Another one we miss out on. Jose only played 89 games.

Michael Romero — son of Jose Romero — could be another addition to Western Bulldogs’ litter of father-sons

FOOTBALL’S most buoyant current father-son factory may be about to produce another jewel for the Western Bulldogs.

In recent seasons the Dogs have benefited in a massive way from father-sons in Lachie Hunter (Mark), Tom Liberatore (Tony) and Mitch Wallis (Steve).

Now Michael Romero, the son of 1996 best-and-fairest winner Jose, is beating the same path via APS school St Kevin’s.

Romero, 17, has produced some very impressive APS form for his school’s opening three games this year.

School coach Paul O’Brien said he has been impressed with Romero’s development.

“He has clearly improved in the area of contested football, his tackling has been outstanding and he has always had good speed,” O’Brien said.

story-fni0cx12-d085ad9c483e8135e304fe1e3733efea

Romero was a national junior 100m hurdles champion, but gave athletics away to concentrate on following his father Jose into the AFL and has been involved in the Calders Cannon TAC Cup program.

During his athletic years he worked with Sarah Mulkearns, who also spent 12 years as strength and conditioning coach of the Calder Cannons.

“As a powerful, explosive athlete from what I saw two years ago, he would be quicker than most over the first two or three. So he certainly could have moved his way up the athletics world had he desired that,” Mulkearns said.

Romero spent two months with the Western Bulldogs last summer as part of the father-son academy, and is expected to play some VFL games with the club when his school football finished in late July.

Recruiting manager Simon Dalrymple has monitored his progress as part of the father-son academy.

“Michael is a terrific young fella who is very coachable,” Dalrymple said.

“He has come from a stronger athletics background so is a bit different to some of the others we have had. He has speed and also has a bit to work on him in his game.
Every time i enter this thread it's bad news.

Coudn't we give Jose 11 more games!

GWS ACADEMY member Kobe Mutch has steered NSW/ACT to a 47-point win over Queensland in dewy conditions at Blacktown International Sports Park on Sunday.

The 184cm midfielder, who is considered to be among the best midfield prospects in this year's draft pool, finished with a game-high 31 disposals and six inside 50s in his side's 18.6 (114) to 9.13 (67) win.

Mutch demonstrated his fierce attack on the ball through the middle, made good decisions and used the ball effectively on either foot.

The Bendigo Pioneer was the beneficiary of 200cm ruckman Max Lynch's tap work at the centre bounces and stoppages.

Midfielder Harry Perryman had 17 disposals and eight clearances, working in tandem with Mutch to generate plenty of scoring opportunities for NSW/ACT in the second half.

In attack, big marking forward Todd Marshall kicked four goals and impressed with his accuracy in front of goal and agility at ground level.

The 198cm goalkicker was complemented by bottom-age small forward Charlie Spargo with three majors, while defender Hamish MacDonald was resolute at the opposite end.

Queensland was well led by its captain Jack Bowes, who was poised when in possession through the middle with his 21 disposals and one goal.

Brad Scheer's contested ball-winning ability was on display with 18 touches, seven tackles and two goals, using his strength overhead in the midfield and up forward to great effect.

Jack Rolls moved from half-back into the midfield in the second half and showed off his pace with 16 touches, while fellow speedster Josh Williams opened up the game on the wing.

Tall defender Declan Watson was kept busy and was also named among his side's best-performed players.

After an even first half, NSW/ACT blew Queensland away as the conditions improved, registering an accurate 12.1 to 5.3 after half-time.

NSW/ACT 2.5 6.5 11.5 18.6 (114)
QUEENSLAND 2.3 4.10 7.11 9.13 (67)

NSW/ACT:

Excuse my ignorance on the draft/academies but how does a bloke play for Bendigo Pioneers and NSW? Do they draft blokes in from NSW, train them up then send them back to GWS?

Yup. Same goes with Hopper. Came to Victoria, played in the TAC for North Ballarat Rebels and because he was in their zone, he went to GWS. This is what the outrage is about, because he isn't even training/being developed in NSW or playing there.

Brett Anderson made some valid points:

Then Nifty Nev came in:

Cool, Thanks GR!

Maybe give GWS a team in the TAC Cup?

POTENTIAL father-son and academy prospects Nick Blakey and Bailey Scott have starred in the second round of the NAB AFL Under-16 Championships.

The pair are in the extremely rare position of not only both being eligible to join two clubs as father-son picks, but also a northern academy, having lived in their respective zones for the required five years or more.

Blakey, a smart left-footed midfielder who marks well above his head, gathered 23 disposals and seven inside-50 entries for NSW-ACT in its 23-point win over Queensland on Tuesday at Metricon Stadium.

He is the son of former Fitzroy and North Melbourne champion John Blakey, who played 135 games for Fitzroy before crossing to North, where he played 224 games including the 1996 and 1999 premierships.

As well as qualifying for both the Lions and Roos under father-son rules, Blakey can also join the Sydney Swans as an academy prospect given he has lived in the region while his father has been an assistant coach with the Swans.

Scott is eligible to join the Roos and Geelong as a father-son choice, where his father Robert Scott played between 1986-2000.

Nick Blakey and Bailey Scott...

Finally get the chance to Nab another couple of father sons and out chances of getting them diminish by 66%. Blakey can go to Sydney, Brisbane or us. While Scott can go to Geelong, Brisbane or us.

Also makes mention of Crock's son Joel who is eligible in 2018.

Isn't all kind of a non-issue anyway given the bidding system now in place? If these two are top 10 picks, both nominate North and other clubs bid with their first round picks we would likely need to trade out players for picks or pick upgrades to get them both.

No cheap F-S anymore.

It is a bit of a non issue, but It's a shame that both these kids can nominate other clubs particularly the academies over us.

Yeah the academies stuff is bullshit. Just like GWS getting access to gun youngsters who have spent 2 days with their academies.

Blakely has been playing juniors all throughout his life and would've have played regardless if he was in sydney or victoria. In any case he wasn't going to be "lost to rugby" like the academies spruik out.

Sadly, Crock took his kid to the QLD theme parks a couple years back so now he's zoned to Gold Coast.

Does Wayne Carey have any sons coming up (that he knows about)? Should get the King to breed with Lauren Jackson or Serena next time she's down for the AO.
