Ramsay Brown Williams
Hibberd Reid Varcoe

I/C Marsh and Aish

Hibberd would be huge get.
In: backline leadership

Out: panic, fumbling, getting into the wrong space

We have talented defenders, but we lack a backline general to enforce structure and team plan. Hoping it will come with time and experience. We still don't have a lot of players down back with real hardened experience. You can't manufacture it, you can coach it, but it needs time. You can of course buy it in.
Who could we bring in that would give that?

I blame this thread for Ramsays injury

Why tempt fate we are Collingwood!

Talls - if we go with 3 talls then 2 of them must be mobile... So i would go Brown, Reid, Marsh. If Brown goes down, or we only play 2 talls, then Frost is ahead of Marsh. (though both behind Reid and Brown).

Mids - A necessity if only playing 2 talls. If going 3 talls then may be better off being replaced. Langdon the guy here but needs to pick it up. Goldsack really the only other midsized defender we have (though Marsh can play "smaller")... Shaz when healthy. Both Shaz and Langdon versatile enough that can play both alongside 2 bigs.

Smalls - Williams a necessity. Everyone else depends on form/fitness. Next 2 picked are Ramsay and Sinclair both in form at the moment, and combined balance offence and defence. Maynard probly next, and Toovey deserves a mention when in form (but IMO only as a swap for Sinclair to keep team balance)

Mids/Wings who rotate back. I would rather we keep our defensive lines from the guys listed above, with this group only rotating back when needed or when we are struggling to efficiently get it out of the backline. Includes Pendles, Varcoe, Oxley and maybe Aish. (potentially Maynard and Ramsay might be better suited to this role in future rather than fixed in defence).

So my preferred defensive line for this weekend:
Williams - Brown - Marsh
Sinclair - Reid - Ramsay
I/C - Langdon.

Sadly won't be having Ramma this weekend

There's a few different line ups depending on who we're playing, but I don't want us relying on Goldy's judgement in the air.
This surprises me. I actually think that Goldsack is actually a decent mark and above average spoiler. Certainly a lot better than what we have produced the past fortnight.

I was wondering who you guys thought were our best 6 defenders, and who just misses the cut.

My go is:

M.Williams - N.Brown - T.Langdon
J.Ramsay
- J.Frost - B.Reid

Bench/Emergency: B.Sinclair,J.Marsh,B.Maynard

Of course excluding Scharanberg.

Thoughts?
I think you mozzed Ramsay. :(

B: Ramsay Brown Williams
HB: Reid Frost Sinclair

Next: Langdon, Maynard, Oxley, Marsh, Toovey, Goldsack

Excluded: Pendlebury, Varcoe, Aish, etc

I thought Maynard showed more signs today; he was nowhere near our best and he didn't see Dangerfield on that occasion when he picked him out, but he looked more composed and took an important defensive mark going back with the flight when Geelong were really pressuring us. Trending in the right direction!

Once he tidies up a few areas he will be an absolute weapon. 19 years old and I guarantee you he's hurting a lot of guys in contests and tackles. Kids a monster. Must persist with him. He's an animal.

At one stage, I forget when, but he tackled 2 geelong guys and put them both down - gave away the free but wow. Imagine he gets another 2 pre seasons under his belt

We wrecks shit. When he's a grown man then look out.

There is nothing at ALL good about Maynard, a massive liability in our back line and only getting a game because our other 3 smalls, Sinclair, Ramsay & Williams are injured.

I did think he was thoroughly average today and it was real heart in mouth stuff every time he went near it, but he's only 19. We just need to get our development right and he'll be ok.

FWIW he is the glaringly obvious omission for Williams once he's ready.

But there's nothing at ALL good about him? ( if you go by legendwhatsit)?

Yeah that was silly, but if I'm naming our bottom 3 today he's in the mix.

I'm confident we have something with him the thing is he makes U12 type errors and is playing in the worst possible role to make those errors.
