Analysis Full season BS Stats from 2019.

And no BS does not stand for BrianSpeaking.

Here's some of the weird things stats tell us about the season past.

AFL player ratings.
StKilda has no players in the top 25. Melbourne have 2. ( Gawn and Oliver). Fremantle have 3. Sydney have 2. Carlton have 1.
Stkilda's highest rated player is (now ) Patrick Ryder 26th. Then we have Ross and Gresham at 49 and 50.
Interestingly 94,95, 96 are Betts, Steven , Gaff.
Nathan jones is rated the same as Jack Sinclair. ( 104 and 105). Zac Jones is rated 189th. Hill is rated 227th.
Dougal Howard rated the same as Blake Acres. (210th )

If we let champion data pick the team it would look like....

B: Webster.14 Brown 18 Geary 17
HB: Jones 8. Carlisle 16 Savage 6
C: Clark 19 Ross 3 Billings 7
HF: Membrey 9 Howard 11 Newnes 13
F: Butler 20, Marshall 10 , Lonie 21

R: Ryder 1. Steele 2. Gresham 4.

B:Sinclair 5 , Hill 12 , McKenzie 15 Long 22

Emerge: Battle , Kent , Wilkie, Hannebery

Free Kicks:
Prepare for a bad year, all the players the umpires like are gone.

Jack Steven got 2.4 per game. 4th in the AFL.
White , Longer and Rowe , 2 per game , 12th in the AFL.

Marshall 27th had 1.8 per game. Then Robbie young at 1.7 oops he's gone again.
Lonie gets 1.6 but we know its a matter of time until he's done for staging.
Geary got NO free kicks in 2019. They took his bloody leg off and they couldn't even give him a free. If it was a Barry Hall roundhouse, they'd have given Barry a free because Geary head butted him in the fist. What's more Geary would have come out fine and Barry would never have used that fist again.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Now we know that Hurling is a pretty rough physical sort of a sport , and maybe that's why our Irish Rookie is fifth in the AFL for free kicks away. 2.7 per game.
Not great when you're in front of the opposition goals though Darragh. With Mumford retired, Darragh needs to work on getting a few games so he can lead the contest.

Big Rowan on 1.9 per game isn't letting himself get pushed around either.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Goody little two shoes Savage and Membrey
Only gave away 7 free's in 22 games. That's less than Joyce in 3 games. ( 6 of Joyce's free's were against Gold Coast, with only 1 in each of his other games. ).

More interested in hit out stats. Super important

I was going to do a vitally important stat next....bounces.
But at special request Hitouts. You owe me some dimsims Plugger.

Marshall 13 in the AFL for hitouts per game. In between NicNat and McEvoy.
Pierce 1 game made his average 19th in the AFL. Longer was 27th so we can finally put that argument to rest.
Ryder 29th but he does better work around the ground than Longer and Pierce.
Rowe was 47th in the AFL.
Jake Carlisle had 1.8 hitouts per game , which made him 76th in the AFL. Comfortably ahead of Josh Bruce's 1.5.
Blake Acres the 97th best ruck in the AFL, we'll struggle without his hitout every other game.

A bit more serious,
Marshall averaged 7.5 hitouts to advantage. 18th in the AFL.
Ryder averaged 7.4. 21st in the AFL.
Both behind Pierce's 8.

Marshall won 41% of his ruck contests, Ryder 57%

Dunstan clearly our best ruck, having both ruck contests he attended. to advantage 100%. Only Jack McCrae stops him leading the contest.
Ryder had 32.8% to advantage.
Roma had 26% to advantage.
Acres managed 22% to advantage.

Where do you get these stats. Amazing stuff. South Melbourne dimmies?

So which Saints would be the most comfortable standing in front of the nightclub, telling you they are full inside, but then letting in the hot chicks who just walked up?
Yes we're talking about Bouncers.

To be honest , Essendon's Connor McKenna is in a league of his own, averaging 3.6 bounces a game, while no-one else is above 2.3
StKilda's best is Nick Hind, who is equal 9th in the AFL at 1.4 bounces per game.
Jade and Seb are our next ones, averaging a bounce a game. Equal 16th in the AFL with a heap of others.

We had around 13 players who played this year and didn't even bother to bounce the ball. Lazy buggers.

Seb had 23 bounces by rd8, with at least 1 per game and a high of 5 in rd one, then didnt have a single one for the rest of the season.

Obviously his role changed at that point of the season but its a drastic change to led leading the comp in that statistic to then not have one again.

Pfft it's all about the bounces punter - get with the program...

Bounces means that the player is in space , has time to make a careful disposal decision. They are a sign of a player who finds space.
Either that or they are a sign that you are Raph Clarke and you're about to take a nosedive from the biggest tackle you never saw coming.

Last year the average kick to handball ratio was 1.32
This year the average kick to handball ratio was 1.45
That meant on average, teams were kicking 10% more than last year
I started analyzing the "kick to uncontested mark" ratio but it was taking too long and I had to get back to watching a white noise video on YouTube

1% ers
The coaches love them, its when the player goes that one bit further to get their finger on the ball, to smother, to spoil.

Harris Andrews is the leader of the competition, averaging 10.7 per game.
But Nathan Brown is still a legend, second place with 9.7
Dougal Howard 13th with 7.3 , but when he played pure defense in 2018 it was 11.5
Darragh Joyce did OK with his three games , 7 1%'s making his average equal 19th in the AFL.
Carlisle with 6.6 has him sharing 30th with Bliclavs, McGOvern and Hooker.
After that we don't have much. Paddy Ryder 91st with 4.2 per game.
Marsh 101th (how do you even say that ) , with 4 per game, Wilkie with 3.8

Hannebery our worst , only 1 in five games. Cmon Dan, throw yourself in front of their boots a bit more.

Oh and i heard Hayden Ballentine on the radio , saying that he learnt a lot of his techniques from having Steven Baker playing on him. Are they counted as 1%ers?
