The whole article is in the link below but I found this paragraph rather interesting.

Brisbane suspect Aish wants out and offered to release a statement saying the talks had been put on hold until the end of the year but he declined saying he wanted the two parties to continue negotiations.

Now this just takes the cake.

Won't make up my mind till end of year but let's just keep talking. Let's all waste each other's time.

This whole story is bizarre. I can't get a clear read either way.

The best I can figure is that he's undecided but tilting towards leaving. Surely there can't actually be anything left to negotiate that means the incremental discussion from here will make a difference. That being the case, it seems like Aish is either:
  • trying to avoid the reputation of someone whose heart was never in it
  • just trying to make sure we don't bail out on him and commit elsewhere in case he changes his mind.

Reading too much into all of this (as is my Wont)

- He is defintely leaning towards leaving I'd say 80% gone.
- He doesn't want us to announce' talks on hold until the end of the year', because everybody knows that is code for 'he's goneski', and then no-one would blame us for not playing him in the seniors. Not playing him in the seniors would hurt him more than us, we could likely still get a first round pcik for him but when it comes to contracts down south they will be saying 'we don't pay $400K for players that couldn't crack the seniors of a bottom four side James'.
- 'talks on hold until the end of the year' would also make the club a pretty horrible place to spend the next 6 months, surrounded by 'mates' who know he is turning his back on them.
- if he keeps up the prospect of hope, there is the prospect of seniors footy, and that improves his contract position and his relationship with his team mates

This is what I am leaning towards and its stuffing us up both on this negotiation and possible targets we may be discussing with. The whole thing is starting to reek of self importance, geez even Bradshaw wasn't this bad - he'll save it just for the off season.

Wow, didn't Pickering go off about Mark Robinson.....

Yeah...it's great...haven't liked (if that's the correct terminology, possibly hate) for some time.....always when the opportunity presents itself they'll happily take a snipe at one another.

Pickering is getting a reputation for getting his clients to go home and clubs are aware of it. Brisbane has had enough of the BS either they want to talk seriously or the club couldn't be stuffed.

Pickering is now fuming because he knows that the longer Aish spends in the reserves the lower his market value will be because he won't show his talent in the AFL. I reckon the whole BS is impacting on his football as he can't handle the distraction (some can some can't), hence his form drop off. I don't care how much talent you have if your heart isn't in it then run around in the reserves and then back your bags straight after the final game.

Saying talks are "on hold" sounds final and Adelaide could be confident they've done enough.
"Ongoing" means 'Team Aish' is not yet satisfied and they have to work harder to get him.

Radio interview that I saw on Footy Classified.

Pickering slamming his ex-employer

Saying he blames Fox Footy, and Robbo, who just walks around town thinking he knows stuff when he doesn't. blah blah blah... it was entertaining

  • ANDREW HAMILTON THE COURIER-MAIL
Spot on. He happily mixes his own opinion into 'news' articles so the reader can't tell what he has a source for, what he's inferred and what he's just made up. It wouldn't surprise me if Aish had declined to release a statement, but provided no reason, and Hamilton has put words into his mouth.

It also wouldn't surprise me if Hammo is just guessing. There's so little accountability for sports journalists.

I know it is easy to say "Hammo? What would he know" but he manages to weave fact and supposition together seamlessly that many people take the latter as fact.

This statement seems like complete guesswork: Brisbane suspect Aish wants out and offered to release a statement saying the talks had been put on hold until the end of the year but he declined saying he wanted the two parties to continue negotiations.

He doesn't offer any evidence that the above occurred but because he "top and tails" it with quotes, it makes it more believable.

Snap. It is a fairly consistent modus operandi, isn't it?

Agree with this, but I think I and some others took a similar vibe from the interview with Aish himself. In saying (something along the lines of) "with the contract, I'll just leave it with my manager and the club, they're going to keep talking" it seems a direct implication that at best they're still negotiating, but its hard to see what remains to be negotiated.

Also, that he had to be prodded to say that he was enjoying his time at the club meant the response didn't smack of sincerity.

Seems everyone is speculating about what is really going on and why all the cloak and dagger stuff, so I'll have a go too:

Wild and Unsubstantiated Speculation #128:

James loves the Lions and Brisbane but it under enormous pressure from family and friends to "come home", which is the last place he wants to go since he was ecstatic to get away in the first place. Now he needs a cover story of listening to all and any offers, in the hope that someone (not Adelaide or Port) trumps the Lions best offer.

This way he can tell the folks back home that he just can't come back because he's had the offer of a lifetime from a Melbourne club..

Easy. It's as clear as day

I'm a genius.

Lloyd chimed in with his advice on Classified last night on how we should go about keeping Aish happy. Suggested that we should just play him in the seniors regardless of output and let him get form that way. Then tried to compare that approach to Ollie Wines' situation at Port. What a deadset flog. Wines played every game in his first year, as Aish nearly did, but Wines extended his contract before the start of his second year. Amazing what 12 wins and playing finals will do for a 1st year player's outlook.

Great comparison Lloydy! Yet another sparkling insight from one of footy's great minds. :drunk:
