Future of Beams, Toovey, MaCaffer and McCarthy?

Re: Future of Beams,Toovey,MaCaffer and McCarthy?

Would you have brought Buckley in for Reid..? That seems slightly cruel, he would have been bent over a barrel by just about anyone on the Geelong side. Probably even Pods with a dislocated shoulder. Even if Reid had one leg, I'd take Ol' Peg Leg over Buckley.

Not to say that Bucks doesn't have a future as a depth player, but to bring him in for the GF would have been farcical at best.

No I wouldn't have brought in Buckley at all. My point was that not everything our match committee did leading up to that game should be taken as a gospel. Buckley's absence on the emergency list doesn't validate Pantaloon's opinion about him being a dead weight on our list.
Lets face it, Sinclair had as much chance of getting a game as Buckley despite being named as an emergency.

Beams may have tailed off this year but I am a real fan. I would be very dissapointed to lose him. I can't see a future now for McCarthy. McCaffer & Toovey can go for the right deal - preferably draft picks or better still in 1 or 2 dedals to get 1 early pick. Buckley has no place in a grand final 22 so he should go IMO. If we can manage to get something then great but if not delist. He'll play games if he stays and look ok at times but he is of the O'Bree/Fraser/Lockyer ilk.

If we lose Toovey we have to keep Buckley as cover for injuries etc.

I hate the idea of selling our role/depth players for picks. We 'cleaned out' the list last year and picked a whole bunch of kids, our window is open now, so why add more 18 year olds? Especially when you're talking the likes of Toovey, Wellingham, Macaffer, Beams etc.. these guys are proven premiership players! Keep them at all costs, but if not we need to find replacements for them now.

McCarthy, Buckley etc - not huge fans of them but still think they hold value as like the 25th-30th men on our list. Depth.

Agree except I don't think McCarthy will get a game with us anymore. Was always a Malthouse favourite and will be better if he moves onto another club. At least Buckley has shown a few things and if the club thinks he can improve then let's retain him.

Bucks will be a good player if shown the right direction.
McCarthy will be good at another team like Nth Melb.
Tooves is a required player but is replaceable and realistically we were bound to lose someone to salary cap issues and id rather tooves than thomas, pendles, dawes etc.

I guess I'm a bit naive to think that all players at Collingwood would choose loyalty, success and playing footy with mates over money.

Is Beams out of contract? Trading out required players just for the hell of it is just plain stupid. If he is not making ridiculous wage demands then we should do all we can to keep him - he is not even close to reaching his peak.

If we must we should look to trade blokes who struggled to get a game or those we have cover for .i.e. Buckley, McCarthy etc. Our depth is not the best and to lose the likes of Beams, MaCaffer, Goldsack, Toovey is crazy if it can be avoided.

I dont think the club wants to trade Beams for the hell of it.
Rumor is he wants out , so if thats the case you dont have a choice.

Agree! If we were gonna loose someone I would prefer it to be troves. Got caff, bucks and the sack all capable. However could see toovey doing some pretty awesome shut down rolls against us...

I think mcarthy should ask for a trade if he wants to play. Otherwise depth.
Caff we gotta keep. Absolute gun! Perfect 3rd tall option. He's like a better built better disposal better looking Andrew walker ;)
Beams I don't know why people even assume he's leaving? Pretty sure he was injured and I remember reading somewhere that bucks was training him in the forward line over the 09 season and he said if he could model his game around anyone's it was buckleys. He cane out that year with a much more penetrating kick. I think he'll stay
Goldsack I hope stays however A bit may depend on the tooves decision. Like mcarthy.
Hasn't secured a 22 position. May look else where for a better run

i say everyone is up for trade if we can get a greater return. i will be willing to trade Pendles if we can get NicNat, for example. i say as long as we retain the following ratio any player trades should be considered.

1) our current starting 22
2) 10 (or more) depth players (which can step in and not weaken our starting 22)
3) up to 10 youngers (future potentials)
4) the right balance of players in all positions and roles, of course

Barring McCarthy who can go for nothing if the price is right even if it is Beams then do it. But we shouldn't trade for the sake of trading. It would want to be something great for Beams though.

My opinions

Beams should be offered up....good player but high maintenence
Toovey is gone but the club did the right thing standing firm, Buckley Clarke and Goldsack can easily fill his place
Macaffer should be a keeper, we need his defensive pressure and strong body
McCarthy has no trade value. May as well keep for a year as we dont have a lot of depth.

S Buckley is just plain awful, accumulates then leaks, kick is a weapon but he's the dumbest footballer I've ever seen

I think I'll keep Tooves if at all possible

Ignore all Beams talk, he isn't going anywhere, the other 3, maybe, but not Beams, he is staying, and will be at Collingwood next year, no matter what.

I'd put money on Toovey staying too, doesn't come across as a money hungry type, and he knows if he stays loyal he will be rewarded long term by the club.

I'd love the Caff to stay, but the rumours going around aren't that positive about it, so we may lose him.

If we can get a ham sandwich for J-Mac, take it, he should be delisted anyway, as we need his spot on the list.
Doh! 24 hours is a very long time in footy! :(

Then Trade Him - Easily Covered

Selling Possums!!..... going cheap!!!..... every morning I look at the Herald site and I get to look at that sad-eyed possum who wants more money and will be leaving any minute...

but he never leaves...

Should I call it possum's groundhog day? I keep seeing the Herald headlines saying that he's walking..... but he never walks..

Why dont they turn the headline around to "Possum stays!" and then they can say that he lied when he walks...

Maybe we could "toss a possum" to see if he walks.....heads we keep him.....maybe we can sell off half of Goldy to pay for Possum. We can save the other half in the cold storage in case we need him later in the trading period...

I'll still back Alan Toovey over his manager any day.

Until I hear a direct quote from Tooves himself saying he is unhappy with his current deal, I'm just putting this down to another stupid, and money hungry manager trying to break a club in the so called best interests of his client.

From the response off Twitter from some of the players (mainly Goldy and his girlfriend) the figures being thrown around by his manager are pure bullshit really, and the fact that's come to light is embarrassing for the manager.

If I was Tooves, I'd sack my manger today, he is causing more trouble then he is worth, and I would approach a larger, more professional agency to handle my affairs.

Alan Toovey is still a Pies player at this very moment, and until he isn't I'll back him to come through this, even if that might be a little naive.

I actually wouldn't mind losing Toovey - I think his trade value right now is probably at its highest, and I just get sick of seeing him turn the ball over or kick to terrible terrible spots...

Very replaceable.

agree. i love him as a player, he gives his all and is rarely beaten. he is a very important cog in our side. but he can be much more easily replaced than most other cogs. goldsack could easily fill his role, and is certainly a better user of the footy. and on the off chance marty clarke gets back to anything like his 2007 form it will be a case of "alan who-vey?" in no time
