These don’t sound like significant achievements to me....although I agree keeping Mathieson quiete is a good thing.

Something doesn’t seem right with MLG.....and he hasn’t really done anything for me to think wow this guy is pretty good...I think Carlton needs someone very good at this role and all roles for that matter...I’m really happy with bolton and although I think sos will continue to do well I dont like the fact that he is closely linked to MLG.

Greatly improved finances, PP becoming the home of AFLW, being granted an inaugural licence and the 20 million dollar grant. Off field we going ok with room for improvement especially with membership. On field clearly plenty to improve but that will come.

MLG is not a polished public speaker so therefore some assume he is no good. I would rather a person of substance rather than a well spoken dud.

Is that before or after the players are motivated and playing with confidence because none of that has been happening this year.

What makes you so sure the players will be motivated and confident next year? Any evidence?
If the players wenrt motivated this year our losses would have blown out even more. There have been lapses and in those lapses they have looked poor. In the main ive been happy with there effort and motivation. I just hope that in the remaining games we dont suffer any more in game injuries - it has affected so badly this year.

What makes so confident - the general football life cycle. Just like great sides falter on the flip s**t sides improve and play better. Its the same regardless of standard or competition.

Yep. The biggest positive of the MLG era for me has been the intent to change the need of an organisation addicted to hitting the fast forward button. Not an easy thing to do, and we're battling at the moment because of it. Only time tells now if it's worth it.

Got a feeling in me 4b2.

All this external noise, club coming out on the front foot sick of it, seems we re not taking it lying down anymore.

This is the turning point in our club.

You make good points...just doesn’t come across good when your president ums and ahs like he did on radio with DerWayne Russell and co....imo president has to be a seasoned communicator and quick thinker.....thought they unravelled him a bit....

No doubt it would make him appear a stronger/more qualified prez especially in our current environment of style/over substance. Whilst he fumbled a little he never conceded anything and straight batted the curly questions.

He may not be the man for the job, but what he has done, is laid out a plan from the start with Bolton, SOS and Mckay and the board and they have stayed on that path. There are no mixed messages, they are sticking fat which is not what we are used to from our club. This is going to take time and they have all said that.
Things will not always go according to plan, injuries etc, but they are sticking to the plan. Outsiders and the media may not like it and are kicking up dirt, they want a story, they want the old Carlton, they want a sacking or a white knight.
I am more than happy bide my time and wait, once they start changing the message with out good reason then I will start to worry.
I think some of our supporters (& some of the footy media) are pining for the days when certain members of our board leaked information to the media on a regular basis, making it easy for the media to create enough noise to lead to a sacking or just prolong the unrest at the club.

Thankfully those days are gone so some of our supporters are now prone to making stuff up e.g. Kate Jenkins resigned because Simon Lethlean was not appointed CEO of our club, despite the appointment of Liddle being made in Nov 2017 & Jenkins resigning now. As it would seem are some of the media who want people to believe that SOS is running our club e.g. Caro & Leigh Matthews.

As I posted last night, agitators will agitate, but fortunately the club is solid in sticking to the process which was commenced in 2015.

Seasoned communicator does not = smart/intelligent. Some of the smartest people of our time are poor communicators.

FWIW, how many club presidents regularly communicate with the media? Frank Costa always left it to Neil Balme or Brian Cook. The current Richmond president only speaks on ceremonial occasions, leaving the media stuff to Benny Gale. Do you know the name of the Sydney Swans Chairman? I had no idea until I saw an article today reporting that he had spent $25m on a property in Mosman in Sydney.

A few days ago some people were insisting that MLG should be fronting the media. He has done this on a number of occasions in the last 24 hours or so & what happens? People start critiquing his communication skills rather than the message he has delivered. One can't help but be cynical about this type of behaviour.

Absolutely agree.

In relation to Mathieson, quicker we hand back the pokies dollars the better. It's a blight.

I note that it's no coincidence that he has quitened given he did back in MLG as his preferred candidate

New letter from the president this arvo.

--------------------

Dear drunkill,

United and relentless in our pursuit for success, our football club is building towards something special and we have you to thank.

I would like to thank you for showing your faith and belief in our club and playing such a significant role in putting us on the path to achieve success. Our new membership record of 64,269, in addition to a 47 per cent increase in home attendance – the biggest growth in the AFL this season – is a testament to your commitment to Carlton and we look forward to seeing that support continue for our AFL and AFLW teams in 2020.

