Dear Aph,

It gives me great pleasure to let you know that today we have surpassed our all-time membership record, a record that we set in 2019.

As of 6pm this evening, we have 64,270 Carlton members signed up, which is an increase of more than 10,000 members compared to the same time last year. This keeps us on track to chase down our 2020 target of 75,000 members and we could not be more appreciative of the support the Club has received from you, our members, in helping us break this record well before Round 1.

As far as club financial recoveries go, history tells us that often they are reliant on football performance, whereby rapid and sustained on-field improvement increases revenues. They can sometimes involve a group of corporates and coteries getting together and removing huge chunks of debt on behalf of the Club, and other times financial recoveries can be heavily supported by the AFL.

Our financial recovery however, has been almost entirely led by our members. Our average home crowd increased by more than any other club in 2019, and our membership base is on track to grow by 50 per cent across three years. As a member, you should be so proud of what you have done for your football club and on behalf of our board, players, coaches and staff, again, we want to say thank you.

It was about this time last year that the Club launched The Carlton Way, our five-year strategic plan. Within that plan, we highlighted the key priorities of the Club from 2019 – 2023 and provided a scorecard of 10 key targets that we would hold ourselves accountable to. One year into the plan, I thought it was worthwhile providing members with an update on our progress.

1. Win Premierships
In year one of the plan, our AFLW team rebounded from a wooden spoon to play off in a Grand Final. We have won eight of our last 11 games and our coaches continue to refine a game plan that will provide us the best opportunity to consistently compete at the highest level. Our AFL team had a vastly improved second half of 2019, winning six of our last 11 games with two of those losses being by less than a goal. David Teague and Andrew Russell, along with their respective teams of coaches and high-performance staff, have our AFL playing group primed to kick off 2020 and build on the improvement that we saw in the back half of last season.

2. 100,000 members
Finishing 2018 with approximately 56,000 members, we had our biggest year-on-year membership growth in the Club’s 155-year history, growing by more than 8,000 members in 2019. We are currently tracking more than 10,000 members up on this time last year with an aim to sign 75,000 members by the end of 2020.

3. 250,000 active supporters on our database
Already up 40,000 from when the plan was launched, we are now approaching 175,000 active supporters on our database. Carlton was also ranked number one across the AFL in a range of digital metrics in 2019.

4. 200 Carlton IN Business members
Along with the Carlton College of Sport, CIB is the key non-traditional revenue stream that our Club has sharpened its focus on. CIB seeks to capitalise on the Carlton business network, widely regarded as the biggest in Australian sport. Growing from less than 100 members when the strategic plan was launched, we hit 125 members in 2019 and are on track for 140 members in 2020. The most recent CIB function in the week of the AFL Grand Final attracted 1,400 guests. The Club now has four full-time staff dedicated to working across CIB.

5. Australia’s sporting employer of choice
To deliver on our key objectives, we need to attract and retain the very best staff. We want staff who believe that a united football club, relentless in the pursuit of excellence who hold themselves and each other accountable, can achieve anything – that is The Carlton Way. In 2019, we adopted industry best practice software to enhance our ability to uncover crucial relationships between performance and engagement within our staff team. A full staff survey in December recorded an engagement score of 83 per cent, well above the AFL industry benchmark.

6. Average home game attendance of 50,000
Carlton recorded the highest average home crowd growth of any club in the competition in 2019, growing from 31,775 to 46,730.

7. Zero historical debt
The Club has eliminated $3.4 million of historical debt in the last six months. The Club is now on track to completely eliminate the remaining $3 million of historical debt over the next 18 months – well ahead of our initial forecast when the plan was launched. This will see the Carlton Football Club debt free for the first time since 1996.

8. Masterplan complete
In 2019, we appointed a Project Director who has now been working on this project for 12 months. Our Board provided members with a first glimpse of the designs at our recent AGM and we look forward to sharing final proposed designs with members in the near future. A total of $35 million in state and federal government funding has been sourced for the project and $5 million has already been secured through our fundraising plans. We also look forward to sharing these fundraising plans with members in the near future.

