Thought this was an interesting comment from Jon Hay the other day...

"You don't get the chance to run off because you are always worried what will happen if the ball gets turned over."

I would have thought he had plenty of chances, took every one of them and consistently turned it over...didn't seem to be too worried to me!

The position is obviously going to be a hard one to fill but I'm not too concerned about his departure. Any thoughts on who we should develop as the next long term full-back? Who in the short term?

Its a good question to raise. Once again , I think AC will chop and change this year , trying to see who looks most stable this year at that position. I feel sure that he will move Roughhead up the ground this year , and I know it may sound peculiar , I wouldnt be suprised to see Buddy playing at that position for 4-5 weeks. In the long term I think we'll have to look at players like Zac Dawson at that role. Come to think of it now , we are definitely going to be vulnerable without a full-back

Danny Jacobs has taken some handy scalps in that position in recent times ,Roughy has shown he is capable also of manning up on main forward targets & doing well if needed ,failing that Boyle ,Thurgood ,Dawson in that order would be the ones i would think could be moulded into that position. But that's just my opinion FWIW.

Horses/courses for the short term.

Smith has handled the possie at times (Tarrant, Kingsley, Welsh) the more mobile leading types. Croad might get the 'go to' forward rather than a true 'ff'. The Tredrea, Hall, J.Brown type. Then who knows. Roughie showed a bit late but wouldn't want him on a 'burst' type of player on the lead. Wrestling/body strength, give the kid a little while and he'll hold his own in that style against most.

Like Gary said, the amount of footy Hay has missed over the last few seasons, we've had to rotate others through the role anyway so another year shouldn't really be a bother. Maybe we can find out if Dawson, Boyle or someone else is suited to really claim the spot, maybe not.

But it's not going to be an area that for the majority of time we shouldn't be able to find someone capapble of taking the role just the same.

It'll be more getting our back 6 right. We have enough options to cover players, depending on who we are playing. St Kilda might stretch us a bit, but I think we'll be able to cover most sides.

Tim Boyle is the one being mentioned alot, but he's only played a handful of games, it'd be a big ask, but has potential.
