One of the knocks on Aish in his drafting was that he might struggle with contested football. He obviously worked on that deficiency in his first year but it's still not natural to him.

When you are down on confidence, unsettled and under pressure it is easy to retreat into your shell and the first things that go are the things that aren't innately part of your game. At the same time, even if he re-signed and committed to the club tomorrow it doesn't automatically come back because he is feeling a little more settled and a bit of the pressure is lifted. His form might be related to his future but it isn't the only aspect affecting it he is still a second year player adjusting to the demands of professional football without the gloss and enthusiasm that are involved in a freshman year.

Lukius, you really don't mind jumping to conclusions. If Aish was one of our better midfielders and was in his 5th/6th year, then perhaps I would think there might be a connection but I really doubt that internally the Aish contract situation is focused on anywhere near as much as you think it is.
"jumping to conclusions" - that the constant media barrage about Aish, and the massive national story about the fact we face losing him, broke involving the team we were about to play, in an era where we have had most of our top draft picks leave, on the morning our captain directly referenced it's impact, the night after another young gun referenced the rest of his team as 'me best mates' in an emotive fashion, during a time of crises at our club. Sorry for speculating on a forum that all might be connected, or that the events might have been used or interlinked?

FTR - I don't think the Aish situation is a thorn in the side or something that is talk about daily amougst players, I said I wouldn't have been surprised if it was used as motivation to spur us on againt's carlton this week, given it was a massive story in the media along with the Leppa Vs ZOB saga.

I'm not going to turn on Aish. I still think he will stay.

Having said that, this all appears to be a pretty serious distraction to him and he maybe is wishing he had signed a month ago.
Now his form has slipped, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if the indicators are:

- keep working,
- get back in the seniours
- cement your spot over the course of 4-6 games, and

- if you are able to do that and it is working for both parties we sign up then at 400K.

If you can't find form, and you can't get it together we can part ways.

Anything interesting from Aish's interview on our website?

I can't watch it at work
Didn't say anything about wanting to be a Lions player long term, just said he wants to get back in the senior team and get a kick. Was a great oppurtunity for him to say he does want to be Lions player long term but he never mentioned anything about it.

Didn't fill me with any confidence that he will be here next year.

Have to disagree on that. Regardless if Aish is in form or not, the club will want him to stay.

Yep same thoughts from me here. Was a great chance to say he wants to stay here long-term"

Im over aish and pickering send him packing. How many times has it been said contractsl talks delayed until end of season , end of pre season , start of the season they are both just taking the pi##. In my opinion we would be better using the money from aish going and having a crack at Charlie Dixon. As much as it would be painful for the rest of the season the best thing long term for us would be to get the spoon. Draft number 1 pick who is touted as key defender/forward. Get number 1 pick in pre season so we can tell pickering and other clubs to stuff off when they try ans low ball us on the compensation for aish. Let little james sit on it knowing we can get him back on a rookie contract for a year and make him play NEAFL or sit out a whole year of football. We then can get ben keys with round 2 pick and potentially a priority pick. Seriously how long does it take to make up your mind whether you want to stay or go and how would anyone believe pickering when he has already stated that he is getting offers from other clubs That bloke would sell his first born child if he thought he could make a buck from it

Still sounds like he wants to lift his value to me. Says he's leaving it all to his manager. Problem is, his manager says his client hasn't told him yet what he wants to do. Seems to me there are no "ongoing negotiations", just discussions, or more likely, the club keeps asking and Pickering keeps stalling.

Does anyone care to think that there may be no underlying message in that video and he is simply stating that he wants to be in Brisbane?? This is getting ridiculous how big of an issue this is becoming. Everyone really needs to get a grip on things and relax a little. He is completely within his right to gamble on whether his form will increase his value or not....

If he was pick 50 would we care? Think the conversation would go: "you know that Aish bloke played alright last year?" "That smug one who ran around like he thought he was better than everyone else?". "Yeah that's him-he won't sign a contract". "Who cares he can't even get a game". "They reckon he going to Adelaide apparently his uncle played there". "Oh right, hopefully get something for him". "We should get something, he is soft but skills aren't bad". "See how we go"

Much as I dislike Pickering, we can't keep "blaming" him for his clients' willingness or otherwise to make a decision. If Pickanose is stalling, it has to be under Aish's instructions.

Managers can't take courses of action contrary to their clients instructions or they get the sack.

What about this for speculation . . . . . .

Events of last week:

Pickering gets a call during the week from Adelaide saying they are looking like they might retain both Patrick and Rory and as a result may not have much more that 250 a season. Might be able to back end something but it's not looking good.

Pickering rings Port who advise nothing has changed and in fact they have even less interest now that he isn't a regular in the seniors.

Getting desperate now Pickering arranges a meeting with Carlton and James. Carlton admit they would love to sign him but are wary of bringing in a player who could possibly be viewed as soft. Despite the need for talent at their club they have had some misses in recent trades and are not prepared to commit until Aish shows signs of improvement and a harder edge this year. James and Pickering leave the meeting unsure of salary potential or even if Carlton want him.

A couple of days later the Lions beat Carlton and James rings Pickering upset that he just doesn't know what to do any more. He didn't even have a reserves game this weekend and his mates all had a fat old time in Melbourne. Pickering quickly arranges a meeting with the Lions to see where they are at.........

At the meeting Pickering and James ramble on about how hard the situation is and how James just wants to concentrate on football and that the offer of 400k is pretty close to the money. At this point the Lions interrupt the ramblings with..... "400k per season is off the table. Sorry but the deadline for that has passed. On current form we will be looking at much less than that. You can't pay a seconds player that kind of money!"

James and Pickering leave the meeting with advice to work hard and get back in the seniors.

Fantasy stuff I know, but maybe just maybe the last week has been a reality check and he will have to lift his game if he wants to get either the destination or contact of his choice.

Brisbane Heat,
IT'S KEZZAS CONSPIRACY TIME!

You see, the Lions don't get in the news much. So, Swann, Pickers and Aish devised a plan to keep us in the news: Aishs contract talks. Any press is good press, and by "stalling" Aish is keeping us in the news for as long as he can.

He'll sign the day before the trade period starts.

I kind of wish Leigh Mathews was there. No more pressure. Tell us when you are ready to sign and get your head back to playing football. It will help us and you. If you want to leave just tell us and we can work on the best exit strategy. But, we want you to stay so play better.