9. Carlton Respects to become the most influential gender equality program in sport
We are in the process of converting parts of our Carlton Respects Schools program into a digital format that will allow the reach of Carlton Respects to grow significantly. We are also working through a range of partnership options to amplify the work we do in the area of gender equality. Our Masterplan will also see the first fully integrated high-performance facility in the AFL, whereby facilities for our AFLW players will be identical to those of our AFL players.

10. Revenue of $75 million
A critical metric as increased revenue has direct links to on-field performance through investment, eliminating our historical debt and completing our Masterplan. Removing all government and philanthropic contributions, club revenues grew by more than $5 million in 2019. We expect a further growth of $5 million in 2020, which will take our annual revenues past the $70 million mark by the end of 2020, having increased by more than $10 million in just two years. This growth in revenue has allowed us to increase our investment into our football programs by $4.5 million annually. It should also be noted that this revenue growth has been entirely self-generated through growth of consumer, commercial and non-traditional revenue streams such as Carlton IN Business and the Carlton College of Sport.

In closing, I want to once more take the opportunity to thank our members, your unwavering support and loyalty has been instrumental in the growth of our club.

On behalf of our members I also want to wish Katie Loynes, Kerryn Harrington and all of our AFLW players, coaches and staff, the very best of luck for the remainder of the AFLW season. It’s a huge game this weekend against the Saints at Ikon Park for our annual AFLW Carlton Respects game which aims to raise awareness about the prevention of violence against women.

Good luck also to Patrick Cripps, Sam Docherty and all of our AFL players, coaches and staff in the lead up to Round 1, in what will no doubt be a great game in front of a massive crowd at the MCG. We wish all our players the best for the entire AFL season and look forward to an exciting year ahead.

I know these things are supposed to be rosy, but that still reads as impressive progress on a long list of very important off-field items.

If he can stick to the business-y stuff then he's absolutely fire.

Would prefer if he kept his nose out of list management. I can accept SOS was an island but when that island is a continent... Eh, it is what it is. Now that he has put together his team we shouldn't hear too much more of him meddling in it as he should be empowering his people and giving them the responsibilities that he signed them on for.

But business is his bread and butter and he's consistently proving that the club is in its best hands that it has been in in decades.

Dear Aph,

We wanted to take this opportunity to provide an update on the Club’s response to the current COVID-19 situation.

We know this is truly an unprecedented scenario and every single one of us will be impacted. Our hope is that all our members are looking after yourselves and your families and providing the necessary support to your own communities, workplaces and schools.

Current situation
The AFL this evening announced that the 2020 AFL Premiership Season will be reduced to 17 rounds; with every team set to play each other once.

The state league competitions across the country – VFL, SANFL, NEAFL, WAFL, TSL, men’s and women’s, and all National and State Talent Programs will delay the start of their seasons until 31 May.

Whilst the AFL has not declared a final decision on Round 1 of the AFL season, it is pleasing to hear that players have tonight voted in favor of playing Round 1 and our members can rest assured that our players are very well prepared and excited for this week’s game.

Whether this weekend goes ahead as Round 7 of the AFLW season or whether the match becomes part of a finals series is still unknown. However, following an impressive win in Alice Springs on the weekend, our AFLW team fully intend on playing and continuing the form that sees us sitting second on the ladder in conference B with five wins and one loss for the season.

The Club is understanding of the government’s decision to restrict large crowd access and while disappointing, we must remember that the health and safety of the entire community, including our loyal members, players and staff remains the Club’s number one priority.

How we are keeping people safe
There are a number of proactive steps we are taking at club level to ensure the protection of our members and fans, while also ensuring we are undertaking every possible step to minimise the potential risk of COVID-19 through the football club.

A number of these steps relate to personal hygiene and improved sterilisation of areas that our staff and players unavoidably frequent. We have implemented a range of additional measures to reduce the likelihood of the virus spreading through the Club, which include:
  • All administration staff (non-football) are now working from home, where applicable.
  • The Club has been closed from a public access perspective, which means the café and retail store at Ikon Park are no longer accessible. For the time being, there will also be no access to AFL or AFLW training for our supporters.
  • Player appearances have been postponed until further notice.
  • All non-essential travel for staff and players has been cancelled.
  • All external meetings and visits will now be via the use of technology rather than visitors or guests attending the Club.
Membership enquiries can still be made over the phone or via email and our online retail store remains open.

