Review Freo Squeak Over the Line Against Hawks - Rd 13 Review

This is buying into the myth that Hawthorn are a young side on the up a bit. Yes they played 11 players with under 50 games yesterday, but equally they had 8 players over 27 and only 4 players under 21 (a lot of mature aged picks or 3 to 6th year players on low games in the side) and this is with McAvoy, Impey and Gunston out.

Mitchell has them well coached but this is absolutely the best they can play (and as we saw it wasn't 4 quater sustainable) and I don't see where their improvement is coming from. The young midfield talent cupboard in particular is bare. Frankly I think losing all these games despite being in them is doing them a favour. Nevertheless they a solid chance to implode next year if they don't start winning then and bang, it's rebuild for real.
Agree, both us and them have similar average age, but their talent is lumped at the wrong end. Just going off the coaches votes, most of their top end talent is over 27, ours is under 25.

Their squad is cooked, all because geriatric Kennett, believed it would be a good idea to attempt to rewrite history, and win a premiership by spending exorbitant amounts on the trading in of has-beens.

Looks like young Dominic here is in laugh it off and "Keep delusional and carry on" mode lol.

felt like we missed that extra big man marking on the wing as we took it out that we had seen previously with Tabs or even Meek. Instead, there were a number of cases where the mark on the wing was directed at Schultz who was well held there by CJ, or Cerra and neither could take it so it shot back inside our D50 resulting in our defenders being busier than usual. Hopefully Tabs will be back to plug that hole next game.

Logue was very much and kindly “destroyed” in his Sicily matchup. Taberner would’ve helped but thought Lobb was underwhelming and especially considering his form. He should’ve done more.

point is the defenders were kicking directly to Schultz and Banfield on the wing. That isn't normal for this season. That is a kick typically to a tall. The result was the ball went straight back the other way giving Hawks another chance. IMO that's one of the reasons it always looked like Hawks were in it. Lobb was not in the region so obviously it wasn't his job.

Has to be a tall, had to be Logue or Lobb. It was often Logue who was out muscled often.

Needed to use the middle more often aswell as it was open and wasn’t used pretty consistently.

Nah, watch the replay, Logue killed him in the 3rd quarter. Resulted in a lot of our goals.
Sicily ended up moving to Banfield late in the game and Frost went back at stages.

Don’t think Logue won any contest he did halve them in the third with everyone tho 🫡

Yep agree with this. Logue got outdone numerous times by Sicily, will be a good learning experiencr for him. I think we would have used the middle more if it hadn't got greasy, but also due to the pressure applied by the Hawks.

Logue absolutely got done over by Sicily in the first half in his 1:1s, it was a big learning experience for him because once he got out-positioned in the lead up to the contest he couldn't get back into it like he could against other defenders.
Where Logue still did well was the more pack-like situations, got some important hands in that created a scoring shot that would have otherwise been intercepted or swept out as well.

Certainly wasn't Logue's best game but there were still elements to work with.

I'm sure that's what Sicily would've told him. Ad naseum. Hard to discern the real extent of Sicily's game between all the cheap shots, lip and sniping.

Backs, especially ones like Sicily, are more likely to play scenarios rather than on any one particular player regardless.

Logue took an excellent contested mark on Siciliy early in the third to help Freo exit their back half. Siciliy then followed him back down into the forward line. A little while later he left Logue, who was at that point playing deeper forward and Sicily played next layer out from the contests on Freo's half-forward line.

Logue had Sicily on him when he won the ball in 2 contests that lead directly to Freo goals in the 3rd. Depending on how you look at it (as one was a free kick in the goal square) Logue's winning the contest led directly to 3 of the first 4 Freo goals in the 3rd, which really set up the lead.

Credit to Sicily, I had not seen a player that could move Logue around or under the footy that much. I can certainly see Sicily being in the all Australian discussion but I also liked the way the Logue fought it out and readjusted and contributed to several goals.
