The most recent obvious example would suggest otherwise. Port gave up pick 14 for Polec, but not to us, to GWS, so they could keep a first round pick. We got shafted by comparison. Converted draft picks Nos. 29 and 45 to 22 and 34 and gained 48. Port then immediately proclaimed they had secured a very talented midfielder, which we already knew and subsequent events confirmed.
Port actually improved their offer over the course of the trade period, and set out to do so. We got pick 22 for Polec + a five pick downgrade on 29 (so-so) + a three pick downgrade on 45 (meh). Compared to what we got for Yeo and Dochery and Longer and the attitude of the clubs involved, I find it hard to really hold that trade period against Port.

Agree with your comments about WC and Carlton. But if we are talking about what's fair, I think any fair minded observer would say pick 14, which is what I recall we were after. Instead, as you say, we got pick 22 and two downgrades.

I actually disagree with this, Christiansen cost us pick 21. Pick 22 and some change for Polec is about right IMO - for an injury prone, said to be lazy, struggling to get a game (albeit promising) youngster.

Christiansen was an anomaly for reasons we needn't go into.

I understand that referencing anyone in the football media, the public eye or of any public stature is highly illegal and an offense punishable by death - especially Caro (who I actually don't mind, I think she has great sources and is usually pretty spot on, ducks under table and waits for beating) ... However...

She said that there was a rift between player and coach and a growing rift between club and family In relation to Aish. Wouldn't you just love to be a fly on the wall in some of these meetings?.

If that was in anyway true, again - she has the best 'saurces' in the industry so.. I wonder what would be key to these rifts would be.. If it was the contract offer, not playing him, development, pressure to sign, coaching technique..?
Moloney is and was a close friend of Aish's and he wouldn't have Leppa on his Xmas card list either you wouldn't think.

I'd be interested to know what it takes to be elevated to football royalty.

Clearly James is adelaide football royalty. That goes without saying.

And the brown and Voss children will likewise be Brisbane football royalty, but what about (for instance), the next Generation of the Dickfoss family (are there any?).

Three bothers, Multiple state league premierships as players and coach, multiple b and F's. Sixty oddgames with the Bears and Lions for Dan, including best first year player, State league team of the century etc. Surely the Dickfoss family would be Brisbane Football Royalty.

Whatever way you look at it; whether the trading was fair or not, we sliced that draft apart (even if Aish buggers off):

7. Aish Likely to be heading off, but we had to pick him and back ourselves in.
22. Gardiner (Polec trade). I know who I'd want fighting for a Lions' win :thumbsu:, but yes, Polec can become a star wingman.
25. McStay (Longer trade). McStay will become a very important player moving forward. Longer has had more than 7 kicks once at St.Kilda and has kicked only the 1 goal since moving there. Once the hit-out is contested, he's done.
28. Taylor (Yeo trade). 2014 Rising star, will only get better and can play multiple positions and kick goals.
33. Cutler (Docherty trade). Probably the most comparable position wise, Doc doing OK at Carlton, Cutler had 32p in his just his 8th game.
34. Robertson Future bull at gate centre square midfielder, but has some skills too.
62. Freeman Still an unknown quantity, but there are signs he could be a very handy forward (Academy pick).
75. Clarke Hidden gem from the bush who we upgraded from the rookie list. Still learning and gaining experience.

yeah that's what I mean - high draft pick with potential but rarely getting games and said to be 'lazy' in comparison with proven star with off field and injury woes.. about the same pick was exchanged.

I don't think we were shafted here, as I don't think we shafted Geelong.

Yeah and not only did we gain/ replace the required talent, I honestly never really liked the Cut of Sam Docs, Longers or Polecs jib - just seemed a bit stuck up and 'too cool for school' (polec to a lesser extent).

Dizzy, Squizzy, Cuts, mcstay just seem like 'Lads' ....... and I feel like the sense of 'team' has improved with these Guys, never felt the other lot invested in the club at all.

Yeo though.. :( Loved that dudes game and attitude - would happily have kept him in our side, would have been a real young emerging leader by now.

Why do you say that?
Nothing sinister and only supposition on my part given how his last year unfolded. When he was dropped about round 5 last year Leppa said it was for team balance and something along the lines of you can't play the same "one-dimensional types". He didn't get another game for the year even though we were struggling. I know he had an Achilles which ultimately forced his retirement but for a period of time he was playing reserves and not getting selected.

Yeo is having a great season with West Coast; but I feel Cutler has a higher ceiling than Yeo :thumbsu:

And his attitude wasn't that good or he'd still be a Lion

I still think he will more than likely stay, but doing a bit of stalking on social media, he does seem to like a fair bit of Ricky Pettard and Matty Thomas' stuff on instagram. Richhmond could also be into him, even though they both are not certainties to be on the list next year.

Splitting straws I know but it's actually spelled Dickfos.

Anyway, it's a great name and Danny was a crowd fave back in 96/97.

.....and now an anecdote:

In those days , I sat next to a couple of likely lads in the Southern Stand at the "old" Gabba. Likely, because one or both were always good for a witty response to any banter that was going on within hearing distance.

At some point in proceedings Danny Dickfos went to the bench and stayed there for an extended time.. Keep in mind that back then, players usually only went to the bench if they were hurt or had been "dragged" by the coach. DD was having a really excellent game, so the latter didn't seem likely.

Eventually, someone in the vicinity of a few rows down was heard to yell out: "HEY, WHERE THE HELL DID DICKFOS GET TO?!!!!"

To which the answer instantaneously came (at twice the volume):

"HE'S OFF HAVING HIS DICK FOSSED!!!!"

I suppose it's one of those you had to be there moments but it did crack up the whole section of spectators at the time.

Gut feeling with the Tiges too...especially after Picknose referred to them as a suitor after they were mentioned in the Herald Sun last month.

Only one problem; they weren't mentioned at all o_O

Potentially another slip of the tongue, much like when he said Buddy to Sydney when he meant to say Western Sydney

I don't see how Cutler has a higher ceiling than Yeo, maybe a higher ceiling than Doc, but not Yeo.
He can play shut down, attacking half back, wing and when he develops physically, he'll head into the centre. His footy smarts are kicking are much better too. I see a bit of Brendon Goddard with Cutler

Cutler had 32 possessions in just his 8th game (pretty good for anyone); Yeo hasn't had more than 25 once and he's well into his 4th season!

I don't actually think it's all that close either.

Yeo has been in WCE's best 5 players this season. He is turning into a star IMO.