We appreciate this is a unique situation and understand the impact it will have on our members. Equally, we acknowledge the responsibility we have on behalf of our members to keep our players and staff as safe and healthy as we possibly can.

Our members
We have mentioned on a number of occasions that our members are the lifeblood of our club. Never has this been more true or more critically important, than right now.

We’ve been incredibly humbled by the feedback we’ve received from our members and we could not be more appreciative of the unconditional support our members have provided us. We would also like to take this opportunity to particularly thank those fans who have contacted the Club and joined as members in the last few days.

We appreciate that some members will have queries regarding their 2020 memberships, corporate hospitality and upcoming events and we will continue to provide updates as further information comes to hand. As is always the case, members can contact the Club at any time to discuss their membership.

All those who purchased public tickets to our Round 1 match against Richmond are eligible for a refund and will be contacted directly by Ticketek. In relation to the Club’s remaining games, we will continue to communicate to our members as soon as information is provided to us by the AFL.

We also want to advise our members that the Club has confirmed to the AFL that Ikon Park is available to host any Carlton AFL or AFLW match that they want to schedule at the ground. During this lockout period, it goes without saying that Ikon Park should be considered for AFL games when capacity and supporter amenities are not a factor.

Business continuity
Members should be aware that business continuity plans have already been deployed and are being updated as more information comes to hand. Steps have also been taken to immediately reduce our cost base in preparation for the significant loss of revenues across the business.

We have an internal working group that is meeting daily, with regular Board update meetings providing management with the support required to best manage the current situation.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding during this time and absolutely intend to ensure our members remain connected to the Club during this period, whilst also ensuring that you remain informed on a regular basis as new information comes to hand.

On behalf of everyone at the Club, we encourage you all to take care of yourselves and each other during this challenging time and once again thank you for your outstanding support.

Dear Aph,

As the enormity of COVID-19 is now felt right across the world, our industry and our clubs have not been spared from the brutal economic impact that has resulted. Thankfully, the health impact to the football community has been very mild to this point and we continue to take all necessary precautions to keep our people safe. We urge all our members to continue to do likewise and look after the most vulnerable members of our community.

I wanted to take the opportunity to update you on the decisions that we have been forced to make as a result of the AFLW season being cancelled and the AFL season postponed. As of today, approximately 75 per cent of our workforce has been stood down and a number of other staff have been advised that we are no longer in a position to continue their employment. The most savage cuts have been in football where the AFL have asked clubs to reduce their soft cap expenditure by $1 million this year, with further significant reductions planned for 2021.

With the start of the VFL season also delayed, the financial impact of the COVID-19 situation has now flowed through to our second tier competition. In the last 48 hours, we have made the incredibly difficult decision that the alignment between Carlton and the Northern Blues was no longer financially viable in the current situation. With the Carlton Football Club no longer in a position whereby it could financially support the operations of the Northern Blues, Directors of the Northern Blues requested the support of the Carlton Football Club to assist in finalising the operations of the Northern Blues and determine the very best way to manage the individual situations of all Northern Blues staff, players and key stakeholders.

This decision is made even more difficult by virtue of the fact that the alignment between Carlton and the Northern Blues had never been stronger, and I offer my thanks to President Stephen Papal, Coach Josh Fraser, Captain Tom Wilson and all the players, coaches, staff, volunteers, Board members and loyal Northern Blues members and supporters. It is an unprecedented situation and it is incredibly sad that the Northern Blues Football Club will end as a result of the economic implications of COVID-19.

The future of the AFL’s second tier competition is very unclear at this stage. Our plan is to reassess the situation once the AFL make longer-term decisions on what a future second tier and underage elite competition look like. Members can rest assured that we will be well prepared to immediately respond once these decisions become clearer and we are currently working with Northern Blues players to ensure they have access to ongoing support and resources. Should the VFL season go ahead, Carlton will be offered the opportunity to enter a team of our own and we would obviously be leaning heavily on existing Northern Blues players to complement our listed players.