On-field, under strong leadership from our coaches and captains, the momentum is building and there is real excitement for our future. Off-field, we continue to go from strength to strength and I would like to take the opportunity to provide you with an update.

After initially budgeting to reduce our current debt by $1 million this financial year, I am pleased to inform you – on behalf of the Board – that we will double the debt reduction to $2 million. We were able to achieve this on the back of a strong business model that now sees us well on the way to eliminating the remaining $4 million of historical debt.

This good news coincides with the Master Plan of Ikon Park now entering its final planning phase. Our club is working closely with a planning committee consisting of representatives from the Federal and State governments as well as the local council and we aim to be in a position to share these plans with you by the end of the year.

Once completed, the Master Plan will see the Carlton Football Club boast state-of-the-art facilities that will be the envy of the competition. The development will also incorporate an education hub and elite training facilities that will enable us to integrate our AFL, AFLW, VFL and VFLW programs.

The philosophy is simple: all teams as one club, working together to win Premierships for our members.

Collectively we are committed to diversifying our revenue streams, which will underpin the financial stability of the Club.

The Carlton College of Sport has had an outstanding inaugural year. In partnership with La Trobe University, the Carlton College of Sport has had over 50 students enrolled in its first year and we expect this number to grow significantly in 2020.

Carlton IN Business (CIB) is also continuing to grow at a rapid rate with more than 130 businesses connected to the Carlton Football Club. CIB is the largest corporate network in Australian sport and we expect the number to increase once again next year. It provides a pipeline of potential member benefits, sponsors and mentoring opportunities for all of our players, both men and women.

As a club, we want to be involved in authentic community programs that make a difference. We are proud to do this through our Carlton Respects program, which continues its great work in raising awareness of gender equality for the prevention of violence against women through community education programs across Victoria. Having reached over 4,000 students this year, we remain committed to growing Carlton Respects into the most influential gender equality program in Australian sport.

As you may have seen this morning, a bronze statue of Tayla Harris was unveiled in Federation Square. This is a proud moment for Tayla and our entire football club, recognising her as a person, as an athlete and what the power of women’s football represents. We are delighted to have a player and a person of Tayla’s character representing the Carlton Football Club and acknowledged in such a powerful way.

I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate our CEO Cain Liddle on being awarded the 2019 AFL Graeme Samuel Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a senior manager within the football industry who is working in the areas of business or administration. It is a fantastic acknowledgement of his leadership and achievements during his time in football and at the Carlton Football Club.

With the football club continuing to hit its key targets off the field, it lays a strong foundation for us to achieve success on-field.

Next year our target is to reach 75,000 members, with a view to ultimately reaching 100,000 members by 2023. During this time we are committed to winning AFL and AFLW Premierships for our members and that will always remain at the forefront of every decision we make.

There is certainly a special feeling around the Club at the moment. Together we have a clear direction of where we are heading, which is why stability and unity across the entire football club will be the driving force heading into next year.

I would like to reiterate my sincere thanks for the incredible support you have shown in 2019. Our members are the lifeblood of our club and always will be.

See you at the footy in 2020!

Go Blues.

We have certainly sorted out our issues off-field. No longer looking for a cheque from a benefactor to balance the books each year. This will only improve the club on the field in the coming years.

Exciting stuff.

might have mentioned me but otherwise fair..............

Very pleased with off-field steps we've taken this year.

So far Mlo gets the tick from me.
He doesn't need to be a big media personality if we continue to make strides.

We were starting from a fair way back off the field and the gap seems to be closing at a rapid rate.

great news, sb - club considering a special area for problem gamblers whereby their children can be discreetly taken into care by a secret door leading to dhhs, payday loans can be applied for onsite, people can leave food and clothing and the nescafe coffee is bottomless cup - it just makes you proud don't it?

Thy, it sounds like you were old enough to remember the casino weekends in Adelaide by Victorians?
I hated us throwing our money interstate, not only gambling, but tourism, etc. I know I would rather keep the money in Victoria, as humans will gamble, no matter where or how!
Can't see why we can't cash in and more importantly make our club more secure.

For all the criticism that the guy cops from some people here I think that MLG has been a good president overseeing a period of great change at the club and handled it well.

The measure of success in this position for mine is always whether the person leaves an organisation in a better place than it was in when they assume the position. IMO the answer to that question is a resounding yes.

5 years is about the right amount of time for a person holding such a position before handing the job to someone else.
