Essendon were able to select the best youngster available in Matthew Lloyd due to Fremantle selecting Todd Ridley of Essendon who was uncontracted.
West Coast were able to select the best youngster available in David Wirrupunda due to Fremantle selecting Tony Godden of West Coast who was uncontracted.
As part of Fremantles agreement into the AFL in the early years they had to pick a certain amount (not sure on the numbers) of players who were uncontracted. The team that was being poached could then select the best available youngster.
How nice it would have been if Port could've been compensated for Nick Stevens but thats another story.