Our 156th year of existence is certainly proving to be a challenging one. Whilst we are yet to fully survey the full financial damage, there is no doubt it will be significant. The reality is that we have faced adversity on many occasions before, and not only survived – but flourished. Nothing will be different this time around.

To our members, your messages of support to our players, coaches and staff have been greatly appreciated. To be thinking of others when so many of you are experiencing the same challenges that we currently face is extremely humbling and reminds us once again of the enormous responsibility we have to you all.

We are currently working behind the scenes on what our membership products will look like for 2020 and for the short term future. We have heard loud and clear the suggestions that our members have been providing and it is our intention to provide you with as many options as possible. At this point, it is the clear objective of the AFL to run a 17-round season, but we also understand that some of our options need to be flexible enough to consider any further changes that the AFL might be forced to make.

While our AFL playing group is no longer at Ikon Park, they will remain committed and professional in maintaining their fitness standards. Our Director of High Performance Andrew Russell has provided every player with an individualised training program. This will ensure our players will remain ready for when the AFL decides it is safe for football to resume in 2020.

In closing, I wanted to take the opportunity to congratulate our entire AFLW team of players, coaches and staff. To be sitting in a preliminary final when the season was cancelled is gut-wrenching and on behalf of all of our members, I wanted to say congratulations on an outstanding season. Like the AFL competition, the current situation will also have an impact on the women’s game moving forward, however rest assured we will be providing our AFLW players, coaches and staff with all the support possible to ensure we are hungrier than ever to continue the rapid improvement of our women’s football program and put us in the best position for 2021.

Thanks again for all the great support, we are very lucky to have the members that we do.

Dear Aph, :tearsofjoy:

The past three weeks have been tough for all of us.

Players, coaches, staff, commercial partners and each of our 67,000 members – we have all been challenged in one way or another.

As difficult as these circumstances have been, the unity of our football club continues to shine through.

Over 500 new members have signed up since it became known the season would be suspended, more than 100 existing members have purchased additional packages, and literally thousands of you have reached out to us pledging your ongoing support.

We are overwhelmed by this support and equally grateful for the patience and understanding shown by all of our members as this situation continues to evolve.

Whilst it continues to be the AFL’s absolute priority to play all remaining 144 games and finals, it isn’t yet clear how the season is going to take shape. As soon as the AFL makes a decision around how the season will progress, we will be in touch with all of our members to discuss a range of options to best suit each of your individual situations.

At this point in time, we are relying on our members more than ever. We have always said that our club exists because of our members, and never has this been truer and more important than right now. Monthly membership payment plans will proceed on the 15th of each month, and we will be doing everything we can to add value to your membership and keep you connected with the Club.

I appreciate that we have each been impacted differently by this pandemic and some are feeling it more so than others. We will continue to work through your individual circumstances and queries and do all we can to support you through this challenging time.

Our Membership team remains here for you via phone and email, or you can request a call here. Before making contact, I encourage you to read through our FAQs by clicking here.

During times like these, our key people need to be more accessible than ever. We want to provide answers to your questions, and we want to share with you our thinking on how we plan to rebound as quickly as possible once this situation is behind us. I will be available exclusively to members between 12–2pm AEST tomorrow (Thursday 9 April) to answer any questions you may have or feedback you wish to provide. Click here to gain access to the online Q&A.

In closing, I wanted to remind you that this is a time to focus on priorities beyond sport. It is a time to focus on yourself and your family – to stay safe, stay home and take care of your wellbeing.

Thank you once again for standing by us.

Dear Aph,

We are writing to inform you that the Carlton Football Club will continue to support our co-major partner, Virgin Australia as it enters into voluntary administration, as a result of the current COVID-19 pandemic.

From an economic perspective it would be hard to think of an industry hit harder than the airlines. As a club, we will continue to offer our full support to CEO Paul Scurrah and his team at Virgin Australia.

Virgin Australia and their people have stood by our side for the past five years and through some very difficult periods for our football club. Their commitment to us has never wavered and they are an incredibly important partner of the Carlton Football Club and more broadly, the AFL industry.

