think it is that style (or skills, pick your poison) that makes their talls so successful though. I just don't have the same confidence in our own coaching team to make the most use out of an overtly tall team.

Well, that's why Ross gets paid the big bucks. He's obviously spoken to Rosich about how he wants to play in 2019 and what kind of players he needs to implement that plan and so we've loaded up on contested marking targets. He doesn't have far to look for inspiration on how to get the most out of a tall forward line and he's a smart enough coach to change his methods.

Put it this way, if by round three it seems like the plan for our forward line is for big gangly blokes to run around like headless chooks trying to turn the ball over he should be sacked with haste.

Would prefer not to see McCarthy play for Freo again.

Walters Hogan Tabs
Cox Lobb Matera

I'm going freo draft Matthew Parker and marlion Pickett from pith freo personally creating a forward line of...

Pickett - hogan - Parker
Walters - lobb - cox

HF: Walters, Hogan, McCarthy

FF: Matera, Lobb, Colyer

Just because we have all these talls doesn't mean we need to play em. Cox is still young and its not unusual for a 20 year old tall to be in and out of the side.

Tabs, Apeness and Lobb are all playing for the same position imo and at the moment Lobb has the most runs on the board.

So many potentially viable forward setups. Weird feeling. A good feeling. Guess they'll just have to duke it out for spots over the preseason.

We play a five man forward line generally with the sixth a mid.

Hogan and Lobb the talls. If one goes down the look at Taberner/Darcy/Dixon/McCarthy/Kersten.

Walters deep forward pocket crumbing. DON'T play him midfield.

Other pocket from Ballantyne (incumbent)/Switkowski(primary contender)/Bennell/Crowden/Giro/Matera. Maybe Langdon or Carter.

One medium forward - Mundy is the incumbent. Maybe McCarthy if Mundy is injured. Develop up something here from Draft. Maybe Medhat.

We can't play a three tall man forward IMO - we will get slaughtered on the rebound.

Then why spend salary cap and picks on Lobb if we're not going to use a combination of talls?

Because he is an upgrade on the ones we had
Is he much of an upgrade on Tabs? You need to balance priorities to have a successful list, Lobb will be on decent coin. Reduces our chances of picking up another elite mid next year. I'd be dissapointed if they didn't at least try it. The last team to try was probably Sydney 2015. Buddy, Tippett, Goodes, Towers/Reid all as tall marking targets.
