Dear Aph,

It is with a great deal of gratitude and pride that I write to you this afternoon as President of our football club.

From a very young age, watching the reserves and seniors with my grandfather, father, and brothers on the city-side wing of our home at IKON Park, Carlton has always given me a strong sense of belonging – no doubt like it has for so many of you.

It is a privilege to receive this opportunity and not for a second will I take it for granted.
I very much look forward to playing my part, working collectively with our entire Carlton community as we strive to establish our Club as an industry leader on a stable and consistent basis.

The previous honour serving as co-Vice President of the Club, has afforded me diligent oversight of our United by Navy Blue strategic plan, a plan we are now halfway through and making great progress against.

As a Board, it is vitally important we maintain a stable environment.

We have quality people involved in this football club and it is such an environment that enables them to be at their best and continue the Club’s forward momentum towards achieving our vision.

Having overseen performance excellence throughout my career, I can see the united culture our club is building, which is critical to our overarching goal of consistently contending and ultimately winning AFL and AFLW premierships.

Our football club does not belong to any one individual, be it the Board, the players, coaches, coteries, or administrators – it is the collective, with everybody playing their part, that will make Carlton great on a sustainable basis.

We are united, inclusive and values-led, and I firmly believe the strength of our community, unified by a Stronger Together mindset and a common goal, is how we reach the level we aspire to.

For us to achieve that, we need a maturity and conviction to remain resolute and resilient.
Not just in 2025, but beyond.

We all know how competitive this industry is, it is one that offers no guarantees.
What we can control is our commitment to building a high-performance culture, a culture that is dedicated to excellence and where we are relentless in looking for ways to improve and get better, no matter how small.

As a member, I want to thank you for being at the core of igniting a sense of passion, pride and belonging for our entire Carlton family.

I hope to meet as many of you as possible at IKON Park tomorrow during Open Training.
I will be there from just before 9am, so please don’t hesitate to come up and say hello.

It is set to be a fantastic, whole-of-club day, and the perfect way to launch into an exciting 2025.
All the best to you and your loved ones, Aph.

Go Blues,

The JP Morgan stuff does worry me. Getting immunity to testify against other anti-competition banking cartels is a concern. The fact that the club doesn't care about these things is a worry.

How did he get appointed? Member voting or just the other Directors voted?

I hate the idea that our Presidency is just ticking a status box on someone's LinkedIn page.

Wouldn't be a real Carlton president without several major scandals brewing in the background.

Given I am a digital and long distance member, the club stripped me of voting rights years ago. So the following question is genuine: when did members last get to vote in a board election?

I'm interstate. I have no idea anymore.

The members voted Luke Sayers to remain as president till the end of 2025 at the 2024 AGM. Pretty sure that was the last election.
Fair call with how I phrased it BigFrizz. If I had have put things better, what I was meaning is that I am unsure the last time a member was elected rather than appointed to the Board.

I am hoping someone can provide the answer, ODN. Because I am thinking it is a long, long time since members actually had a vote on any Board representative.
Not sure how long the board members are voted on for. In 2020 there were five candidates for the election of three board members and Judd, Townshend and Campbell were successful.

There is a sub board of some sort that vets candidates to determine suitability. The latest person added to the board was Helen Kurnicic who was deemed suitable and replaced Craig Matheson (fortunately) in 2024 . Board stability is a good thing though. Anyone can apply to go on the board if they pass the criteria. However we don't just want anyone on there.