Our partnership has been one of enormous mutual benefit. In 2019 alone, our Carlton IN Business network delivered more than $5 million worth of business to Virgin Australia. Like our club, Virgin Australia will likely look quite different post COVID-19, but whilst they continue to fly Australian skies, they will always have the unequivocal support of our club.

This is an incredibly difficult time for all Virgin Australia staff and their families, and the thoughts and best wishes of the entire Carlton family are with them.

We will continue to keep members updated on this situation.

As always, we thank you for your continued support of the Club.

Dear Aph,

I want to again take the opportunity to thank you for the great support and patience you have shown throughout the last six weeks. No individual and certainly no AFL club has escaped the effects of COVID-19 and we continue to be humbled by the mountain of emails, letters and calls we are receiving to offer support.

We also understand there are many members wanting clarity on what the remainder of the season looks like, as well as the Club’s plans in regards to membership. We are confident that we are moving closer to being able to provide this clarity, and are hopeful that the AFL will be in a position to next week advise clubs of recommencement dates for both training and games. We anticipate a material difference in the next phase of the season regarding match access to members, but the imminent return to action is an exciting prospect for all of us.

It will be no surprise to any of you that our players are jumping out of their skins to get back to the Club and start training together again. In particular, Harry McKay, Eddie Betts, Nic Newman, Zac Fisher and Caleb Marchbank – all of whom looked set to miss between four and six weeks after our Round 1 clash with Richmond but will be back to full training or very close to it by the time our players return to the Club.

Whilst we continue to be supportive of the AFL as they await direction from relevant government and medical experts, our entire football department is ready to hit the ground running as soon as the green light is given, which should make every Carlton member excited for what lies ahead.

Your ongoing and unwavering support in the form of maintaining monthly payments has not gone unnoticed, and we are so grateful to have you alongside us. We have now seen over 600 new members sign up since Round 1, more than 150 existing members purchase additional packages, and thousands more pledge their support. We remain more than 67,000 members strong – a record the entire Carlton family can be proud of.

If we don’t hear from you, the Club will proceed on the basis that you are content for your payment plan to continue as arranged and we thank you for your continued support. Should your circumstances change after Friday’s debit, our Membership team will be able to help you suspend future instalments and can discuss options around your previous payments.

Providing we receive the required information from the AFL next week in relation to the season's recommencement, we will be in a position to begin communicating a range of options on how you can manage your 2020 membership. To ensure we can respond to any queries in a timely and efficient manner, we have re-mobilised our Membership team and will be staggering membership-related communications as per the below time frames.

Hi Aph,

I am delighted to let you know that footy is on the way back.

From next Monday 18 May our AFL players will return to IKON Park and ramp up their preparations towards the resumption of the 2020 AFL season, which the AFL has today confirmed will restart on Thursday 11 June.

It will be fantastic to see our players back at our spiritual home on Monday and while it is disappointing we will not be able to host open training sessions for the foreseeable future, rest assured we will continue to provide you with constant and insightful training content via our website and social media channels to ensure you remain connected to your football club.

The permission the competition has been granted to return to training and playing has come with a number of necessary protocols all 18 clubs must adhere to.

First of all, next week will consist of non-contact training with full-contact sessions to resume twice a week from Monday 25 May.

Twenty-four hours before each contact training session, every player on our list will be tested for COVID-19. We will be able to receive the results of these tests prior to any contact training taking place in order to ensure the health and safety of our players, coaches, staff and especially the wider community.

All 18 AFL clubs will also appoint a COVID-19 compliance officer to ensure each and every protocol is adhered to.

While we know the competition will recommence on Thursday 11 June, the AFL is yet to confirm a revised fixture for the 2020 season. We expect to receive this in the very near future and, as always, will communicate this information to you as soon as possible.

We continue to work closely with the AFL and offer our expertise regarding the best approach to navigating the industry through the COVID-19 situation.

This period continues to have an enormous impact on the entire community and as you know, that includes our football club.

However, the fact that our existing members have stuck with us and hundreds of new members have joined whilst the season has been in suspension, puts us in a strong position to not only get through this period but accelerate out of it quickly.

That will only be possible though if we continue to stick together – players, coaches, staff, partners and especially you, our members. Members are the lifeblood of our football club and never have our members been more important than now.

With today’s announcement coming later than we anticipated from the AFL, communication around how you can manage your 2020 membership will be pushed back a week, with the revised timeline detailed in the table below.

As mentioned in last week’s note, this communication will be staggered over a three-week period to ensure our re-mobilised Membership team can respond to any queries in a timely and efficient manner.

Membership type
3 Game, Country, General Admission Home, General Admission Home and Away, MCCWeek commencing 25 May
Member Zone, InterstateWeek commencing 1 June
Members Reserve, Captains Club Reserved, Cheersquad, Legends LoungeWeek commencing 8 June

We look forward to providing you with a range of options and can’t thank you enough for your continued patience. In the meantime, should you need any assistance feel free to respond to this email or contact our dedicated Membership team on 1300 227 586.

Please stay safe, look out for one another and I will continue to be in touch with further information as it comes to hand.

Thank you for your incredible support.

Dear Aph,

With less than two weeks until the 2020 season recommences and our next four games now set in stone, preparations are ramping up at Ikon Park with our near fully-fit playing list raring to go.

It was not too long ago we were staring down the barrel of moving to interstate hubs and four or five day breaks between games, so to restart the season with four consecutive Saturday games in Victoria is something we're very much looking forward to. I know our players are jumping out of their skin to take on the Demons next weekend at Marvel Stadium.

While excited for footy's return, we are fully aware that it will not be a return to football as it should be. Our football club will not be whole again until each and every one of you are back in the stands supporting us and making that incredible noise that only the Carlton faithful can make.

Every message you have been sending on social media, every email and every phone call you have made offering your encouragement and support – it gets heard, it gets read, it gets listened to and most importantly it has lifted the spirits of every player, coach and staff member at your football club.

You have kept your football club alive during this period, that is something you should be incredibly proud of and we cannot thank you enough. We may not be playing in front of you during these next four games, but we will be playing for you.

Now that we have a clearer understanding of the restructured season, we are in a position to provide you with some options for your 2020 membership. We’ve been overwhelmed by the magnitude of members who have expressed a desire to leave their 2020 membership with the Club in recent weeks and we couldn’t be more grateful for that.

Please take the time to listen to Crippa and Loynsey’s message to you all, which can be viewed here.

In return for the support of our 2020 reserved seat members who wish to pledge their membership to the Club, we will be immortalising their names on an honour wall at Ikon Park as part of our facility redevelopment which will commence later this year. Priced at $500 for other members and supporters, this will be at no cost to reserved seat members who pledge their membership to the Club. Furthermore, we will be hosting them at a special member appreciation event once we are able to come together again.

Importantly, our reserved seat members will also receive an additional 11-game General Admission Home membership in 2021 that can be given to a loved one who wasn't a member in 2020.

The most important thing a supporter can do is join their football club as a member and we want to use this situation as an opportunity to introduce as many new members to Carlton as possible. We need to use every lever available to us to build the financial muscle of our club. No club in the AFL has the capacity to grow its membership like Carlton does and we need to make the most of this competitive advantage we have over so many other teams in the competition.

In addition, all members who pledge their 2020 membership to the Club will have their membership price for 2021 frozen. To pledge your 2020 membership and leave your fees with the Club, click here where you’ll be prompted to login using this email address and complete a short form.

Alternatively, members can click here to turn their 2020 membership fees into a tax-deductible donation through the Australian Sports Foundation, with Carlton Football Club covering the fees associated with this. Members can also request a call here to discuss a range of other alternatives including refunds, vouchers to spend at The Carlton Shop and credit options for future membership payments. If we don’t hear from you before Monday 31 August, your 2020 membership will remain with the Club, making you eligible for all pledge benefits listed above.

As always, our Membership team is here for you via phone and email, so please feel free to reach out should you need any assistance.

Whatever option you decide on, we wanted to once again thank you for your unwavering support. We are so lucky to have you as a member and we can’t wait to see you back at the footy.

Dear Aph,

The 2020 season continues to be unlike any other.

As the AFL announced today, we will be entering a hub on the Gold Coast and will take on the Western Bulldogs and Port Adelaide over the next two weeks.

The initial fixtures announced today will see us take on the Bulldogs next Sunday at Metricon Stadium before facing the Power on July 19 at the Gabba.

There is the possibility that we may also travel to another state once players and staff have completed this initial 14-day quarantine period in Queensland.

This is a situation we had been preparing for, particularly with the recent rise in positive COVID-19 cases in Victoria. We understand the important role all clubs play in ensuring we do all we can to keep the competition going in 2020, providing it is safe to do so.

Our priority has, and continues to be, the health and wellbeing of our people and the community. We acknowledge the significant undertaking by those involved in entering a hub and while it will be a new and different experience for us, it’s one where all those involved will be fully supported.

We know the playing group are ready to make the most of the challenge before them and to their credit they could not be more determined to make the most of it.

From day one since this was a possibility, our entire football club has embraced the concept and has viewed this as a real opportunity for us.

We have a tight-knit playing group, so the opportunity to get away together, make those connections even stronger and use these coming weeks to do everything possible to continue to improve our on-field performance is something our players are genuinely excited about.

Obviously we would love nothing more to be playing at home, in front of the Carlton faithful, however we understand this season ultimately requires us and the other 17 clubs to do whatever is necessary to safely continue the competition.

As always, thank you for your ongoing support of the Club and we can’t wait to see you back at the footy soon.

Dear Aph (real name withheld :tearsofjoy:)

I hope you and your families are safe and well as we continue to work through and overcome the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This season we may have been forced apart, however our football club continues to grow closer and it is the unwavering support of you – our members – that is keeping us all together.

Having played our first five games of the 2020 season in front of empty stadiums, it was fantastic to finally see navy blue back in the stands for our last two games. To see our members and supporters turn out in numbers no matter where we play proves just how big and passionate our supporter base is.

Our players and coaches are feeding off the energy and enthusiasm that is being provided by our members and it’s great to see this being reflected in our improved on-field performance.

The football club would also like to express our gratitude to our corporate partners who have continued to stand with us during incredibly difficult times. It is during the toughest times that the strongest partnerships are forged and I am sure I speak on behalf of all our 67,000 members when I say thank you to all of our partners.

Special thanks goes to our co-major partner Hyundai, with this Saturday against North Melbourne being our second Back our ‘Baggers game for the year, where we give our members the opportunity to have their name on the back of one of our player guernseys. It’s our way of saying thanks to each and every one of you for putting this club on your back and carrying us through 2020.

Following this Saturday’s game, our players and coaches will fly to Western Australia, where they will spend the next three weeks playing games against Hawthorn, West Coast and Fremantle. We take on the Hawks next Thursday at 5:40pm (AEST) before having a bye in Round 10.

We will then have back-to-back games against the Eagles (Sunday 9 August) and Dockers (Saturday 15 August) that will be shown live on both Channel Seven and Fox Footy. Knowing how much support we have in WA, it will be fantastic to see the Navy Blue faithful in full voice at Optus Stadium.

To shift our entire football operations to another state for a third time this year presents another significant challenge but being agile, flexible and open-minded is what this season requires and that is exactly the approach we are taking.

I wanted to take the opportunity to acknowledge our players, coaches and our entire team of football staff led by Brad Lloyd. In an environment that changes by the day, we have adapted to every situation that has been thrown at us and have done our members proud with strong performances both on and off the field.

Whilst we aren’t yet clear what the final six rounds of the season will hold for our club, we expect to be returning to Queensland to complete the season after our three games in Perth.

As a club we will continue to provide you with as much member-exclusive and online content as we can, so you remain connected to your club.

In closing, I just want to reinforce how grateful the Carlton Football Club is to have your support as a member. You are the reason we exist and our players can’t wait to see the stands full of Carlton members again.

Please stay safe during this time. We are particularly thinking of our Victorian-based members, and while these times may be uncertain, if you are needing to feel a connection, know that you belong to the Carlton faithful who values your support – all of us are in this together.

Take care and keep cheering on the Blues from wherever you are watching.
